Gentlemen .... Please note that Windows 7 is NOT just windows 7.

There is:

1) "Windows 7 Home Premium"
2) "Windows 7 Professional"
3) "Windows 7 Ultimate"

And a few more minor versions for notepads, or others for Enterprise distributions etc and that are not interesting for this discussion.

The most common version will be "Windows 7 Home Premium" as it is geared for the ordinary home user.

This discussion is geared only for this "Windows 7 Home Premium" version of the operating system, as this version will be the most common version being used by the average user.

From the following Microsoft link: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/products/features/windows-xp-mode

We have this bit of text
Quote:
Windows XP Mode

It's the best of both worlds: The new Windows XP Mode lets you run older Windows XP business software right on your Windows 7 desktop.

Designed primarily with small- and medium-sized businesses in mind, Windows XP Mode comes as a separate download and works only with Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate. Windows XP Mode also requires virtualization software such as Windows Virtual PC. Both are available free on the Microsoft website.

NOTE this bit of text "and works only with Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate."

It is important NOT to confuse the issue with any of the Win7 beta tests as they were all done using the highest version of the code base. This compatibility mode was already active in the Beta tests.

We require testing with the retail version of "Windows 7 Home Premium".

Microsoft has been wanting for a long time to cut backwards compatibility, as it allows them to clean up some very messy code requirements. Is this the start of that journey. Maybe this is the time of DX10 upwards. frown

As far as i understand MadProf run EAW on "Windows 7 Home Premium" and anyway, noone ever did activate the "Windows XP Mode", as such EAW already got tested somewhat successfully.

Hi Ralf,

According to the post from MadProf "My new comp is running Windows 7 evaluation copy, build 7100."

It therefor is not the retail version of "Windows 7 Home Premium".

Any of the BETA builds of Win7 have everything functional.

It is the retail version of "Windows 7 Home Premium" that has to be tested.

Hopefully soon some one will be able to answer this question.

Regards Syddy. smile

For those debating whether or not to Dual Boot Win & and XP there are issues not readily apparent.

Check out the following article, Create a Win XP & Win 7 setup .
Please read down the posts esp. for anything concerning XP deleting W7 restore points.
It seems Microsoft is getting more serious about not supporting older apps.

I'm using separate physical drives for each OS. Partitioning allow OS space to be minimized, Data stored elsewhere.Drive costs are low, esp for 80+/-GB, so why not?

Plus I always wash my hands after going online, no H1N1 for me biggrin

Jacko

Before you rush out, I just ran the windows 7 upgrade manager program on my computer to find VS6 and Delphi 7 are not supported. Looks like WinBlows 7 is out if you want to code with old tools.

Hey Brit44 'Aldo' .... just on an off note.
You should give "VisualStudio 2010 Express Beta2" a try out if you get the time. It is now much faster than the earlier Beta 1 version and the error detection during code writing is just brilliant.

I have switched over to this version myself. I just can not praise it enough. smile

Sydbod,
The last year has been a nightmare of correcting errors for code and project settings caused by my previous thinking I knew what I was doing and I can get more FPS from old code. Granted the problems did not turn out to be related to converting to versions of Express, but the confusion did not help the learning curve.

Keep pointing the way, wink as we get smarter your words sink in.

frown the lack of backward compatability for anchient compilers has struck this hobbiest square in the heart.
