Been looking to buy an AR-15 upper for sometime, and I found someone selling this locally. It is a Colt 601/602/604 upper (owner doesn't know):













I will be trading my NDS-3/Romanian AKM for it. I will additionally get the A1 stock and pistol grip, with $140 in cash.

The upper does not have a BCG or charging handle.

The bayonet lug seems to have been cut off (probably during federal AW), and apparently some washer is missing for the flash hider.

It will be a face to face trade, so no shipping or tax. With the cash I can probably buy a BCG/charging handle.

I don't know much about retro/old Colt AR-15s and their value. Does it seem like a fair trade?



Looks like a nice upper to me, and I'm seeing DPMS stuff go for more money than this Colt. I will be throwing it on my A2 style lower (I know, not exactly a true retro build).

I barely know which end the bullets are supposed to come out of on ARs, but I don't think the slow twist barrel of the older models is much good with bullets much heavier than the 55 grain slugs they were designed for. That right there might be a deal killer.

I'll just be target shootings/plinking at 100 meters, and I am sure no matter what I get it will be more accurate than me.

I am positive it is 1/12 twist. I've heard that works better with .22LR conversions, which I plan on getting to.

I personally wouldn't do it, because I can't see trading a working gun for a portion of another. Well, I'd trade my RPK for an LRB M14 minus the stock, but that's the only trade of that type I'd make.

Looks a bit rough. The fact that the bayonets lug has been sawn off really gives it a hit. Funny isn't that; absolutely no civilian use but a modification really sinks the value. The lower looks to be of a different manufacture than the upper. BCG and charging handle no big deal to replace as long as the price is right. I would barter a bit more.

As for twist rate; not much of a concern. You don't plan on doing any competition or accuracy shooting. Bulk 55 grain is cheaper.

But do what you want. Get what you want and don't give much concern to what others say. You only have to please yourself.

As for 22 LR conversions. What are you looking at ? I have been looking myself. I am considering the new Smith and Wesson AR15/22LR. Complete AR15 in 22LR. I can get it for $450. Most good conversion kits are $350 or more. Then you have to deal with the odd magazines. The S&W mags are made for the rifle and very good.

They are incredibly light and perfect for training someone to move up to the actual AR15. For me it's the price of 22LR. You can shoot all day and not break the bank.

Remington AR-15 .22 for $349 (looks like your AR-10)
And a S&W M&P .22 in there as well.

I would much rather buy the whole rifle setup, as you will not have a mismatched part issue.
I am tempted. GM store is about 1.5 hours away south of me...

Flogger, I don't know how difficult it is to get an AR in Commiefornia, but I would kick that rifle to the curb and keep looking...

Getting it without the paper trail is always a plus though. No $ for background check, no tax, no trail. As I've said before, that is always a plus in my book.
