I am an advid combat flight sim pilot (Falcon 4.0/AF, WOV, ROF, IL2, BOBWoVII,LOMAC, DCS: BS) with a Cougar HOTAS, CH Pedals, X-Keys Pro, and a home made trim box.

This week I went ahead and purchased FSX Gold edition - it is my very 1st civ flight sim. I am really getting into the flight training and all the various missions. I'm enjoying it so much so that I would like to purchase a yoke.

Does anyone have any good recommendations? CH Eclips, other CH Yoke, Saitek, other?

I had the older model CH yolk and was never happy with it. I now have the Saitek yolk and am very happy with it, chunky, solid and smooth with a good long throw on the throttle quad levers.

Thank you for the link Joe. I remember seeing your article awhile back, but at the time did not really digest the info. I just dont know - the Eclipse has features that I really do not need such as the “thumb-rudders” because I have the Pro Pedals. Also, the placement of the throttle/mixture/Prop Pitch axes seem awkward as you stated.

Reading through reviews I have found the following about Saitek's Yoke:

Pros:
larger, separate throttle
smooth metal shaft

Cons:
Phantom key presses.

Mark, did you have any phantom key press issues with your yoke?

No I haven't had any problems with it at all. I belive the phantom keypress problem you noted was only with the first batch and was fixed with a firmware update.

Do yokes "spring' back to center like in a joystick meaning that if you push the yoke forward which would pitch the aircraft nose down once you release pressure will the yoke "spring" back to center?

This is what CH told me about the Eclipse Yoke:
Quote:
The Y axis… has a general center area, it does not come back to the same center every time unless moved by hand. This is a design element that was requested a long time ago by users of the Virtual Pilot and derivatives, in response to the fact that those controllers had a center detent for the Y axis and the users felt this was unlike a real aircraft."

"So the Flight Sim Yoke and the Eclipse yokes have general center areas for the Y axis and will not pop back into a detent or specific center unless moved by hand. The center area is approximately an inch and a half of travel, some of which is taken up with the null zone (some times called the "dead zone"), an area of electronic non-response which is adjustable in most sims or through Control Manager."
So there is a spring, but not a precise one. The X axis (roll) will snap back to a constant center with the Eclipse Yoke.

That explains a lot and it looks like I am going to go with the CH Flight Sim Yoke due to cost, I have the pro pedals, and product reliability.
