Although to be fair to myself I already know about powering USB ports and the 500mA limitation, hardware chap. Those IR LEDs must be cranking out a few milliamps <dons shades> No not really
A powered USB hub should be ok too to fulfil the power requirement, but I like to keep vital kit as close to the motherboard as possible
Perhaps a USB mouse slot (one normally in use for the mouse I mean) could swap with TIR's connection for testing if one has only limited USB ports, you'd soon notice if that caused problems for the mouse and could try something else: whereas flaky TIR operation (sometimes not working properly, usually when someone's on your tail) might be difficult to track down
