Used the search function and didn't see anything, forgive me if I've missed it.

I'm looking for scope ranging (where the bullet hits at various ranges) info for all the sniper rifles in the game (and the M16 ACOG), as well as some info on the rifle itself (pros, cons, etc.), something along the lines of this: "The Arma M24 sniper" ( http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=2255106&page=1#Post2255106 ).

I'm also interested in sniper ranges and training maps, I've heard there were some good ones for ArmA but haven't found anything for the sequel.

Some info on mil dots:

A fairly detailed writeup on mil dots: ( http://www.alpharubicon.com/leo/mildot.htm )
Shooter Ready - Training course and long range shooting simulation: ( http://www.shooterready.com/mildot.html )

Thanks.

The RCO (Rifle Combat Optic) is unfortunately a bastardized version of the real thing, lacking the correct reticle for the RCO and instead using a stripped down version of the TA01NSN crosshair (no range marks, no nightime illumination. The ranging stadia, however, do appear to be properly calibrated on the M16A4 (there is no M4 with an ACOG in the demo, so I haven't checked that).

As you can see, the center crosshair is calibrated to 100m, followed by 200m, 300m, 400m and 500m stadia lines below. The top of the thicker crosshair is 600m. The width of each stadia line (or the width of the thicker vertical crosshair in the case of 600m) corresponds to 19 inches (average width of human shoulders) for the given range. This seems to pretty much work in-game, although the width at 100m is a little off.

Now if we had the proper RCO reticle, this would be immensely useful:

http://chemicaldragon.com/yahoo_site_admin/assets/docs/TA31F_ACOG_TRAINING.344110115.ppt

After a little more experimentation in more controlled circumstances in the demo, I observed two things:

1. The distance between the thick horizontal center crosshairs should be the width of the shoulders at 50m, but this also seems a bit off (sight or the size of an ArmA man, I don't know).

2. I'm beginning to suspect that the reticle is calibrated for the M4 rather than the M16 (as the TA01NSN is in real life). At 500m and 600m the shots seem to group a bit high, but would probably be right on for the M4 (if the difference in velocity is actually taken into account). Maybe someone with the full game can check.

i3lueHorneT, I noticed you posted this on several other forums. If you find anything conclusive or do some testing yourself please update us here. I have some ideas for a series of two-player sniper/spotter missions to take advantage of the new ghillie suits, they would really benefit from having some accurate ranging info tucked away in the notes.

I just did a bit of testing on this tonight.

From what I can tell, the range cards that were produced in that old thread are still accurate. For the .50cal especially, the old range cards seem to be perfect.

For the bolt-action rifles, they seem to match the cards too, but there is a catch. In ArmA2 the bolt-action rifles only have one level of magnification, and it's the shallow magnification that existed on the rifles in ArmA1. The cards made there are for the far magnification (the "biggest zoom").

So perhaps someone who knows more than I do can do some math that will convert the numbers over, or else we will have to make a card for the new scopes.

I did not test beyond 800m because with the reduced magnification and scope wobble, you're either much better than I am or very lucky to hit anything that far out with your first shot.

I have not tested the M107 or DMR exhaustively. I can say that the M107 is different from the ArmA1 range card. It seems to be zeroed closer to 450m and has a different magnification (a man at 400m is closer to 5mils than 5.5). It will need a new table produced.

The few tests I did with the DMR were interesting, because its round seems to drop less than the M40/M24. At 400m I only had to elevate about 1mil compared to the M40's 1.5. It's balanced by not having as great a magnification, although in semi-auto and with a 20 round magazine, it's quite a beast. I'm hesitant to test this one now because I wouldn't be surprised if some drop was added in a future patch, considering it fires the same round as the M40/M24.

Hope this helps.

BTW, my method for the elevation mils is different from the one in that other thread. The upper chest shots used to test in the old thread do not seem to guarantee a kill with the 7.62mm beyond 500m or so, at least on the U.S. crewman that I was using to test with. So my numbers are for headshots.

Here's some scans from the RCO manual...

There are two versions of the RCO...one for the 16" barrel (M4) and one for the 20" (M16)

Hope that helps
