Recently LucasArts released "The Secret Of Monkey Island: Special Edition".
It's a complete top-to-bottom remake of their DOS classic graphicadventure:
hand-drawn graphics, orchestral score, digital sound fx, professional voice actors -- the works!

But, despite all of these changes, the game remains an absolutely faithful frame-for-frame faithful reproduction of the DOS original.
In fact, you can switch back & forth between the DOS original version & the DOS upgrade version with just a click.
Now people are already screaming for similar DOS upgrade treatments to other LucasArts favorites like "LOOM" & "TIE Fighter", to name a couple.

Naturally, this got me ta thinkin' ....
What if LucasArts did the DOS upgrade with --
... wait for it ....

"Their Finest Hour"

I go with TFH moreso against the other beloved classic "Secret Weapons Of The Luftwaffe" 'cause LucasArts can always say,
"Well, we already gave you a "Secret Weapons Of The Luftwaffe" DOS upgrade -- it's called "Secret Weapons Over Normandy".
And they kinda/sorta would have a point. lol

But at the same time, a DOS upgrade of TFH might clash with Maddox Games's "Storm Of War: The Battle Of Britain".

I dunno ....
I just wanna see TFH get the DOS upgrade treatment which seems to be the trend over at LucasArts right now.
Your thoughts, gentlemen?

Oh man... That would be awesome! I don't even care if the redone SWOTL still used the 2d sprites, but just at greater resolution and color bit!

I would definitely be for the Tie Fighter/XWing series classic stuff right there.

Yes! And true for many classics - inclduing great low resolution sims of even more recent vintage such as EF2000 that are unlikely ever to be succeeded by brand new ones of greater quality.

I've often wondered what technically stands in the way of changing nothing but an increase in resolution to more modern standards. The textures and other graphics that have been modified for sims such as EECH are simply amazing. Those modders have access to the original source code for EECH.

If that access is a necessity for increases in resolution, I wonder whether any of the license holders would permit limited code access solely for resolution increase modding, whether for no profit or for a fee? TF/XW, SWOTL, TFH...so many classics!

Yep yep -- that's my outlook precisely: change not one iota of gameplay -- just upgrade the graphics/music/sound effects.

The reason I picked "Their Finest Hour" for the upgrade's 'cause I just saw the movie
"The Battle Of Britain" and I have that on the brain. lol
Plus, of course, it's yet another Larry Holland masterpiece.

I presume the rationale for not releasing the source code for these classics is that the corporation believes the intellectual property might be profitable some day, whether as a basis for a new sim, or for a re-release. If that is the case, do they virtually all find that to just upgrade the "wrappings" of the classic (graphics resolution at a minimum, possibly sound. XP compatibility? Or just let dos box handle) would cost far more than the sales of the re-release would bring in?
