Those are some pretty lofty expectations there. I have no doubt that Avatar will be good but I usually try to keep modest expectations when I go see a new film. I just hate ending up being disappointed!

When I went to go see the latest Star Trek movie I had to force myself to have modest expectations even though I was very excited to see it.

I dunno... this looked like a total meh fest. Was hoping for something more alien than tall blue cat people.

Has there been a glut of those lately that I've missed?

The scenes from the trailer that took place on the planet, and some on the ship, had a very CG feel to me, almost "Final Fantasy" looking. Kinda disappointing to me.

I'll reserve my judgment on the film until I see it opening weekend. My take on this issue is that you just never know. A lot of people and critics alike were saying that there was "no audience" for District 9 but they were all proved wrong.

Interesting blurb here from IMDB,

James Cameron Previews “Avatar”
22 August 2009 9:35 AM, PDT

Audiences attending worldwide screenings of a 16-minute preview of James Cameron’s Avatar applauded enthusiastically Friday night. The reaction was in stark contrast to the mixed reaction that a two-minute trailer received when it was posted online a day earlier. A common reaction then was that the movie looked more like a videogame than a movie and such being the case, “I’d rather play it than watch it,” in the words of one online viewer. The trailer has been posted on numerous websites, including the movie’s “official” site. »

ditto!

Avatar is definitely a film I would like to see initially at an IMAX theater. Release date says to be 18 December for Chicagoland.

"Avatar: An IMAX 3D Experience will be digitally re-mastered into the unparalleled image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience® through proprietary IMAX DMR® technology. With crystal clear images, laser-aligned digital sound and maximized filed of view, IMAX provides the world's most immersive movie experience."
