I'm wondering if Nvidia has recently taken enough blows to the pocket book to put it into significant financial trouble. Opinions? Here are some articles to sum up their recent situation.

Btw, I just read this first one -- I haven't sold comps in a while, so I'm out of the loop.

"Apple drops Nvidia Support":
http://www.memorybits.co.uk/blogbits/apple-drops-nvidia-support-for-3-4-years/
*Summary: You'll remember Nvidia has f'd up many of their chipsets for over a year now, leading to mass failures, recalls and a flurry of class action lawsuits against Dell, HP and Apple, who in turn sued Nvidia b/c NV simply lied about it for a long time. Really they're getting what they deserve.

And now this? "Intel suits halt development of future Nvidia chipsets"
http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/09/...a_chipsets.html
*Summary: Intel tells Nvidia to stop making chipsets for their new & popular CPU architecture. Nvidia complies.

By now you may have heard to rumors of Nvidia encountering part shortages and low profit from high-end chipsets, and may be withdrawing from high-end card market for now?

And now this!
http://www.glgroup.com/News/Even-2-D-Use...tems-44015.html
*Summary: Intel using integrated graphics for its new mid-range i3/i5 boards. Possibly moving it all onto the CPU die? Memory controllers already moved onto the die for newer CPUS. Supposition from me: These mid-range chips will be the standard in laptops, which usually don't require heavy 3d graphics power. Problem for Nvidia that intel no longer needs their high performance chipsets?

This makes you wonder if there is any credence to that rumor about Nvidia dropping their 2XX line. Seems that their clients are walking away from them, either b/c Nvidia screwed them or in the case of Intel, because they don't need them as much anymore. Couple this with the fact that AMD (ahem, ATI) has been refining its own chipset lines in the past few years, the lawsuits, the fact that most C2D/C2Q mobos didn't even support SLI (unless you bought one with an Nvidia chipset which, you guessed it, had problems), and AMD/ATI's comeback by finally turning out some competitive CPU's and video cards. I'm thinking Nvidia may be sizzling in some seriously hot water right about now. The economy at large can't be helping. Anyone know when they'll publish their fiscal earnings?

damn, this sucks. I don't prefer one or the other, but if nvidia goes down then so much for cheap ATI boards

I'm an ATI fan because I prefer not to support a company with Nvidia's business practices. I'm surprised they are in serious trouble, but I understand why they may be.

Hopefully, Nvidia can recover to be competitive. In the mean time, maybe a few Nvidia fans will try ATI and see what they are missing smile

BTW, ATI will be coming out with an all-new architecture in 2010. Based on its code name, I think it may represent a breakthrough. Nvidia's engineering has been stilted for quite some time. Hopefully, they will respond and "the game will be on".

Competition is good.

I'm really at a point where I don't care one way or another, I just want my godamn GFX card NOW.

Longterm of course it's bad for all of us if Nvidia goes bust.

I'd have a hard time believing Nvidia will just go away so suddenly.

Just with the HD 2/3*** series, ATI did pretty bad. 8 months late with cards that were just fast fast?

It seems like every other two years they switch positions. ATI just got back on top, and they will switch positions in the next 1-2 years again.

At least I hope so.

Well, I can't recall a time before when the market was so empty of cards, and one of the two dropped their whole stock for artificial reasons. Nvidia is destroying a lot of loyalty by pulling the rug out under their customers, many perfectly happy to buy an "older" card at a fair price.

Deep in the Leng Plateau
nVidia's stocks are at 14.00 up around 100% from last year at this time, but still lower than their all time high (I believe) of around 35.00 in 2007. Not bad considering this economy. Their investors at least for now haven't dropped out from under nVidia.

The internet is filled with hysterical rumors. AMD/ATI was in seemingly dire straights not long ago but they have survived after a few years of an abysmal product pipeline and the ATI portion is at least producing top-of-the-line products. I am not saying nVidia may not be in trouble but it may not be as grim as it may seem.

I just updated my order for the new custom built rig from a GTX285 to a Sapphire HD5870 - and swapped the 780a NForce chipset for a 790GX on an Asus board.

As far as I'm concerned, Nvidia is making a key tactical mistake by annoying their customers. It's one thing that ATI can't deliver enough volume on the brand new cards, but pulling a product from the market your customers wanted to buy and which was available in quantity already just makes you look stupid.

I recall people proclaiming Nvidia's doom around the time the Voodoo 3 was released by 3dfx....

They survived fine before entering the M/B market I would imagine they can survive until the suit is resolved.

Besides, I heard that Intel is just trying to position themselves to acquire Nvidia to follow with ATI/AMD and S3 is making a huge comeback........(nah, not really, I just made all that up) wink

I'm a fan of the best performance for the price when it comes to graphics cards. Both of their business practices could use a make over.

You know, that's a really good point. Maybe that rut was responsible for their turnaround. Hopefully Nvidia has something to learn from this. I swear that company is made up of pathological liars. A dent in their pocketbooks will make them reconsider their practices.
