You also need a CRT monitor that's capable of 120Hz (or at least 100Hz) at the desired resolution. And the video card must be 7 series or older. The 8800 series marks Nvidia departure from free S3D support for XP thought later on was hacked by gamers to also become compatible with S3D by modifying some registry entries. You can find out more about how to make these changes by visiting the mtbs3d.com forum. Later GPU architectures from 9800 on out are completely incompatible with XP S3D.

The S3D quality of such XP setup was enchanting by itself. Enough to keep me addicted forever if it was to never evolved into 3DVision. Comparative speaking, the S3D effect of XP setup is not drastically different from 3DVision setup since depth was the main attraction and it has that in abundance. However, side effects such as ghosting due to CRT phosphor residue luminance can be distracting at first, and with lower refresh frequency, ie less120Hz, will cause flickering which can be both distracting and eye straining with prolong usage. Both of these side effects are completely absent from using DLP TV with 3DVision. The much larger size of the DLP of course will increase the immersion factor compare to the usual 22 or 24" CRT.

Another option is to have dual boot with XP and Vista with a 3DVision setup if you want to keep XP running for all other apps.

Okay, thanks a lot for all the information. I'll check out mtbs3d.com. I have an old Sony CRT that goes up to 160 hz.

It sounds like it might be best for me to hold off until I'm ready for Windows 7 and a HDTV but I'm going to check out, for now, what I could do with some old hardware.
