Many of you who know that TAW 2.0 has been released may be wondering what has taken me so long to make the announcement here. The rest of you that know about TAW 2.0 may be wondering If I have gone mad making the announcement here. For the rest of you, Total Air War 2.0 is out! It is not an official release, but rather a total conversion of the original Total Air War with a plethora of enhancements. Among other new features, the latest release now features a complete overhaul of the in-game graphics. I may be biased in this regard, but I haven't had this much fun with TAW since the days of the original release! I will reiterate SimHQ's policy on the TAW 2008/TAW 2.0 mod: they will not allow direct links to the mod or its thread, but they will allow announcements, discussions, et al. To this end, I wish to point you to the TAW Wiki site , which also serves as a repository for all things TAW. This includes available mods, modding instructions, file formats, technical data, and wishlists for future efforts. Also, be sure to check out the Total Air War 2.0 YouTube video, available here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbTeIp15Ta4 Lastly, please feel free to update the TAW Wiki as you see fit. There is so much information available here, but it can be hard to find if you don't know where or how far back to look. I'm hoping to make this wiki a thorough resource for TAW modders. Thanks for your support,

PAK_Generic.001 in NVGTool.exe.
Trend Micro OfficeScan. Any virus alerts are false positives. NVGTool accesses memory registers and intercepts data. This is what allows you to cycle NVGs while zoomed into a MFD. It was built using Game Trainer Studio 1.6, which may trip some antiviruses. We were getting more false positives with the beta version, but I had thought we had removed enough specific filenames that would trip antiviruses. I'll go ahead and update the readme file and known issues thread to make note of this fact. If you choose not to run NVGTool, you may still run TAW 2.0. Just open the \Config\winver.cfg file in your TAW 2.0 folder and replace your operating system with "Win98" (no quotes).

FYI, TAW 2.01 is now out. It addresses the following issues: - Fixed errors in five night textures
- Added 3 and SST files of various civilian airlines to prevent crashes to desktop on rare occasions during custom missions
- Updated miscellaneous PCX files
- Fixed jet exhaust tail feathers on the F-22 Desert Camo pattern
- Added the option to disable nvgtool.exe via installer and by datafile edit (see the Manual Addendum for more detail)
- Reverted the default sensor on the UFD to IRST and made a minor nomenclature correction on one of the MFDs
- Updated the installer to properly assign the working folder in tawbc.ini
- Updated the installer to allow for NVG Tool and Video Playback options during selection
TAW 2.01 is available both as a patch and as a full install.

Is there any way to have all the new skins/hi-res HUD etc but keep the original DID terrain graphics? I rather liked the look of the original under glide but wish to keep the v2.0 improvments.

I didn't see that one coming! Best bet is to install the Nostalgia mod first, then install your other mods on top of this. You will get a warning that you are about to overwrite files, but this is ok; GME keeps track of what is overwritten by what. For HUDs, you have your choice of either the 1.5 HUD, or the British variant of the HUD (which says Reheat instead of Afterburner). Either way, you get the new HUD features.

'Wee' Mac, I am also partial to the 'Glide' look of the original TAW for multiple reasons (but I must say the new terrain really grows on you after a while and becomes quite acceptable ). Some time ago I came up with a compromise solution which is very easy to implement. I have an extracted palette file that was an original D.I.D. palette but not used by the default game. Simply substituting that file for the original maintains the basic TAW terrain but with some highlights that are, IMHO, quite impressive. Let me know if your interested?

Guys,
If there is enough demand, I can create a mod package that involves the original terrain and palettes, and nothing else. I just didn't anticipate a wish to revert to the default terrain on a consistent basis.
Let me know, and I'll put one together. DKD, I'm also interested to see what palettes you are using for your described enhancement.

Well, this is definitely another option. If HF wants to add this in the form of a mod option that would be fine, but you are certainly welcome to a copy if you PM me with a destination address. The solution is a substituion palette for day time slot palettes found in the "colours" folder. I use it to substitute for 1000pal.col, 1200pal.col, 1400pal.col and 1800pal.col. It is quite simple to add, simply backup your current files you will be substituting. Place this file in your colours folder and copy it to create the total number of files you intend to substitute. Then rename the newly copied files to match the palette files names you are substituting. HF: I'll fire an email off to you.

Interesting palette, DKD. Looks like DID was using this for the basis of less-than-ideal weather. The colors remind me of light overcast, and is definitely a great palette for D3D.
The beauty of 2.0 is that skies notwithstanding, I only modified parts of two of the rows (the lighter shades of sand, and the water row). This means that converting an original palette to the 2.0 color scheme is fairly easy to do.
As far as weather goes, I'm kind of stuck with trying to get the EF2000 clouds to work in TAW. Problem is that the clouds themselves use different spots in the palettes, and there is no thickness/transparency in the EF2000 clouds like there is in TAW. I'm sure I'll figure something out; it only took me 4 months or so to figure out how to get Polak's textures to work in 2.0.
Once I figure out the clouds, I'll definitely add this palette to the mix. In the meantime, I'll put together a classic graphics mod for separate download (this will not be part of the default install).

For those of you who like the original TAW graphics over the TAW 2.0 tiles, but wish to keep the other TAW 2.0 enhancements, a mod allowing for this has been released. You may download the mod here: TAW 2008 Colors and Tiles for TAW 2.0 - Version 1.0.zip
