Just to settle a debate, do you have to be an American citizen to join the U.S. armed forces?

No. Foreign nationals are allowed to serve in the US military. Most do it as a path to citizenship.

Correction - enlisted men can serve without citizenship. Officers can not.

When I went into the Army back in 1972, there were a whole bunch of Puerto Ricans running around giving the drill sergeants fits with "No comprende, no comprende".

On the other hand, many PR and Phillipino soldiers and marines were great warriors.

Must possess a green card (be a resident alien) and usually there's a few more hoops to jump through after that. Then usually after serving 1 1/2 years active duty (IIRC), can become a U.S. Citizen.

Some Canadians served in Vietnam. How did they get in the U.S. forces without a green card? Apparently some Canadians served in the Civil War too on the side of the Union.

I know that some served as part of exchange programs where forces trade for the experience of how another country conducts operations. This can happen in wartime.

When you can show some green cash you can get anything done.

Hmm, that doesn't seem like quite a fair exchange back in the days of Vietnam. Canadian gets to go to the crapper and the American gets a nice holiday in Canada. wink

I remember meeting an Englishman at reception battalion with an accent so thick, I could hardly understand him!
