Springsteen in concert is something everyone should see. Even if you aren't a huge fan of his, you will end up being more of a fan after you see him. The energy he brings is amazing and I don't know how he does it every night.

Some of the imagery and word choices in Roads to Moscow really grab a hold of me. If you've ever been in combat, the lines "two broken Tigers on fire in the night, flicker their souls to the wind. We wait in the lines for the final approach to begin" you will understand how the vision of that can come so clearly to mind. There is just so much imagery in that song that reaches me. The part

Coming unexpectedly upon their outposts, growing like a promise
You'll never know, you'll never know
Which way to turn, which way to look, you'll never see us
As we're stealing through the blackness of the night,
You'll never know, you'll never hear us

has special meaning to me.

I have sat in front of the fireplace in the dark listening to that while looking into the flames. I have shared that song with other similarly minded friends.

To me - incredibly powerful.

Al Stewart did a couple great historical songs. "Old Admirals" and "The Last Day of June 1934."

One must understand that Springsteen was heavily influenced by Bob Dylan in his early days, and was probably trying to BE Bob Dylan.

Spot on, it's that whole "imagistic poetry thing" where the song isn't necessarily about anything but is just a stream of images. The song can mean anything you want it to mean.

I don't think "Blinded by the Light" falls into "worst lyrics evah" territory. You want bad lyrics, listen to Bryan Adams. wink

2 excellent songs, those. I'd have to rate "Past, Present, & Future" as his best album overall, mainly on the strength of the 3 named songs and "Nostradamus." To me, Al Stewart is the songwriter Dylan wishes he could be. He really has a way of putting you THERE with the lyrics & music he chooses.
