Hi all

Just to confirm for others googling around: Win7 (64bit) does like FS9. In fact I just copied over the entire folder from my XP install to a system here at work running W7, and everything is there, even more complicated addons (Digital Aviation Cheyenne and Dornier) which read/write their own data files seem to work fine.

Only error is that you get a black screen in windowed mode, or when opening the ALT menu bar on top. But it works fully okay in fullscreen.

"Copied over"? What about all the registry entries FS9 and lots of addons write?

That's my entire Reg for FS9 and anything related:

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator\9.0]
"MP9Check"="3"
"Zone"="http://zone.msn.com/asp/fs04redir.asp"
"Version"="9.0"
"Launched"="1"
"PID"="74468-442-4327813-25398"
"DigitalProductID"=hex:
"EXE Path"="C:\\Games\\FS2004"
"CDPath"="D:\\"
"VersionType"="RetailVersion"
"InstalledGroup"="5"
"LangID"=dword:00000007

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator\9.0\ActiveCamera]
"FlyByActive"="1"
"FlyByDuration"="10"
"FlyByRelAltitude"="0"
"FlyByMinDistance"="50"
"FlyByCameraPlacement"="0"
"FlyByTravelling"="0"
"ApproachActive"="0"
"ApproachViewX"="25.000000"
"ApproachViewZ"="0.000000"
"ApproachViewY"="10.000000"
"ApproachTransAlt"="200.000000"
"InternalViewActive"="1"
"EnableWheelZoom"="1"
"UseMouseInSpot"="1"
"SmoothView"="1"
"ViewTurbRate"="0.600000"
"GroundTurbRate"="0.600000"
"BuffetTurbRate"="0.600000"
"RunningSpeed"="5.000000"
"SpotTurbRate"="0.250000"
"ViewTurbOn"="1"
"GroundTurbOn"="1"
"BuffetTurbOn"="1"
"SoundOn"="0"
"MaxTracks"="50"
"MaxTrackDistance"="15.000000"
"GroundTurbSoundOn"="0"
"ViewTurbSoundOn"="0"

As you can see Active Camera also got in there, but nothing else.

I'm using one Addon Scenery (Austria Pro), the DA planes, the Captainsim C-130 work, the Alphasim Typhoon works, everything else I have is freeware and writes no registry keys.

It's true that his has been reported as problem for some rare addons, but there's no problem in exporting/importing them. Mainly problems with the registry are supposed to be addon installers unable to find their place.

I'm not the first to discover this - you can backup and reinstall your FS9 to/from a Folder on a DVD or other media. I guess even if one addon acted up, you just reinstall that particular addon over the existing collection and it will redo the reg entries.

For me, my biggest concern were addons that write data directly to the program folder - which Win7 does discourage, all programs are supposed to be in /Programs and if they write data, it either goes to the user folder or to /ProgramData.

But that didn't seem a problem, the Digital Aviation Aircraft can still write their proprietary external data files.

It's also worth noting that the FS Recorder module has no problems writing the .trk recording files.

Of course, I can't promise there won't be any errors in the future, but the "copying over" to XP I have already tested a lot and haven't seen a problem yet. I don't think there should be some doing the same in W7.

FS9 runs maxed out on my Vista64 computer. Just thought i'd throw that out there.

Afterthought: If you are using online key-activated addons/downloads it might get more complicated. I don't - mine all come from disk.

Stormtropper, right niw my 5000+ AMD is the bottleneck wink but the Phneom II 955 should take care of the last remaining stutters and slow frames - everything high res and fully crowded autogen towns.

If I recall correctly you just need to disable "windows aero" to run in Window mode with FS9 and FSX. Handy for using multi-monitors (as in game on main and radio stack, GPS on secondary, etc)

Optimally would be to install FS on a HDD other than the OS drive thus avoiding the /program files altogether.

However, disabling UAC (or in the case of of Win7, dropping the slider down) should give you zero problems with anything you should install in system monitored folders

Ah okay, so the folder separation is part of the UAC? In my case, I always have my games in C:\Games anyway, for better overview, and I run them with admin rights.

I Don't think I'm getting Windows 7 anytime soon.

I heard that disabling/shutting off UAC (in Windows 7) only stops the prompts and you can never really turn this feature OFF like you can in VISTA. Another brilliant Idea by Microsoft.

Seems to cause a lot of problems with some 3rd party ad-ons that require validation checks through FS9 and FSX, including the new PMDG A/C.

How to Disable and Turn off UAC in Windows 7

Probably even more methods but I haven't researched around yet.

I've got Win7 Pro x64 RTM installed but I haven't had the energy to start the FSX migration process yet (ie been lazy). Probably do it the first of the week so will be happy to report any issue I have with 3rd party addons.

Rather I think it was the other way round - registry edit to disable UAC in Vista did disable the prompts, but not the underlying functionality.

Really, W7 is absolutely no hassle to work with. I tested both Vista and W7 for our coporate environment (and some games on W7 now), the difference between W7 and Vista is just plain amazing - in a positive way.
