Update 1.008 (30.10.2009) Patch Notes.
New Features:
- Fokker Dr. I added to the game and available for purchase. - Sopwith Camel added to the game and available for purchase. - New summer textures added. - AI: New maneuver “hook turn” for close air combat added. - AI: New maneuver “rolling” for close air combat added. - PLANES: Blip switch added. Key assignment by default is: Shift + E. - GUI: “Fly now” option added to the main menu. - GRAPHICS: Cartridge belt disappears when out of ammo on Albatros D.Va, Pfalz D.IIIa. - GRAPHICS: Radiator pressure cap added to Pfalz D.XII. - STATS: Destroyed wagons are now counted in statistics. - DOCUMENTATION: Rise of Flight Mission Editor Manual now available.
Changes/Fixes:
- AI: AI pilot shooting accuracy decreased. - AI: AI gunner shooting accuracy decreased. - AI: AI fighters no longer flee from a close fight. - PLANES: Landing gear does not jam when lower wing is damaged. - PLANES: Fokker D.VII now touches ground surface when standing. - PLANES: Planes are now controlled by the lower ailerons when upper ones are damaged. - PLANES: Force Feedback joysticks don’t get stuck in extreme positions when elevator is damaged. - PLANES: Nosed-over planes no longer jump. - GRAPHICS: Sopwith Dolphin’s sideslip indicator animation fixed. - NETWORK: Pilots with empty machineguns can no longer shoot. - GUI: Corrections made to German version. - GUI: Corrections made to French version. - GUI: Corrections made to Spanish version. - GUI: Corrections made to English version. - GUI: Corrections made to Russian version.
Nice to see new summer textures, that was unexpected. The AI changes look more comprehensive than just shooting accuracy. And we get a stonking Mission Editor manual.
Should be available in a couple of hours, by the looks.
Oh, and we get the Camel and Dr I.
Cheers,
RD.

From news section: Hello, I'd like the quickly run down some of the key features of update 1.008. It will bring two new planes in the store (Fokker Dr.I and Sopwith Camel) and will add new summer textures to the game. It will also fix the AI of pilots who sometimes “got out of hand” with their marksmanship skills and it should increase game performance on some systems as well.
Strenuous testing allowed us to spot some bugs that we had previously missed and we were able to squash them. Another new feature is the 'Fly now' option that has been added to the main game menu. With this, you can play a rather simple “sampler” mission that I hope will be helpful to those of you who find 'Rise of Flight' a bit too difficult. We have placed several typical targets such as an echelon, a vehicle column, Russian roulette, a balloon, etc. along a single flight route. We believe it will be useful for training purposes, and while it's not quite as advanced as the quick mission generator that you are waiting for, it's a good first step in that direction and brings us that much closer to the real thing.
We will develop this mission with each update, adding new elements and content, until we will have finished the real 'quick mission generator', which will allow for much easier, and more dynamic, mission creation.
Realism lovers and sticklers will be glad to find a blip switch added to some airplanes along with all the accurate engine behaviors thereof. It uses the Shift+E keys by default but can also be remapped at your convenience. We have also finished the full version of the 'Rise of Flight Mission Editor manual'. It's well over a hundred pages long and we're hoping it helps out the RoF mission designing community.
Some thoughts: Reading the forums, I've been struck by the amount of dissatisfaction due to the lack of information from us regarding the development process. This surprised me, as I always thought we should only announce something if we are sure of it. The development of Rise of Flight, and projects like, are not easy tasks. And there are many moments and situations that are hard to foresee. It only makes sense to let you know what's coming when we are sure we can deliver.
But as I read further, I found that many people are simply interested in HOW it is all done. That is something I can definitely fill you in on and I promise to update you more as we move forward on 1.009. Because it's going to be one interesting update.
We know some users are currently experiencing performance issues. Unfortunately, we have not been able to reproduce similar problems on our systems. It might be because of specific hardware configurations. We are looking into all possible solutions.
Lastly, as is our tradition, congratulations and present are in order for our 6000 (Kneedowndean) and 7000 (Smoke218) customers to our store. Thank you all for your interest for ROF project! As for us, back to work we go.

