anybody have a 27" Dell by any chance?
yes i do, but i am not sure why the brand of monitor would matter to you when asking how good/bad this monitor is for il2 or general gaming use.
btw most lcd's between 23 and 28' are the same resolution of 1920 x 1200 (with a few exceptions), and your pc gfx card or il2 wont know the difference between them
smaller then 23' widescreen are usually 1650 x 1050 and can be used on a lower spec pc while still having reasonable viewing size in games.
for the 1920 x 1200 monitors, all your pc cares about is how many pixels it has to push, and that number is exactly the same in the monitor range from 23' to 28' (the pixels just get a little bigger in the larger monitors). just make sure your gfx card and cpu have enough grunt to run your games in good enough fps for the detail settings you use in the game. i find pixel size and screen size to be just about perfect for the normal viewing distance we sit at for lcd screens with this resolution, scenery in il2 looks great and absolutely no blockyness if you have a decent cpu/gpu.
il2 works fine for all widescreen monitors, all you have to do is edit the ini file correctly and it will play full screen
the 27' dell range are good quality monitors and rate fairly high in most reviews, better then many other lcd's from different brands in similar sizes (presuming you are looking for a higher end home/soho use monitor used for multiple tasks, gfx, video, office work, gaming etc..). "gaming monitors" are usually lower quality display panels (TN instead of PVA/MVA for ex) which are sold with the sales pitch they are super fast, but what they dont tell you is that their display quality is significantly lower (for ex 6 bit color instead of the full 8 bit, poor viewing angle, poor video quality etc). the better quality multi use monitors like the dell 27' are plenty fast for gaming, and monitor speed ceased to be an issue about 6 or 7 years ago in that regard.
if you get a dell 27', or similar quality/size monitor, make sure you take the time to calibrate it and set it up correctly, it makes a big difference (look at the anandtec review for general info). video, picture editing, gaming etc, looks absolutely stunning on this type of screen.
if you win the lotto you can go even better, and get a large professional grade flat screen monitor (IPS panels), but at 2x or 3x the price it just aint worth it for us humble humans with a smaller pocket book. technology evolves as well, in a few years the next gen monitors will be out with bigger and better displays at a similar price, so just choose the best bang per buck you can afford now, cant go wrong with something like the dell 27' range.
