I picked up my copy at Gamestop yesterday and went home to check it out. I started playing SP at 1:30 PM, created a new character (Roland the soldier) and began to get familiar with Borderlands. Jeevz came on shortly after and we started playing co-op. Later, Master and dude joined us, so we had 3-4 players for most of the session. Quests are available from either NPCs or a Bounty Board. Successful quests are awarded with a bounty as you progress through the game. You can use your loot to buy upgrades, med packs, etc. from vending machines scattered throughout Pandora. You can also sell items that you picked up at the vending machines. Borderlands is a sandbox type game. You can go anywhere on foot or by vehicle that is physically accessible. Also, there are teleports that rapidly move the players around Pandora. For me, this game has the right mix of combat, fun, discovery, etc. I didn't notice any lag or major gameplay issues. I fell into a spot between buildings and storage tanks that I could not get out of while trying to get on a roof. Fortunately, dude was able to pull a vehicle close enough that I could board it as a gunner. Later Jeevz got trapped somewhere and we agreed it was a good time to quit. I suppose a player could drop a grenade and commit suicide to respawn in the rare occasion that he or she gets trapped somewhere. Respawns are not free. The player is charged for them and you are returned to the starting point for that level. So you may have to travel for a bit to rejoin your comrades. Dying has consequences. The combat was fun and at times frenetic with each player class showcasing their character's skills.

In summary, I played until 7:30 PM in that session with no breaks and no chow since breakfast. My breakfast was light yesterday, so I was starved. Like most co-op games with team players, there is mutual support and camraderie. Loot that is picked up, quests that are completed and awarded, and XP are automatically divided among the players. Ammo, med kits, guns, etc. that are dropped in combat can be picked up by any individual player. We shared that among the players. The game makes some fun/realism tradeoffs. For example you can sprint forever. There is no stamina meter. You can jump from heights that would cause damage to the player in other games, but not here. Considering the game concept and gameplay, those things don't affect my enjoyment of Borderlands.

If you enjoy shooters with an RPG theme, sprint to a store and pick up a copy of Borderlands. This is going to be one of those games that I play for countless hours. 4 distinct character classes, large maps with the freedom to choose your strategy will provide long legs and replayability for this game. I'm loving it so far and I can't wait to play some more this evening!

I think the game is amazing but it could use a bit more polish. For instance if you go to someone else's coop game without finishing the tutorial you cant finish the tutorial unless you start a split screen coop with a new character and walk your old one through the tutorials section. Still, that is a minor gripe.

I had to leave for dinner around 8:30 ish as I didnt eat anything all day. When I came back I played some coop with a guy from gearbox. He was level 50. he didnt have any high level equipment though. Supposedly there is a way to level your character up automatically with the dev tools but there is no way to spawn loot. You cant even force specific loot into a box. The whole loot system is completely random.

Anyways. Off to work in my gaming coma. My eyes feel like they are going to bleed...

If I can spare the cash I'll pick it up this week but with Forza3 due out early next week I just don't know if I can do it. Plus, CoD:MW2 is right around the corner and then L4D:2.

Damn, it's gonna be a fun winter.

Honestly, it's everything I hoped it would be so far. Gearbox absolutely nailed the action-RPG feel with a shooter. The shooting mechanics are right up there with CoD, Battlefield and even some Halo. Apart from the low level vendor trash the guns really do feel different, it's going to be hard not running around with a nearly full inventory all the time since you find so many cool guns that would be useful in certain situations.

The difficulty ramp seems good, with 4 people the game requires teamwork like L4D since the game is throwing masses of tough baddies at you. With 3 on it wasn't so hectic but still was challenging enough that we had to watch one another's backs or we'd be reviving each other again.

All in all I'm nothing but happy with Borderlands. I'm here at work and already wishing I could check out to go grab more loot even though, like Master, I am a zombie thanks to the "just one more quest" thing Borderlands has going on.

How is it in single-player? I rarely find the time for longer multiplayer sessions.

It is pretty good in single player. In fact at least the early part of the game (sub level20) is an amazing game on it's own in the single player portion. It is just 100 times better in coop mode.

Snapdad2112 - Walk up to one of the vending machines close enough so that it prompts you to push the "X" button to use it. There is a panel on the vending machine that you look at to activate it and then press "X". When you get the pop up menu, hit your left or right bumper pads on the controller until you see the sell screen. After that, use the LS or RS to navigate to the item that you want to sell in your inventory. I think on the bottom right of the screen, it has a description of the highlighted item and the sale price. Press the "A" button on the controller to accept the sale. Your total cash will be increased by the sale amount and the transaction is complete. You can also buy equipment, med kits, etc. in the same way. Just use the left or right bumper pads to navigate to the buy screen and select the item that you want. There is also a buy back option in case you sold something that you want to buy back later.

I hope that helps. I'm a little groggy since it's early and I haven't had my coffee yet. Smile2

I have to admit... I've been avoiding this game, your post about it, and reviews because I just don't have time for another game... with OFP DR out, FM3 coming next Wed. then MW2 11/10/09...

But everywhere I got theirs post about it, and it's getting great review numbers... 8's and 9's... But I must fight the urge. wink

It's one of the best coop games ever made. Fun in SP too but coop is a blast. Replace L4D2 with Borderlands on your buy list.

