As a kid my sister was sprayed once. Our labrador retriever was sprayed too. It's bad enough on your car when you accidently run over a carcass. It doesn't even come close to the god aweful first hand spraying. That was a loooooooong spring.
Where I grew up there was lots of skunks. One night Dad let the dog out (Beagle-Collie mix) before going to bed. Usually she would at the door wanting back in fairly quickly so he went to see what was taking her so long. Now Dad grew up in the country and had dogs sprayed by skunks so he almost had a fit when he saw her playing with this black animal which when he got closer turned out to be a skunk, a BIG skunk. He called her and she came to him and the skunk went on its merry way. Never could understand this playing with the skunk as she chased wild animals all the time.
knightgames, try hitting a skunk on a motorcycle.

Yup that happened. It wasn't a full contact or I wouldn't be writing this but close enough to have some skunk hairs in the foot rest and a stench for a week afterwards.
