From the prophetic " Foreboding " of 1881 to his " Conclusion " as to what must be the basis of lasting peace, Brandes fearlessly and with a burning sense of justice uncovers various aspects of the war, never allowing himself to be biased.
In liis letter to Clemenceau may be found the key to his attitude:
" But I would confess to you that I have a very high regard for the writer's calling. If he is not Truth's consecrated priest he is only fit to be thrown on the scrap heap."
