I never got around to testing EAW with "Windows 7" .... too many other things on my plate.

I just noticed that "WindowsXP compatibility mode" (I assume we will require this to run the earlier programs) is only available for, and works only with Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate editions.

Should some one get the more basic editions of "Windows 7", could they please try out EAW on it to see if it will run, and let this forum know of the outcome.

Regards Syddy. smile

Hi Sydbod.

Tony tried EAW with the Beta version of Windows 7, and he reported that EAW worked fine under the new OS. smile

Hi Col. Gibbon,

That is the trouble ... I believe that he used the beta for "Windows 7 Ultimate" edition.
That is the top line "mega $" version. The ordinary user will be getting the normal version "Windows 7 Home Premium", and this will not be able to run "Windows XP Mode" compatibility.

I am worried that EAW may have come to a dead end for most "Windows 7" users.

Hi Sydbod.

I'll be surprised if Windows 7 will be taken up very fast after the mess Vista was. Only new computers will have it loaded, but for the others, once bitten twice shy?

The BBC was singing from the hymen book of Billy Boy, but then they interviewed the man who has just rebuilt Colossus, and he said why bother updating when you have XP. biggrin

Guys, this is a critical question to me. I am on the verge of buying a new system within 10 days and am trying to ensure that it will run EAW.

History.

I bought a laptop with Vista installed and an nVidia card. As a member of the code development team I was curious to see if EAW ran on Vista, so copied my EAW folder from my PC and discovered that EAW ran with no 7217 error.
I bought Vista (32 bit) and installed it on one of my caddy HDDs- it ran EAW well, apart from a horizon fog problem with the nVidia card, and the garbled map screen. We never found a regedit routine which could be applied to Vista to fix the mapscreen. The glide wrapper fixed the fog.

When I heard about Win 7 I wondered if it would run EAW. I have tested both the 32 and 64 bit beta versions, including the release candidate.
It runs well. I have used my Win 7 HDD to fly online at GameRanger.

I have never knowingly used compatibility mode, and have never installed EAW on a Vista or Win 7 drive - I always use copies. My PC has a Radeon card, and I run in D3D mode, getting good framerates and horizon fog.

My new comp is running Windows 7 evaluation copy, build 7100.

EAW runs, only problem is that on this comp I have psycho
colours with the screens. If I go to multi-player as Jelly said
in a previous post, the screens clear up until I come out of a
mission then the psycho colours return. Briefing room and map
in campaign mode are scrambled.

In game no problem.

My personal evaluation, playable yes, problems yes.

Comp specs are.
Intel Core i7 2.6Ghz
6 Gigs of Ram
64 Bit Windows 7
Nvidia Geforce GTX 260 896mb

Cheers,
MadProf

Agreed Jeff- Win 7 is more prone to the psycho problems than XP. CJ's 1024x768 fix works for the maps.
