Haven't read the whole thread... but I note that you 'go to the gym' and then spend an hour on an exercise bike, alternating with weights. Have you considered getting a recumbent bike (or even a properly sized regular bike) and using it for the journey (or part of it) to the gym.

It might be tricky finding a bike that would tolerate more than 350lb rider weight on typical roads, but as your weight comes down I can say that a decent bike can carry a fairly substantial load in panniers. Might be something to consider further down the road, and it does depend on what journeys you need to make (when staying in Middletown, OH I was surprised by how casually people drive 'several hundred miles'). Most of the hops into town/to the cafe/local park etc, could have been done walking or biking rather than by car though.

While longer journeys are obviously much faster by car than bike (a "whole day" being needed for what would only take a few hours by car) it is less obvious when considering travel within a town - alternative routes, & a more consistent pace can reduce the difference in journey times considerably.

Cycling is also one area where excessive weight isn't necessarily a dramatic penalty - using lower gearing your leg's weight will turn the pedals and you only have to raise the 'trailing leg' - it is also great for reducing oedema and fluid retention in the lower extremities as it is a non-load-bearing activity.

Howdy,

I haven't read the full thread so my question may, or may not, have been answered and hopefully nobody will think I'm a pest or too blunt but here it comes anyway:
Why hitting 412 lbs got you worried? Personally, I would have gotten terribly worried much earlier.
No?

Well-done anyway Moses. Support, support.

Cheers,
Slug

great job Moses, been trying to lose weight myself and once you have to go down a size or two and people start commenting on how they've noticed it's really motivating!

Dude, that's great!

Where did this thread come from? Nice going, Moses!

Some time ago you posted a video of your Camaro aftermarket exhaust and there was a glimpse of you in the video, IIRC. I remember thinking, "That's a pretty big fella." smile

Good to hear you're conquering that weight man, potentially extending your life one pound (or inch of waist) at a time!

cheers

Keep it up Mo! January this year I topped out at 298. Today I'm down to 236. Hope to be down to 180 by the end of the year.

Outstanding job, all of you! cheers

531 Ghost, I peaked in 2008 (age 40) somewhere around 270 lbs. (122.5 kg). The most I remember seeing on a scale was just under 265 lbs. but I stopped looking. By the time I saw a doctor (which turned into an emergency EKG and BP pill popping) I had already lost a little weight due to having difficulty chewing (was also in desperate need of dental care). The whole thing was just messed up.

My lowest weight was 180 lbs. in 2009 (took me a little over a year) so I count from 260 lbs. (my highest known weight) to 180 lbs. (80 lbs. lost). Now I seem stuck at around 200 lbs. (90.7 kg), varying in the low-to-high 190's, sometimes breaking out of them at both ends, but it doesn't last. So I know the difference between 270 lbs. and 180 lbs. (5'-9" [175.3 cm]) and holy crap, it a is such a difference (even much more than you're feeling right now, which is already a huge improvement)! You'll have the extra zing in your step for feeling so much lighter on your feet, you'll pop out of bed in the morning like there's a spring attached to your ass as you strut to the john, snap your fingers, point down and say, "Dayum, check this out!" biggrin Or, maybe not (depending on your maturity level) but you'll feel like saying it.

Oh man, if you run, it actually becomes enjoyable when you're that light on your feet. You can't help yourself, even if you only intend to walk, you end up running because it feels good at that point.

Oh, and I don't know about you all, but even before I started working on upper body, my calves were rock hard and strong (from toting so much weight around all those years). You get to keep the chiseled calves. smile

Apologies, Ghost. I forgot you were the Marine that once weighed in at only 150 lbs.(68 kg) so you know how good it feels to be so light on your feet much more than I do!

We're finally getting to the last of the unpacking that we've put off for years (motivated by wanting to see my previous blood work over the years and gnarly foot x-ray), if I find something interesting I'll post it on the Diet and Fitness thread.

You've hit a homeostasis plateau, where your body is square between starvation mode (turning everything it can to fat to protect against what it thinks is happening) and building mode (where it's turning everything to muscle, as there's a demand for it and plenty of food).

Just keep doing what you're doing and you'll be shocked when the fall comes, and with it a different plateau. Our bodies are pretty well designed, trying to even out the highs and lows of exercise and diet and avoid sudden swings.

I'm really proud that you've done so much towards your health. We kinda like you and want you to hang around a bit longer.

Thanks, Dart. smile

I know you're right, I just have to "weight" it out. I had weight/size goals for turning 50 and it's not likely I'll meet them now. I'm not trying anything drastic to get there, I'll just keep on doing what I'm doing.

That's great! I'm dealing with the struggle too, but for the first time in my life I'm enjoying it.
I was reading your older posts some. Just showing up that first time at the gym was pretty nerve racking. I'm a quiet person and just want to do my thing, not socialize. Turns out everyone else there is pretty much the same, and the Y isn't crowded at all.
I used to love riding my bike, but now, it's just painful.
Not to mention riding around here is miserable in the heat and not very safe lately.
I found I really enjoy the recumbent stationary bike. Far more comfortable and also works more muscles. I start every workout on it for 45 minutes. If I don't have time to do the other machines after, I'll do 60.
I'm not watching the miles though, I'm just staying at 150bps on the heart rate monitor after a few minutes of warmup. Then I adjust the level.

I wish I was seeing results like on the tv shows, but then I'm not trying to kill myself in the process and then fall back into bad habits. After being disappointed watching my weight too closely, I decided to weigh in every 4 weeks. Then I'll weigh twice about 12 hrs apart and take an average.
That went well on my weigh in a couple of weeks ago and left me feeling pretty good and motivated, seeing just under 8 lbs. I would suggest considering spreading out your weigh ins. Other than that, I'm still learning and figuring out meals and new machines/exercises, but it's not bad.

Keep it up!

*I'm also trying out fasting before workouts and eating after for a window of a few hours. I can't eat late anyway with my stomach issues. We'll see how that goes. I'm not fasting every day, just eating smart on the off days and basically just going with an empty stomach to workouts.

Vienna, 2nd rock left.
You guys are a an inspiration.

I'm going into stubborn mode the next two weeks (until my Bday) as I've hit the damn 80kg again. Summer is difficult, as I find that socializing in the evenings usually means food everywhere...
