I have an Nvidia GTX280 graphics card which normally runs all of my sims/games at less than 75 degrees and at idle is normally middle to high 50's.

I have noticed though that the graphics card was 91 degrees when I finished playing the RoF demo.
I had settings on full and the sim was nice and smooth however this temperature concerns me if I am going to buy this sim.

Could anyone tell me if this temperature is normal and is safe for running a flight sim and if anyone else has one of these graphics cards , what temperature does their copy of RoF run at.

Thanks..

Is your gpu fan running at 100%? Nvidia seem to set their stock fans to run at a constant 60% to keep the noise down, by cranking the fan to 100% you may be able to lower your load temps. A prolongued +90c sounds a bit high to me.

I you download Riva Tuner you can set your fan speed manually to see if it makes a difference. RT also lets you set automatic oC-fan speed profiles which is handy, its a bid fiddley to set up though, there's tutorials at some of the harware sites.

Have different options for fan speeds on motherboard.

Automatic
Intel QST
Legacy
Disable (fan runs at full speed)

Automatic ran at 85 degrees
Intel QST was 91.
Legacy was 90.
Haven't used Disabled yet. Will try it later today.

Thanks.

I'm guessing that intel program will control your CPU and case fans connected to your mobo, not your graphics card fan? The small difference in gpu temp is probably down to the increase in airflow in your case.

ROF doesn't heat up my 8800GTX much, never gets beyond 70c. Download Riva tuner, go to the customise button, low level system tweaks, and set your gfx card fan to 100% and see what happens.

Hi Davy,

I previously had a BFG GFX285OCX card in my PC and it ran at 85-90C within minutes. I think I had bad VRMs in that card as it even idled at 60-70C.

I since replaced it with an eVGA 295 and CPUID HWMonitor tells me the 2 GPUs are running at 56 and 58C idling; mid 70s - 80C playing ROF.

nVidia says their cards are rated to 105C - http://www.nvidia.com/object/product_geforce_gtx_280_us.html (specifications tab)
But check your manufacturer as well - BFG tech support email said never exceed 90C for my 285!

Another thing that worked for me was disabling the PhysX on my old 285...got me a few degrees, not sure why since ROF doesnt use PhysX. Again, I think my BFG card was whack!

I have used the eVGA Precision Tool for the fan control and I seem to have the temp down to 80 - 82 degrees running the fan at 100%.

Thanks for the help and advice lads. It is much appreciated.

My Evga 260 GTX runs no more than 63 C in ROF with fan at 100%

And I was worried about that LOL

Super cool! I might even turn that fan down if its too loud for you... you have alot of room to spare.

...guess I should have mentioned I am in California.

Ambient is 24-27C in the computer room depending on how many PCs are running.

If the noise from your card bothers you its possible to set fan speed to change dynamically, fan rpm increasing with temp. For some reason Nvidia don't do this out of the box for their cards, they seem to prefer punters to cook their nice new gpu's with the fans quietly idling.

There's an explanation of how it works at this link below, its not as simple as it could be but a few minutes head scratching and you'll get the idea.
