Bones, man did that strike an old chord. Yep,I remember using a pair of nail clippers to cut that notch. I felt so "I know a secret" about that.
Anybody else use EDD - Essential Data Duplicator to copy discs ? Having to tune the two 5 1/4 drives to get a speed that hit the sweet spot for copying ?

5 1/4" FD's being the norm at the time. I remember the computer lab in high school having TRS80 Model IIs, with their 8" floppies. IIRC they had 64K RAM, monochrome monitors, and all 16 of them were hooked up to 1 printer through a multiplexer. When you wanted to print you had to ask if anyone else was printing, then walk to the multiplexer and turn the dial to your station number, then walk back to your station and type "print." That was back when a single-density 5.25" floppy held 90K of data, a double-density was 180K, and Atari had their weird "dual-density" format that held 127K. One of the funnier things I remember doing in my TRS80 CoCo/Atari days was copying a program from a friend's CoCo onto cassette and never being able to get it to load on my computer. A bit of investigation found that I'd neglected to wind the tape past the leader before copying LOL Computer tapes didn't have leaders but cost more and only had 10 or 20 minutes of storage time, so we all used regular audio tapes with leaders. Anyone remember Atari's "player/missile" graphics, or Commodore's "sprite?" Or converting from hexadecimal to decimal?

I used to put tape over the hole which made the floppy recordable, otherwise it wouldn't save whatever it was you were trying to put on it. I think it was the other way around. You're talking about 5.25", right?

The tape thing was 5.25 but I don't remember what it did. I remember making boot disks for specific games too, but I doubt I could do it now. I can only remember a few dos commands from way back when. I think it was around Dos 6.1.

I remember making boot disks for specific games too, Same here. I remember making a boot disk that would automatically use memmaker to optimize memory use so I could play certain games.

Early in the learning curve I had to use separate bootdisks too, but after hacking for a while I learnt how to build menus into the autoexec/config so you could have multiple configurations (with or without mscdex, with or without EMM386, etc) from the same boot disk. That saved a heck of a lot of time.

I can still to this day set up the perfect autoexec.bat and config.sys file depending on what you need. Ah the joys of memmaker. Odd how running it in the same situation might give you better results at times!

All of this talking got me to install a bunch of old sims on my WinXP box using DOSBox. I've managed to get Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe, Red Baron, Aces of the Pacific, Aces Over Europe, Aces of the Deep, Jet Fighter II and Wings of Glory up and running!

Well damn, looks like you have some fun days of retro-simming ahead of you! I absolutely loved "Aces of the Deep" and I remember the Windows 95 version which supported voice commands.

Indeed, thanks! I'm having a blast playing SWOTL and Wings of Glory. Wings of Glory runs much smoother via DOSBox than it did on my old 66Mhz machine! Aces Over Europe is playing a bit slow though... I might need to do some adjusting here and there.
