Hey guys,

I just uploaded a promo video to give a little peak at the Camel in action against the Dr.1. I did not have time to complete a video for the Dr.1. I hope to have that up Tuesday.

Thanks to WWBrian for helping me film some multi-play tag.

If you stick with the video later on I do my best Snoopy impression and fight you know who.

Give it a few minutes to show. It is also in HD. That may not be available for a few hours.

Enjoy!

And as before, I'm not the best shot and some of the stuff you see is not final and may change by time the plane is released with the next patch.

Jason

Yeah, the aspect ratio is incorrect...

Thanks Jason! Looking forward to these birds. I also like the new (added?) terrain textures. I hope they are in 1.008 as well.
Looking at the movie: I think a lot of players will curse the Camel's top wing when in a dogfight! Oh, and please turn icons off next time Jason! People might get used to the idea of having icons turned on! wink

Thx for video. I can see Camel easily outperforms Dr.I ... also noticed no tendency to drop wing while that red Dr.I was struggling to not drop into spin. Funny...

Lovely vid Jason, and you've pretty much torn me up... I was all set on mastering the Dr.1 first. Looks like I may be crawling all over the Camel instead after that... so turny!

Hopefully the Dr. I is the Nieuport 17 material we've been looking for.

Looks super - roll on 1.008!

I love the little propellor thingy to the right of the pilot's head in the Camel. Presumably, if you are using 6 DoF and lean too far to the right it will cut your ear off?

Cheers,

Nick

Where the ocean meets the sky
Hello,
thanks for the video, well made and good sights at the planes.
We will have to wait a few days for trying this out, but there are some things: When doing a right turn the Camel does not seem to hold any perils in stalling and spinning out of control - at one scene (2/3ds ?) where the Dr.I crashes, the Camel stands on its right wing and circles above, from the airspeed this would have been impossible ? Then i saw the Dr.I always loses its upper wing, but it did not in reality. The predecessoer of the Dr.I, called the F1 (Voss' plane), did.
But really nice to see, i hope the inertia of the engines is modelled in the right way..
Thanks and greetings,
Catfish

The aspect ratio is wrong. I don't know why. It was created in hi-def in wide-angle. Something happened in upload. I will try to fix.

Jason, superb, thank you. I look forward to both aircraft. (Any way you can get them to model the Sopwith Triplane next? A triplane battle would be most excellent) wink

Did someone say there was new terrain? Is this true?

It didn't under heavy fire? I doubt that.

Somebody needs to learn how to blip their engine. The poor thing sounded terrible with the RPMs forced down by way of poor mixture.

wink

Speaking of which, is there a selector for how many cylinders to have fire at a time?

And will we get the video where Brian says "Okay, you shot me down enough, let me do you now" for the DR1 promotion?

hahaha

That was fun Jason!

You know, showing all that tight turning dogfighting is just going to make waiting for the DF mode that much harder! hahaha

Ya know? I think that name just might stick. Jason aka "SNOOPY."

The Camel seems a lot more stable than I thought she's be. Nice flying. I'll be purchasing both planes.

From the video it does look like an incredibly stable, highly maneuverable bird with a splendid roll rate and decent speed to boost.

This is going to be one popular ride.

Maybe a bit too popular to Central flyers' liking.

I hope it is just Jason's great flying that makes it look easy! The Camel was notorious for being just as deadly to its pilots as it was to its enemies. Everything and I mean everything I read said it was vicious in a right hand turn and required almost full left rudder and a lot of concentration in a right turn or it would lose control.

So I sincerely hope Neoqb have not dumbed down the FM.

From the following link.

http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qa3897/is_199808/ai_n8823870/?tag=content;col1

"A right turn is an entirely different and somewhat disconcerting maneuver. Keeping the engine at 1,200rpm and with 120mph airspeed, I bank to the right, wind hitting hard against my left cheek. With the left side of the rudder bar almost fully deflected and my right knee jammed back almost to the seat, I am barely able to maintain a 30-degree bank to the right without the bank increasing. It is not a smooth right turn in any sense of the word. It takes a lot of concentration and a delicate touch with my feet on the rudder bar to maintain the constant angle of bank for the entire 360 degrees of the turn. In reality, it probably took less time to make the 360-degree right turn, but it was fatiguing and seemed to take forever to get back on my original heading."

From the following link

http://www.theaerodrome.com/aircraft/gbritain/sopwith_camel.php

"A great number of trainee pilots had been killed learning to fly this machine, as its tricks took some learning, although they were really simple to overcome. Its main trouble was that owing to its very small wingspan, and its purposely unstable characteristics, coupled with the gyroscopic effect of a rotating engine and propeller, it flipped into a spin very easily at low speeds. Consequently, in landing and taking off, a tremendous number of fatal accidents occurred, and a general felling of dislike for the machine was prevalent. It really had people frightened." Arthur Cobby

From Flying the Old Planes, by Frank Tallman, 1973

"Turns are what the Camel is all about. Turning to the right with the torque requires the top rudder to hold the nose up, and the speed with which you can complete a 360-degree turn is breathtaking. Left turns are slower, with the nose wanting to rise during the turn. But small rudder input easily keeps the nose level with the horizon. In stalls at 35 to 40 mph the nose drops frighteningly fast and hard to the right, but you also get control back quickly, although a surprising amount of altitude has been lost. I have had the pleasure of limited dog fighting with other WWI fighters, and there are none that can stay with a Camel in a turn."
