I guess with rifle ranges no longer in use there are no more poor 'cruits running around in the pits looking for 20 yards of firing line. Ready on the left, ready on the right, ready on the firing line...lock and load eight rounds of Ball ammunition. Some things just never leave your memory.

Don't forget looking for soft spots on the armor on the outside of an APC with a ball peen hammer and a piece of chalk. Hank: Is there anyone down range...is there anyone down range....if there is anyone down range, make it known now by sight or sound.....the range is clear...."It's burned into hard memory.

The Area J I know is a training area at Ft Bragg. Seems to go along with the canopy (parachute) lights.
I hated running back there on them deep sandy roads...
Now hears a hammer and some chalk... Go check that M113 for soft spots...

LOL, Omega, I got caught with that, actually.
In my defense, we were in hour 48 of field recovery which had somehow been married to Q4 services and I came to precisely one and a half circles down the track.
Not that it matters - the first blow of the hammer = fell for it, hook, line, and sinker.
I got in trouble for all the pranks being pulled once, though. One of my NCO's sent me to the arms room to see if he had any ammo for the grease guns. I shammed out for an hour instead, thinking it was a joke.
Uh, no. The unit still had a few M3's in the rack, and he was going to take us to the range and fire them before someone woke up to it and had them removed. Baumholder was fun - Jeeps and Gamma Goats in the motor pool, M3's on the end of the row of M16A1's in the arms room, M60's on the tank line, supported by M113's carrying Infantry....and it was 1987-8!

Yep, out behind the parachute rigging tower. I don't remember it having a gate, though. The way I always heard it wa "the keys to the impact area." How about chemlite batteries, and "BA 1100 Novembers."

Remembering your first day is always good for a few laughs too. I had no sooner gotten sworn in with a group of about twenty others when the Sgt. doing the swear in procedure hands me a five and says "go get me and the Captain two coffees at the diner across the street...and remember you are in the Army and if you don't come back the MP's will find you and you'll go to prison", "OooKay sarge I'll be back", hell I was RA, I had joined not been drafted, I was already here on my own. After a train ride to Ft.Dix we got a bus ride to a building where we were issued our first gear, a raincoat and a fatigue hat, thankfully since it was February and the weather was between rain and sleet and miserably cold. We put the hat and coat on and were taken outside where we stood in the mud and got to test out our new stuff while a cpl. stood under an overhang smoking a butt and drinking coffee. After about ten minutes he saw we were getting a little antsy along with getting wet so he gives us an update..."the sgt. is inside having a coke and we'll take you to the mess hall as soon as he is done." At least he was honest, no reason to lie to lower than whale crap recruits. Welcome to the Army

LOL!!! We actually have these in the Canadian Army! Our winter warfare arctic tents (10 man?) use a single tent pole that is centered, and it telescopes upward, similar to a hydraulic jack.
