We have skunk in the neighbourhood and he sprays every year in the fall.
The smell is overbearing.

Tonight at about 9PM I was on the patio haveing a coffee and reading the newspaper.
I just happened to look to my right and there was a large skunk waddling towards me about 5 feet away. I jumped...the skunk jumped, turned around and waddled off around the corner of the building.
They must have poor eyesight and a poor sense of smell.

I have never seen it before in the three years I have been living here. Strange there is no Forrest near here but it must live in the neighbourhood.

Lucky I wasn't sprayed as I must have startled it when I jumped up.

Usually they run off whe startled. It's only when skunks feel threatened that they spray. They know they have a white stripe and animals give it a wiiiiiiiiide berth.

I live in an apartment complex and my neighbor has a habit of feeding this one feral cat. The cats a jewel and kisses up to a few of the inhabitants including me. The problem arises when that neighbor doesn't take the cat tray inside before dusk. On a few occasions I'll be coming into the building from the parking lot and a skunk will be in the cat food bowl. I tried everything I could to get it away to know avail. I wasn't about to risk getting sprayed.

As a kid my sister was sprayed once. Our labrador retriever was sprayed too. It's bad enough on your car when you accidently run over a carcass. It doesn't even come close to the god aweful first hand spraying. That was a loooooooong spring.

Glad you weren't sprayed, gbarclay.

It's looking for a decent lawyer, so it can file a suit against your neighborhood, to reclaim it's ancestoral lands. smile

Where I grew up there was lots of skunks. One night Dad let the dog out (Beagle-Collie mix) before going to bed. Usually she would at the door wanting back in fairly quickly so he went to see what was taking her so long. Now Dad grew up in the country and had dogs sprayed by skunks so he almost had a fit when he saw her playing with this black animal which when he got closer turned out to be a skunk, a BIG skunk. He called her and she came to him and the skunk went on its merry way. Never could understand this playing with the skunk as she chased wild animals all the time.

knightgames, try hitting a skunk on a motorcycle. biggrin Yup that happened. It wasn't a full contact or I wouldn't be writing this but close enough to have some skunk hairs in the foot rest and a stench for a week afterwards.

My girlfriend and I were walking through our new neighbourhood about a month ago near midnight. I looked up and thought, look at the size of that cat. It was huge for a cat. Then I saw it a bit better and noticed the large white stripe. I mean, this thing was massive.

My nose just started burning as I read about your motorcycle and the skunk story, Kunuck. LOL A nice beautiful summernight ride made all the more memorable by a close encounter of the smelly kind.