Im in another zombie gaming coma today and no ammount of caffeine seems to be helping... I think I am about level 22 now and moved out of the starting area. I lost about 30k though when I stumbled upon an area with level 24 badasses and they chased me back to the starting point and killed me and then proceeded to kill me for 10 minutes until I finally killed a few of them and ran like the wind.

I must not play this game till 3-4am again tonight or I think it might kill me... although it might be worth it!

No but I have seen one in the store but it wasnt even as good as my main green gun. It might have had extra hidden effects though but it didnt seem worth the money unless I just wanted something orange and useless.

I haven't found any either. I have a few blues and purples but no oranges. I have a pretty mean blue sniper that does 1500 damage on critical hits.

I cant hit crapola with the snipers, my pal who was going to *rent * it, bought it instead ( canadian Wal Mart had it for 39) and he is deadly with it , Iplayed cop with just him and some of the fights were crazy, but great fun too!

Ill use my Brick with you guys and my siren with him, what amazes me is that the guns actually do feel different, and the gear you equip that suits your playstyle can really make or break the combats.

Im preferring the SMGs and Combat Rifles , I even sold a purple sniper but it was level 11 requirement , we found a chest last night with 2 level 22 weapons a CR and a shotgun, but we were level 13 frown

I noticed that to respec your character it costs you about 10% of your total income. About the same as if you would die. Here recently I have been respec'ing my character every time I switch between coop and single player. It has made quite a bit of difference in how well I can use my character in each situation.

Seems this is one of those games that gives me GTA-like motion sickness headache. Takes an awful lot of shots to kill, even headshots. After IL2 and OF I'm not sure this is the time for me to play this one, may have to wait a while.
I do like the visual style and environment though. Looks like a game with a good sense of humor too.

It doesnt give me headaches but it makes my eyes very sore from all the refocusing. My eyes have been bloodshot since about noon tuesday. I am hoping the computer version fixes some of the pains this game gives me but it may just take time to get used to it. I think my main problem is that the FOV is too narrow which forces you to pan when you really shouldn't have to.

Number of shots depends a lot on your skill tree and the weapon. My hunter kills just about everything except bosses, badasses and brusiers with 1 critical hit. Adult Skags and Brusiers take 2. The accuracy of your weapon makes a difference as well, anything less than 100% has a spread even scoped in.

I don't ordinarily like cell shading but I like the look of this game. The look and atmosphere drew me in quickly. It also has a sense of humor. Some blind guy sitting on his front porch talking about having to "take a dump" and then said "never mind, it passed". I chuckled on that one.

I only played for about 20-30 minutes so I'm only at Level 2 so it's still a bit difficulty to kill even the weaker foes (I'm playing as a Soldier, as I read a review that said that was the best choice).

I liked the intro and the song that went along with it. Catchy.

I saw a bunch of different people on playing tonight, I'm going to have to start some more characters so I have a good spread of levels for joining games.

Just wait until you start getting to the really cool guns Leemz. Right now I've got a sniper rifle that fires explosive bullets and a super powerful revolver that sets people on fire just to name a few.

Great fun

last night when I dropped out because I wasnt far enough in the story, I literaly had to cash in the quest before that bossfight, so if i'd played for 2 minutes offline, I wouldnt have wasted all that effort

( great loot though!)

jeevz , I agree, thats what I did , I have brick to play with you guys, and a siren to play with that local pal of mine , all I need now is a soldier and I have 4 characters , having a dedicated coop character is fun

I wonder if the next iteration of Borderlands will be an MMO game. It already fits the style but this is one I'd happily susbscribe to.

Well most subscription model games, the ones that last any way, have a pretty constant stream of new content. I would expect that in a Borderlands MMO, I wouldn't want to pay a subscription in it's current form though I agree with Master that Borderlands is easily GOTY so far.

No subscriptions for me. Paying for Live is as far as I'm willing to go. Too many other games out there to warrant paying for this one.

And it's too early for me to declare it GoTY. But, then, of course, I'm still only a Level 2! LOL!

Maybe I'm being misunderstood. I mean if there's an MMO sequel based on this game then I would sign up. The game plays very much like an MMO eg. leveled loot, instances, respawning bosses to farm, stacking quests, the types of quests, "zones", etc. It almost feels like a test run for a true shooter MMO.

Oh dear God, I'm so addicted to this game, been playing it non-stop the entire weekend with two British mates, it's so much fun, especially with decent people that know how to co-op!

I'm a Soldier with Support Gunner class-mod, my turret very quickly regenerates health and ammo to all those near it(It's saved our lives countless of times)!

Honestly, this game is GOTY in my eyes, no doubt about it!

Picked up the game today, having a blast with it. I think its time for me to get my Xbox connected to the net, just for this game.

I've put about 6 hours into the game so far. I am enjoying it, but its also frustrating. I'm a singleplayer kind of guy, and what I'd heard is that this game was fine in that respect, except that it felt "lonely" Yea well come to find out, to me a least, they design the bosses with enough health that you need two players to be able to take one down. Another thing I don't like, those stupid skags. If they didn't move so fast I'd be a little more ok with it, but I'm sick of wasting half my ammo on these stupid things, for little to no reward. It's also annoying how they can overwhelm you in seconds.

Carry around a shotgun for the skags, in single player you can pause to swap weapons so it's easier to get the right weapon for the right situation. Shotguns, especially scoped ones, are good for Rakk as well.

Yea that's been my weapon of choice so far. Guess the one I have right now is still pretty weak though.
