I've been installing some old games that won't run on XP anymore due to Nvidia drivers that just don't work with them anymore. One of them is Crimson Skies that has been broken for a while now and runs beautifully on Win 7. Another is USAF, which works perfectly. Also Starlancer. So far, that's all I've had time to test. I had given up on them in XP.

I'm running the 32bit version of Win 7 pro.

Ooh, this is interesting. Wouldn't happen to be able to test with Mechwarrior 2 would you? I don't have Win7 installed anymore.

Tell us how it turns out. Its one I might try again.

I remember having "controller" issues. I was not getting the precision I wanted -- even when it was new. So, I didn't finish it back then.

I'm thinking if it runs USAF and Crimson Skies so well, it's going to run a lot of older games.

Here is what I tried so far:

I was amazed how easy it was to run Longbow 2 in Windows7, I posted how I installed it over in the Longbow2 forum. No memory issues like XP. Mig Alley fails to install, there was an execution problem during the install with one of the programs. BoB2 runs fine. Falcon 4 Allied force started working after I turned of T&L in the video settings.

Pretty nice, but I wished Mig Alley would have worked.

You need to patch it and install the XP GUI patch too. You will need version 102 patch and the aforementioned patch. Just google for it and it's out there. I have them if you can't find them. But it still might not run on 64bit anyway. There is a couple of useful files on Mcfly's site.

No, I looked too. It's on Gulfknight's site, but he charges you to download anything. The files are available at the usual places though or PM me with your email and I'll send it to you.

I've been posting videos of games that will run in Win 7 in the video section. Crimson Skies runs beautifully. JSF, F-22 L3, F-16 MRF, Eurofighter Typhoon, Mechwarrior4, CFS2, CFS3, FSX, FS9, Starlancer, BOB2, Lockon, HAWX, FreeFalcon5, Mig Alley, Rogue Squadron, and Strike Fighters run great.

Can't get IAF to start at all. Crashes right off the bat. It's some kind of DX error and after looking for a fix, I can't find one.

Can't get USAF to work. It loads OK, but seems to have the same drop=down menu issues that have been around since XP. Crimson Skies runs, but the graphics are all glitchy, especially when using the primary display driver settings. On the plus side, all of my Rainbow Six games and Ghost Recon games are running great, along with Longbow 2 (after applying Flyboy's Vista/7 fix)

I'm running Home Premium 32 bit with a NVidia 7600GT graphics card.

Crimson Skies needs the Nvidia fix to work worth a crap anymore. I read on a forum where this guy was asking Nvidia why they would not fix their drivers to work with CS and they basically said there just was not enough demand. So some guy fixed it himself. I have the link for the fix on my site in the video section.

It's on my site. Right above the Crimson Skies videos. It was easier just to put it up there. Everything you need is in it.

Win 7 x64 seems to run Janes F/A-18 just fine -- certainly not worse than XP did. Haven't flown it more than a few minutes, however, so can't comment much on that yet.

Hell, I might break out Flight Anthology just to see what happens. I seriously doubt it but if you can run USAF then maybe it will work in some kind of compatibility mode?

Ripcord

EDIT: I did install FA OK in win95 compatibility mode, and I could run it and play it in that same compat mode. Look like crap, though, just couldn't bear to look at it. But it was flyable, and that in itself is really pretty amazing.

Yeah, there are some games that just look so bad, I can't stand it, even though they will run in 7. I have JSF running. It runs absolutely perfect. Everything works. It's just so bad looking though. Kind of fun going back in time and seeing how much games have improved. I would put up a video of JSF, but Fraps records nothing when JSF is running.

EAW runs beautifully.

Combat Flight Simulator 2 and a few little additions to it runs great.

FS2000 and FS2002 run perfect but they are really not up to snuff as far as graphics anymore.

I tried the first and second version of Extreme Air Racing and no matter what I tried, they would crash at start up.

Janes WW II Fighters runs well as can be expected for such an old game.

Il2-1946 runs beautifully as ever.

Wing Over Europe - Cold War Gone Hot, Wings Over Vietnam, Wings Over Israel and First Eagles all run perfectly.

Tried Combat Flight Simulator, the original. It runs and looks OK, just does not recognize my MS USB Sidewinder joystick so it's probably something to do with my mobo.

You might want to check the JF-15 forum. There's an ongoing issue with the menus not working since Vista. Makes it pretty unplayable, but if you click around randomly enough you can get in-game.

Someone found a neat little trick where if you Alt-tab(IIRC) enough the menus will just magically start working. Someone else confirmed it worked, but he had to do it several, several times to get it working each time.

Another guy found a different workaround by installing XP graphics drivers.

As long as I'm here, anyone got Fighter's Anthology to run successfully? Not interested in the gameplay so much as the disc 2 library. Failed in Win7 RC frown Maybe it will run on the full version

I'm going to check the F-15E game today, but I don't have Fighters Anthology.

That was me way back in 2007, on vista home premium 32bit.

Well, I'm dual booting with XP on the C drive and 7 on the D drive and no matter what I do, the blasted game installs on C which is really weird and it will actually launch running from the C drive. But I can't really do anything with it. So someone with 7 installed on the C drive is going to have to test it I guess. So it's a no go for Jane's F-15 on my setup anyway.

Hi all,

Janes FA-18
Will play on Win 7 64bit system but you will need the fixes.

Janes F-15
Will run but the menu is invisible. By moving the cursor around and clicking on the page you can get other menus to open up. I was able to fly one mission, but because the menu is invisible it is difficult to enjoy.

Janes Fighters Anthology
Will play, but the graphics are terrible, but after awhile they seem to straighten up. The graphics of the water, however remained a rainbow of colors. In the menu for quick flights I found the fonts unreadable to the point you do not know what you are selecting or how many. In other menus, if you place your cursor on the title box the fonts become clear and readable. There may be a fix for this game, but I have not checked.

Janes WWII Fighters
As others have said this also runs well.

Janes USAF-
Good news, I was able to get Jane's USAF to run on my system. I was running it patched to ver. 102, without compatibility mode. I was not able to set the preferences in the game because it would not open the new window. I had to press the ESC key to unlock the cursor and allow me to make another selection. I then chose the Fly button to see if it would allow me to get into the game, and it did. I played it on auto-pilot mode. Once it was flying I chose the different F keys at the top of the keyboard, to see if it would bring up the different views and it did. The in-game graphics however, were very choppy, but at times the view would be very smooth. I believe if I could set the preferences for the game, it would play. I do not know what file I would need to manually adjust the preferences. And even if I knew the file, I might not be able to open it without a special utility program. I will continue to work with this game to see if I can get it to run as it did in Win 98 when it first came out.

Strike Fighters and Wings over Vietnam plus YAP2
They all run beautifully.

Janes Longbow 2
It also runs very well.

MS Combat Flight Simulator 2
It plays very well. The game downloaded from disks to the HD with no problem, but I could not get the disk to play with my DVD ROM player. After downloading from the Internet, the NoCD.exe file, I was able to open the game and play it. I did not have to use compatibility mode.

I will continue to try other titles that I have and will post what happens

Out of here,
Wired
