So thanks to WWBrian I am now able to host multiplayer games, the problem is that my experience is not that of other players on my server, i'm getting a very nice slide show.

I realise my cpu is taking a big hit with the extra work i'm asking it to do, has anybody found settings that should make this better?

Specs:

E6750 CPU @ 3.2GHz
8800 GTX
4 gig PC6400 DDR2 RAM
650 PSW
XP SP3

Hi Vapour,

These are my initial findings so far, TX-EcoDragon could probably correct any errors and give you better info on this as he's had more time dealing with it but...

Some things to consider:

- All AI aircraft are all processed on the host machine.
- Clents simply process their own physics.

- More AI in a mission requires substantially more bandwidth needed to send to each player

- 7 players on a 20-man no AI server took less than 1MB upstream BW
- 18 players on the same 20 player no AI server took 3-4MB upstream bandwidth

- 2 players and 14 AI (16 player mission) also took 1-2MB upstream

- downstream is relativly small (clients send you little data comparativly speaking)

So a fat upload pipe is better for hosting, download speeds are not as big an issue.

...but I see you have a CoreDuo, which is near the bottom edge of the minimum requirements. I wouldn't expect a whole lot in the hosting arena Vapour, sorry to have to say.

Start by grabbing missions with lower player limits, 5v5s for example. If they are smooth with all AI except you ( heaviest CPU load) then try the 6v6s. Find how many slots it takes to bring your CPU to its knees, then back off until its smooth and create/download mission with similar player numbers. Remember to give yourself enough CPU overhead to allow for communicating with your NIC.

[edit:] Ha! suprised I didnt scare the chit outa everyone here! All my MB upstream comments mistakenly said GB!!! dizzy duh

I have been considering an upgrade to a quad core cpu anyway, the problem is my upload speed, it's nowhere near those speeds, i'm getting 0.35 mbps on average. On the AI intensive maps people were losing connection, this is more than likely my connection being overloaded. But the fps issue is more than likely cpu related. The cpu issue I can address, unfortunately the connection speed is out of my hands.
