Online multiplayer competitive games are always tough, with deathmatch style being the toughest. There is no way a noob can enter a free for all deathmatch game of any kind and expect to last very long. The only solution would be to implement some kind of league system where pilots who dominate are bumped up to a server with tougher opponents. likewise if you are taking a beating you have the option to join a server that has opponents with skills more inline with yours.

Indeed, and right now RoF is in it's infancy and has next to no options for online play.

Give it more time to mature a little.

Hedgehog, you are in the presence of the Gods of WWI and the best and all knowing online players on the planet, its moon and at least one nearby asteroid.

They have decided to champion ROF and will smite any real or percieved detractors even while knowing absolutely nothing about said detractors.

They will automatically conclude that anyone with problems or issues with ROF and its lack of many things most mortal flightsim gamers expect, is somehow less than they are.

You entered a server that was poorly conceived and constructed, and by your own admission you didn't even know how to operate your craft, then you get shot down by a player with a (much) higher skill level than yours, and you have the nerve to condemn the entire online experience?

I was strollin' down memory lane and found some notes from May/99 concerning the "Hogpen", an extremely disreputable pub where nere do well fighter pilots and overconfident bomber pilots hung out waiting for B17 II or whatever they ended up calling that other game that was supposed to have absolutely amazing online play.

Sorry, no. While I did have and fly B-17 II and more than likely whatever other sim you're referring to, I was involved in an online squadron in another sim in 1999.
