Hey all - I'm thinking of getting the Dell 2709W to replace my old NEC 21". The Dells' native res is 1920x1200 - wondering if anybody is running this and if it's working ok.

I’m also running 1920x1200 on a 24” Samsung Syncmaster and it works great but that’s on an unmodified 4.08 and 4.09beta1. If you get in to MODs it’s a complete different story. I recommend you to run console command
Code:
fps START SHOW all
and experiment with settings for MOD’ed and UNMOD’ed settings. Every computer is different in OS and running applications/services so you need to find the best setting for your display. Experiment with the fps information, display driver settings and hardening your OS to max out graphics in your game. I run all the MOD’s in different IL-2 folders on one drive, works like magic. There is loads of stuff written about the topic in this and other forums.

I have an Acer X241W = 24" x 1920 x 1200 monitor x 60 hz

The monitor will not render at 1920 x 1080 I get the venetian blind effects.

My VC is 8800 GTX 512MB nvidia

The standard for HDTV is 1920 x 1080 and from all the monitors I'm seeing in advertisements and such the 1920 x 1080 seems to be the popular resolution.

I cannot go to dual monitor with one card unless I get a 1920 x 1200 monitor is my understanding.

The new nVidia 3d glasses will only work with 120 hz monitor and so far the Samsung and Viewsonic offer the monitor in 22" only. Also resolution is 1920 x 1080 for those monitors.

I would only buy a 120 hz monitor at this time, because it is probably going to be a necessity (standard) in the newer games.

I've been running 1920x1200x32 for a long time now and it works just fine for me.

The native res of The Samsung 2233RZ 120MHZ Monitor is 1600X1050.

No problems here...

yes i do, but i am not sure why the brand of monitor would matter to you when asking how good/bad this monitor is for il2 or general gaming use.

btw most lcd's between 23 and 28' are the same resolution of 1920 x 1200 (with a few exceptions), and your pc gfx card or il2 wont know the difference between them smile smaller then 23' widescreen are usually 1650 x 1050 and can be used on a lower spec pc while still having reasonable viewing size in games.

for the 1920 x 1200 monitors, all your pc cares about is how many pixels it has to push, and that number is exactly the same in the monitor range from 23' to 28' (the pixels just get a little bigger in the larger monitors). just make sure your gfx card and cpu have enough grunt to run your games in good enough fps for the detail settings you use in the game. i find pixel size and screen size to be just about perfect for the normal viewing distance we sit at for lcd screens with this resolution, scenery in il2 looks great and absolutely no blockyness if you have a decent cpu/gpu.

il2 works fine for all widescreen monitors, all you have to do is edit the ini file correctly and it will play full screen

the 27' dell range are good quality monitors and rate fairly high in most reviews, better then many other lcd's from different brands in similar sizes (presuming you are looking for a higher end home/soho use monitor used for multiple tasks, gfx, video, office work, gaming etc..). "gaming monitors" are usually lower quality display panels (TN instead of PVA/MVA for ex) which are sold with the sales pitch they are super fast, but what they dont tell you is that their display quality is significantly lower (for ex 6 bit color instead of the full 8 bit, poor viewing angle, poor video quality etc). the better quality multi use monitors like the dell 27' are plenty fast for gaming, and monitor speed ceased to be an issue about 6 or 7 years ago in that regard.

if you get a dell 27', or similar quality/size monitor, make sure you take the time to calibrate it and set it up correctly, it makes a big difference (look at the anandtec review for general info). video, picture editing, gaming etc, looks absolutely stunning on this type of screen.

if you win the lotto you can go even better, and get a large professional grade flat screen monitor (IPS panels), but at 2x or 3x the price it just aint worth it for us humble humans with a smaller pocket book. technology evolves as well, in a few years the next gen monitors will be out with bigger and better displays at a similar price, so just choose the best bang per buck you can afford now, cant go wrong with something like the dell 27' range.

Be advised, we got zips in the wire

Rootango - thanx for the info - you're right, brand by itself doesn't mean much to me it's just that I think 27" is the right size for where my setup is, how close I sit etc. I think 30/32" would be awesome but too big for my space. Besides Dell I didn't find too many others of that size and I thought they had a pretty good rep. (PS - who makes a 28"?)

I recently got a 22" Dell 2209WA that uses an IPS panel at 1680x1050 and i can confirm it's fast enough for most kinds of games. Viewing angles and colours are superb, i've done some calibration by eye using the lcd calibration images found on www.lagom.nl and now i've got some realistic looking colours without it burning my retinas (it's too bright out of the box at 300cd brightness, i have it at 0% brightness).

The only case of image blurring is when constantly turning the camera around back and forth for a few seconds with TrackIR and it's barely noticeable, ie when you try to see how far you can go and not in normal gaming circumstances.

For someone with more cash to spend, i'd easily recommend any of the bigger Dell IPS monitors but first make sure you make some research on one particular factor that isn't mentioned a lot. Response times are fast enough for most monitors nowadays, but input lag is a different beast altogether.

The thing is, to reduce ghosting/image blur when fast moving images are displayed, some monitors have an image buffer. They load 1-2 frames into that buffer and run calculations on them, in order for the monitor to apply the correct voltages to the crystals before the frame needs to be actually diplayed. The idea is that if i start moving the crystals around between the frames earlier on, i won't have as much ghosting and it's sound in principle. Where it lacks is that in an online environment this will frustrate you to to end, as your monitor can be as much as 2 frames behind what's actually happening! Luckily, the Dell 2209WA has virtually zero input lag (it's been tested side by side with a CRT monitor on various websites, running a countdown timer on both of them while snapping pictures and seeing if it lags behind).

Bottom line is that anything with a response time around 5ms will be good enough for flight sims, so if you can get a non-TN panel go for it, just make sure the input lag is low. wink
