Andy. I haven't lived there for a long time and don't know what it's like at present but Calgary {and Alberta in general} has the reputation of being somewhat lacking in cosmopolitan qualities, maybe it's different now though. Filipinos in Canada aren't hated exactly, but maybe due to the fact that they're not as "politically noisy" as other groups they seem to get shortchanged a lot.

Crane Hunter,
So this might be an issue for her if we moved to Calgary do you think? Possibly a little bit. I'm from the same city as Crane, and know what he says about Filipinos does happen. Not to all of them, and maybe not all of this is all that serious, but yea, it does appear and actually happen. My best friend is from the Philippines, and he is prospering... but that may have more to do with his Chinese heritage, in a local community of Chinese expats who are doing a lot of exports. This is the same situation as another Filipino family I used to know who also had Chinese bloodlines. And yet, those who look more indigenous Filipino seem to end up in building cleaning jobs, or auto-body shops, or working for a Filipino dominated small/medium business. Does this mean your wife will encounter big problems in the job market? yea, DUE TO THE ECONOMY mostly, but she may find a little resistance here and there for great jobs. I should point out though that Canada is made up of people from everywhere else, and is increasingly tolerant of people different from one another, so if she encounters any real problems, she'll likely find solutions or an improvement soon after. Just keep applying until the workplace "feels right".

Rick,
Thanks for the advice.
Ironically, Joy is half Chinese, but to look at her, you would say she was full Chinese. Perhpas she won't have an issue?
If you are in Calgary, are you able to comment on availability of IT work, and the attitude toward the British?
Thanks
Andy.

FishTaco,
The IT industry is kind of slow right now. Oil & Gas is big here but most of them are not in hiring mode right now. Discrimination is pretty non-existing here, expecially for the high tech industry.

mucat,
Thanks for the heads up. I was looking at moving around August 2010.
Might still keep the United States on the cards then; I know there is work available there.
Thanks
Andy.

Perhaps Filipinos end up with the cleaning jobs because nobody wants them (the jobs) and Filipinos aren't picky about what job they do so long as it pays the rent and puts food on the table?

Ice, One of my best friends is Filipino (FT would love Rey, he has *LOTS* of guns) He came over here with nothing but his family, and worked himself into a $100K a year job managing one of the prestigious Country Clubs here in Dallas. His kids are all very successful as well.
At our church, we have several Filipino families. What I have learned about them is that they are VERY close as a family unit. They run a nursing home, and do quite well.
