TK has included a very complete Manual in Wings Over Vietnam that covers everything. And like the Bing ads, "everything" is a little bit too much at first.
We include a layout of the keyboard commands in the stock game for visual learners. But there are several commands that we "program" into the Commands so that everything works. Most is done for you...like the Thrust Vectoring key (UPARROW and DOWNARROW) which is used for refueling, flying helicopters and thrust reversers when you land many of the transports. Most of the Photo Recce Mod is done but there is one step you must do also and that is explained in the DIRECTIONS.
YAP is story-based and since I write the stories, they are biased towards the commands I commonly use. So aside from G (for Gear), F (for Flaps) on the keyboard, I program the joystick to have an airbrake button I also program a joystick button to click off and on the Cockpit view so I can see without obstruction to land on a carrier.
I padlock my view on whatever is on my mind. If I am flying formation, I padlock on Lead. Refueling, sometimes on the tanker. A2G on the target. A2A on the enemy fighter. Landing on a carrier, on the Ball. I keep the little screen "dots" small and rely upon the padlock to point my eyes at the target. I find this looks so much more real and provides the disadvantages of reality very well. For instance, in some of my favorite missions, you are bombing a tree line in a fast mover. That's what you did.
And I use Shift-R often. That puts whoever is spoke last in memory...like a "hold down" in a fighter of that era. So when Zebra (the name we usually reserve for tankers) speaks, you can know where he is even without radar.
I keep a weapons select button handy on the stick so I can switch ordnance in A2G or A2A.
Know what F12 does when you want to snoop around. Use M (for Map) to see where you are and where everyone else is. Is that cheating? We don't have Red Crown so this is the next best thing.
Those will get you going. Then you will come up with your own formula and shortcuts.
We include a stick layout for a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro and a Saitek X52 but once you get into this, you will modify them.
If you hit a wall (figuratively speaking), email. One of us will answer very soon.