- AI: AI fighters no longer flee from a close fight. This fix alone will make the game alot more enjoyable. I typically only have time to fly for 20 minutes so Russian Roulette is the best option sometimes. I could never fly the German fighters because my opponents would always fly away (as some say, extend).

Yes they will. The Dr.1 is going to be a killing machine with thoughts spec's! .... Please don't burst my bubble, ...... LOL! Ok, I lied. The Thruth is that Fokker Dr.I was ultimate fighter of the period. Infact so good that only jet planes managed to surpass its perfomance. Reason why it wasnt produces so much was that Oberursel engine required very rare materials to construct and german run out of it. :P P.S Tested both ground lvl speed. Camel about 185km/h and Fokker Dr.I 175km/h.

Just tried out a mission in my current campaign after this new update... totally different experience, the furballs are a lot more chaotic (which is a good thing) found myself ducking a few times to avoid enemy and friendly aircraft. The enemy no longer stay outside the battle but get in and stay in the fight. The new terrain looks great too

Just had a quick spin in both. Dr.I marginally easier to fly in the turns, but they both need careful watching. New terrain looks good, definitely an improvement. Blip switch works well, all I have to do now is work out when to use it for best results. Both of these are a major tonic after my personal disappointment with the Dolphin (no biggie, I always liked the SE.5 better anyway). The Camel could oust the SE though, great fun. No change in the Hangar, it still doesn't remember your previous settings, so the Camel has bombs by default. This has to be the next big fix - please!

For those lucky enough not to be stuck at work, any news on overall performance with 1.008?
I went from being able to apply a healthy dose of AA day 1, to 0xAA post 1.007. Would love to see if this was addressed!

Just noticed that my video memory usage is now at 93% used instead of 68% before with the same settings. interesting. Haven't tried this game out for about two months but this patch plus Dart's AAR have inspired me. Now my only hope is that I can actually run it at all. Oh well.

Good to see that NeoQB have done some work on various problem areas, plus the welcome release of the Camel and Fokker triplane. What are people's views on the rest of the patch? I'm aware that dogfight servers are still not there, but is there other stuff that's worthy of mention (if only by omission!)?

Could anyone with a MSFFB2 stick on Vista64 confirm that the stuttering issue has been resolved ? Thanks.

Can't comment on the Vista64 thingy, but the new AI looks like an improvement and the new terrain textures are nice. The Camel 3D model is extraordinary. I have survived several head-on passes vs AI that preciously would have killed me on the spot. The AI don't extend as regularly as they used to and hang around to fight more. Will have to explore...
Any news on when you get your PC back?
Cheers,
Nick

But it doesnt mean planes perfomance in game is that Yes they will. The Dr.1 is going to be a killing machine with thoughts spec's! .... Please don't burst my bubble, ...... LOL! Well it killed me right quick! Took off, all good.. bit of stress testing, all good.. now lets try some hard maneuvers... at low altitude... oops! No wonder, a Canadian pilot trying to fly a superior German flying machine ....... So, so, SO not nice lol! Has anyone else noticed any new ground objects? Nothing was mentioned in the patch notes of course, but I just came across this neat little Army camp near my Aerodrome. If those were there before today's patch I somehow managed to never see one. If it is new, has anyone seen other new stuff?

So, I can't use it with my friends as we normally would.
NO new planes for us till DF mode is available and operating acceptably.

What about in game joystick calibration? This is as badly needed as DF mode is. I just wobbled about offline for over an hour. Admittedly it's been a long time since I've flown R0F, but I don't remember the "wobbles" being this bad. Accurate aim is virtually impossible for me. And I thought the IL2 P51 was bad. The AI accuracy decrease is welcome. Now how about increasing our accuracy by allowing proper joystick set up? Still a long way till this thing is out of beta, IMHO.

+1 , yes, some of us need/want an ingame method to calibrate our joystick.
Jason, told us that the ROF developers are working on it.
The ROF A/C do wobble about when you try to line up a shot for some of us but some do not seem to have a problem.

Yes, they have always been there. If you go into the mission editor you can see all the (ground) objects in the game.
