Thanks for that, dutch. I have never tried overclocking and probably never will. Not willing to risk it nor buy a custom cooling solution.

I am curious if you find that 1 Gb video card is providing much of a difference. With my 512 Mb card I have, I can almost max everything out and post-effects and not hit above 100% video card memory usage as indicated by the settings editor in RoF.

My impression is that RoF is much more CPU limited than GPU limited.

I get decent performance in smackdown with my dual 3.2ghz E8500. Apart from loading pauses at the start I get smooth very playable fps. I'm not sure what matters more for ROF in mid range cpu's high mhz or quad core.

From Riva Tuners logging page ROF seems to be using all 768mb of my video memory event though with landscape set to medium, the setup page says 31%. In free flight ROF uses between 80-90% of my dual core E8500 at stock 3.2ghz, smackdown has my cpu usage at max. I have noted that all the logging takes quite a bit of cpu power, ROF runs much worse with Riva Tuner logging active.

I'd be interested to know if anyone's seeing less than 100% CPU usage in the smackdown mission, I suspect not even with the top level quad I7's.

I would, too. I disabled my onboard sound, and I haven't gotten the wierd sound distortion even when the stuttering starts, which seems MUCH less since the last patch, but it's still there. This Pentium 945 just barely cuts it.

Foucault, You can do OC using Clockgen it will not harm you if you only use it for playing RoF do on beforehand a stab. test to determine how far you can go in Ghz. You can use Prime/3dmark etc for this. Max CPU temperature can be fund on AMD website.

You are right RoF is not that high performer when it becomes to graphics, (ever seen Killzone2 on PS3 and you know what I mean inhere). According to a RoF member, the game is designed for Quadcore systems, so your impression CPU is much more limiting the game then the GPU is right, when you have only a duocore CPU.

I'm running 4Gb RAM and a SapphireX HD4890-1Gb I have no complains regarding the graphics for the OFF3 and RoF game.

BTW what brand video card do you have, because the big Dimension cooler house can block the Video card.

Thanks for the info. I may give it a try if I feel brave. BTW, video card brand is VisionTek. Speaking of blocking, the size of my case is an issue as well. I can't fit a large video card in the case length-wise.

I know, and you can not install a non stock Cooler because it is a BTX case. Some guys who using the Dell cooler just cut out the black cooler casing at the bottum to make room.
You can watch some Dell E521 modification at Computerwine blog see:

Dell Dimension E521
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ OC to 3.5ghz

RAM 4Gb Crucial Ballistix
GPU Sapphire HD4890 VaporX
PSU Corsair TX750W

Just a heads up, NewEgg has the Nvidia 9600GSO (96 stream processors) for 39.99 (after a 20.00 mail in rebate) I have installed two of these and they work great with Rise of Flight. One went into a buddies AMD 5000+ (Early dual core, Dell E521) and is smooth as butter all on high (except the ground I think, that is at medium) and into my Simpit on a Quad Core 6600 and this flies it all high (even the ground). If you need a decent video card cheap, this one works. I have not come across the stuttering problem with either computer, nor on my Core i7.

Edit: Price is 34.99 right now on sale.

Not to be ungrateful but I seriously doubt that adding a 30 dollar video card will improve my performance considering that the Radeon HD 4850, which is still selling for over 100 dollars, has 800 processing units to the 9600's 96 processors. The 4850 has a higher memory clock and core clock than the 9600. So you'll forgive me if I think I better served by the 4850. If neoqb can't program for an ATI card, that ain't my problem. I'm glad your friend's system runs smooth as butter, but mine does not and an inferior video card is not going to fix that.
