Still to come - track recorder (next patch), better control model for PC joysticks and dogfight servers.

Are you sure they did nothing regarding Joystick control / FM in this one? It sure feels a lot less prone to irritating oscillations to me!

Well, I don't know about "fix" for me, but here's the three big things that I've seen:

1) AI seems more "realistic" in that they don't aim very well when in odd flight parameters (during a roll while inverted, etc.).

2) Proper blip switch! Hold it in, engine off; let it go, engine on. This is a real godsend for the Nieuport 17!

3) Improved frame rate. I was managing a median average of 45-50 fps using medium terrain. I saw a bump of 10-20 fps, so I then upped the terrain to high - and am still averaging 50-55 fps. Smooth as silk, even over the front fighting bad guys.

And I guess it's a "fix," but 1.08 didn't break anything for me.

And that is a biggie, nothing got broken.

I just wish that it was this version I tried out for my review over at CombatSim.com.

It would have been a bit kinder...

Yeah, that's what is so sad about small develpers having to push products out on the market when they are not finished... They get lousy reviews (or at least worse reviews than the games really deserve). Combat Mission:Shock Force is another game that comes into mind while thinking of games that where almost unplayable until version 1.08, being released several months after the initial release. That's exactly the same thing that happened there too. I had anticipated it for years (just like RoF) and bought it day one, only to point my shivering finger up in the sky mumbling "God, why do you let this happen? This is not what it should have been!". With CMSF we had loads of patches that did not take away the initial problem that the game was still not out of the Beta phase, but we where paying to test it wink Then suddenly in version 1.08, the skies cleared up - and we saw the product as it was really meant to be! (using this thinking, Windows 7 is really Vista 1.08 ;))

And make sure to expound on how easy it is to tweak the JS settings in game.

Terrain is better now, got a boost in FPS and AI don't out your lights in one pass, a step in the right direction fer sure, just not big enough for me to enlarge my hanger to fit more than the 4 airframes I have ...

I guess the major thing that makes it a lot easier is that the planes are now a lot less "wobbly" in all axis... Before you had oscillations in all axis after small correction that just did not feel right (and made gunnery hopeless).

You're spot on, mazex. All of a sudden I can fly these birds without screwing around with my joystick response settings. And it's a blast! I can actually control the DVII now, and I got my first-ever kills (two, actually) in the little N17...which I'd heretofore written off as hopeless. And with the AI toned down a notch, I find myself being more aggressive and I am getting more kills.

All of this in the old "Russian Roulette" option...I haven't tried the new "Fly Now" option, although I did take a peek at it and that looks like a lot of fun.

Nice job, neoqb!

P.S. I couldn't buy the new planes right away, but hope to tomorrow. Can't wait to take them both for a spin!

In truth, 1.08 is evolutionary rather than revolutionary, which precludes making a new article. Re-writing a review seems kind of Orwellian to me, and addendums can be pretty confusing. In many ways, 1.08 is contrition and restitution for old sins rather than a new initiative.

The next update, however, promises to cross the threshold. DF maps, replay functionality, and a host of other things that will undoubtably come along with it could warrant not a few asterik paragraphs on an old write up, but a full, new article, which will also fold a lot of goodness of 1.08 into it.

Hey, I'm one of the folks that have really, really enjoyed this sim from release, and I've got to say that it's super impressive on how it's been continuously, measureably enhanced in such a short time. One would think, though, that new press that says so would beat out an amendment of old press.
