I built a new rig a while back, and I have everything for JF18 reinstalled and back up to speed on my new system. I have my desktop and my game resolution set to 1920x1200. It looks great and I can get the game to run just fine, but at the end of every mission my game CTD's after I hit yes to end the mission. Instead of going to the debriefing screen, the game window shrinks down to about ¼ the normal size and It looks as if it’s trying to go into windowed mode and then it CTD’s. After it crashes I get an error message that says, "There is an error allocating surface". Has anyone ever seen this before? Do any of you have an idea what my problem might be? I hope someone can help because it’s very frustrating not being able to get back into the debriefing screen after the mission.

System Specs:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8600 E0 Wolfdale 3.33GHz
RAM: Corsair Dominator 4GB
GPU: 2x Sapphire 100251SR Radeon HD 4870 X2's CrossFireX
OS: Windows XP SP3

I give up! I've been trying to fix this for a week straight, and still no joy. I guess this sim is just too old and to buggy to run on my new computer. It sure is frustrating to have run a perfect mission, just to get back to the boat and hit yes to end the mission only to wind up back at desktop every time. I guess it’s' time to move on, it was fun while it lasted though.

So I figured I give it one last shot before I give up on this sim for good. I tried just about everything you could name, but just before I threw in the towel, I thought, maybe JF18 doesn’t like my duel core CPU. So I set the priority to low and changed my affinity to core 1 instead of core 0 and waddaya know, that fixed it. It turns out that JF18 is real picky about the core that you run it on. Now I can go to the debriefing screen and tally up all my kills at the end of the mission. Yippieeee!

Hi this could be the rez you set in the TSH Manager, did you set it to the same rez as your Desktop?? like so, this is on TSH v3:

I always match the desktop to the res. that I use. For a while there I thought that running at 1920x1200 with duel 4870X2’s was just too much for the game, so I tried lowering the res. all the way down to 640x480 and every res in between and it still CTD’ed. I was at my wits end. Thankfully I thought to check the CPU affinity, and sure enough, that was the problem.

Slikk,

Interesting. I never had to restrict affinity on my Dual Core system. From the symptoms,
I believe you are suffering from Bloated Pilot Syndrome. Try flying a different pilot if you are only flying single ship. If you have multiple wingmen, they could be the source of the bloat. Look in your Resource/Pilots folder (I may have that wrong, but you will find it). Generally the file should only be <100K or so, but sometimes the pilot file gets corrupted and grows to > 1MB. Delete this (these) file(s).

It may have been coincidence if you flew a different pilot after restricting the affinity.

F/A-18 won't use the two cores anyway, so the affinity fix won't hurt anything.

I also have two cores and don't suffer from this crash. It does sound like a bloated pilot file.

The symptoms that you were having sounded very similar to my problem so I checked my pilot’s folder and my pilot file was only 43.0 kb. I also checked all of the other pilots in that folder just to see if it might be one of them causing this. The largest file in the whole folder was 43.8 kb so I guess I was having some other weird problem. This sure is one temperamental sim. It can be like walking on egg shells. One wrong move and wham! CTD. Whatever the problem was, I’m just glad that changing my affinity fixed it. I sure didn’t want to give up on this sim.

Been years since I posted here. Just reloaded JFA-18 again and trying to relearn how to fly this thing, but it's running well (Dual core too). I do remember having the "allocating surface" problem back when and it was always the pilot for me too. Usually the one named "Smoke" and he was near or above 1 meg. Ought to be able to search this site and find out if anyone had any other sources for that problem. I'm expecting TSH V4 to be as solid as JFA-18 always was. I used feel that F4 was buggy, but they've got really solid versions of that. I just need some carrier ops to sooth my soul.

Hey Recluse - just spent some timme going thru my acrchives to find all your training missions. They're reloaded so maybe I can get back in the groove.

later
