If you bothered to read the news on the SimHQ front page, you would know that Battlefront has released upgrades (5 bucks each) to their CMBB and CCAK classic games... these upgrades allow the games to run in Vista... I for one am very happy about this, since I consider the Combat Mission series some of the greatest PC games ever made (JMO)...

So anyway, I downloaded the demo's (yes, they have new demo's with the new Vista compatible upgrades) to see if they work before I purchase the upgrades... and yes, they work...can't wait to get back into my once favorite series...

Here's some screens from the 2 demo's... 1600x1200x32...sweet... (do wish widescreen, 1920x1200x32 worked thou.)

I wish Shock Force was half as good as these old, great games. I'll have to put the upgrades on my (already too long) list of games to buy.

Wow, sorry for not reading the thread and just looking at the pictures. I figured it was just a dream that they'd ever get the games to run in Vista.

On that note: Oh god what have they done, now I am going to go back to playing these games and probably spend more time messing around with mods and visuals instead of playing the game!

When I apply the Vista patch to a fresh install of CMBB it only allows me to play three Battles, and there are no Operations. Weird.

Everything seems to be working well graphically, at least. Just don't know why it only lets me play 3 out of 169 scenarios.

Also, using the Vista patch installs their eLicense DRM, which would be fine if it wasn't for the fact that about five minutes after I close out of the game my anti-virus flips out.

Did you 'apply' the demo, or actually purchase and download the 'full-update' which is $5.

I purchased the patch and applied it to a fresh install of CMBB.

I checked the missions list before I applied the patch and all 100+ missions were there, then as soon as I put in the Vista patch and start the game up only three missions show up.

This series is one of the most underrated strategy games ever. The concept still is excellent and it's a great series. That the graphics are dated now - I don't really care, they are efficient and that is good enough.

I don't think that there are many wargamers that underrate the CM series.

That is a peculiar notion- and wargames before then were never known to have purdy graphics and sounds, they were abstract 2-D hex/grid maps. It was the wargame-lite Panzer General (without any coherent sense of scale or organization) that succeeded to pave way into a broader market- since then popular wargames are typically of the RTS clickfests, but Combat Mission even today is prettier than 'hardcore' turn-based two dimensional counters and map symbols.

This is probably the finest WarGame ever produced for the PC. IMO its the AdvancedSquadLeader (ASL) of the computer world. Its a game that takes an intense amount of time to play well. Look it at a computerized board game. Truly an amazing piece of work. The amount of time I have put into playing CMAK and CMBB against a coworker of mine is mindnumbing at this point. I believe that the majority of (board) wargamers are much more "hardcore" than the majority of PC gamers. This is a game that even they gove props to.

Don't let the graphics fool you - there is a whole lot under the hood...
