I still have the computer, it's in my storage room. I haven't powered it up in years. I need to hook that up again, I found a tape deck the other day too. There's a few emulators on the 'net now too.
Had an Apple II, a Commodore PET, Atari 800, Atari 800XL, 8086/8088/80286/80386sx/80386/80486DX4-100, then nothing for the longest time. Then PII's, PIII's, P4s, Dual Cores, no i7 yet. Never owned an AMD chip and proud of it. I can remember when CGA came out, then EGA, then VGA, then SVGA. The first HD I ever used, was 10MB in size and was amazing, 5 1/4" FD's being the norm at the time.
I think at the time it was more a question of the game supporting SVGA. I bought my first PC in 1992 and the video card and monitor supported SVGA but at the time there were very few games that supported SVGA. I think the very first game I played that had SVGA was "V For Victory: Utah Beach". I believe my first SVGA flight sim was Aces Over Europe.
Ah. Well my gaming software library was limited, I mostly played Flight Simulator 5 and Pinball Dreams 2 (I thought was amazing), plus SimCity 2000. I think all of those ran at SVGA, looking back.
EDIT: Nope, I just checked it out and I was running all that stuff in VGA mode. So my first SVGA gaming was probably another pinball game I bought for Win 3.11, where it ran in 800x600 IIRC.
EDIT 2: Wrong again. Finally found that other pinball game... Hyper 3d Pinball... and it was MS-DOS based, and supported 800x600. Fun tables on that one.

My first computer was a C64, played Blue Max, and Ace of Aces on it, stuff like that.
My first 'real' flight sim was in the early 90's.. probably '89 or '90, playing Secret weapons of the Luftwaffe. I will never play a game again that immersed me so much in a virtual sky. The strategic campaign, the fact that if you crashed or died... That was it! I spent quite some time building up a character to beat Hartmann's record and I cracked up on a landing and had to lay him to rest.
I stuck with the 386 through Yeagers air combat, Aces of the Pacific, Aces over Europe, Red baron, F-117, Falcon 3, Tried to play Tie fighter on it and it just barely booted.
I got a P-90 when thy were brand spanking new (8MB of ram, it was a screamer) Platyed the Origin WW1 game, forgot what it's called (Although it was impressive)
After that, I went to a P-3 450 for a short time (Operation Flashpoint, Commanche/Hokum BOB 1
Athlon 1.4/GeForce 3 in 2000/2001 (This computer was 100% top of the line, cost me some cash) played WW2OL, and BoB, Falcon 4, IL2, conincidentally it's the machine that got me on SimHQ.
AMD 3.7+/9600/9800/1950 until present day. Don't even remember when I got it, but it's relatively old, plays Medieval 2, ARMA and SH4.
Xbox 360 + Projector. That's my current sim setup. LOL! Forza2, Race Pro, Dirt, Ace Combat 6, whatever else I'm playing.

The game you mentioned is "Wings of Glory" and that was one of THE best WWI flight sims I ever played. I really liked the story as well. I got my first Pentium in 1995. It was a P-100 with I think 16 mb of ram.
I just wanted to add to my already massive wall of text,
My current setup as it stands, with the projector and all has been a dream of mine since I played Their Finest Hour close to 20 years ago.
Every time I sit down for a gaming session, I just feel satisfied knowing that I stuck with my hobby long enough not to let my inner child down, that was once playing X-wing on a stuttering 386 and a 14" monitor on a joystick that wouldn't center properly.

Yeah it is!
I remember the wings creaking when you pulled back too far on the stick (or the keyboard when my stick was acting up)
My Packard Bell had 4MB of RAM. I bought 2MB addon modules for $99 each to get 8MB.
My Tandy HX 1000 came with 128k and I spent $800 taking it up 640k. There was one place in the state that sold it and it took me about an hour and a half to get there. I figured if I took it up to 640k, that I would never have to buy ram again and it was a good investment. This was around 1986 or 1987.
The big game I was playing at the time was F-19 Stealth Fighter by Microprose.

Anyone remember "Strike Commander"? One of my all time favorites. I used to rush home from work and spend hours playing that game. And at the end, he guns down his love interest (she was evil anyway)

I remember that game requiring about 40 mb of hard drive space. For the time, that was pretty massive.
