Yes ROF riverbanks could be better but the overall look of the terrain will be fantastic for navigation and highly immersive. SOW's is supposed to have a complex terrain elevation engine that will have more realistic elevation changes at the edge of the rivers.

Its the whole look of the rivers that's odd just not the banks, that's what reminds me of IL2 so much. Real rivers don't look that way or follow pathways like that, check Google earth. Its the dead ends as displayed in the screenies that look the most bizzare. If its not IL2 code (it is unlikely) then there must be similar limitations in Neoqb's terrain engine to the original IL2 one.

Maybe the side rivers with the dead ends are supposed to be man made basins or canals in rl but as in IL2 have been modelled way too wide. I don't see how this would match any real world map closely.

technical problem in general with the rivers

There is no problem they will be perfect

Lots of games have perfect water now, refraction and so on: best I've seen so far is surprisingly divined in GTA4

The margins though are the tricky bits. If the elevation data is still using Oleg's engine then there will be no cliffs or real river edges. Oleg's terrain appears to have a low amount of vertexes to accomodate high resolution, perhaps even reflexive objects

If RoF's render engine can handle real elevation data (or more likely a lower resolution subset) then we can have proper riverbanks and willows, cliffs

If RoF's terrain data cannot accomodate negative (-Y) points or if the data cannot be shifted by adding a constant (say 2m) so that we can have 2m-deep waters, then the good stuff might be tricky. Using a version of Oleg's original engine I mean.

But if RoF is using an object-based model for the terrain, which doesn't sound on given how many vertexes (and so memory space) the map would have to contain- we could have it all

On the other hand if you meant why do silted-up river branches end in whirlpools, maybe they mixed it up with the Norse map and there will be dragons

Given recent inspections of all the WW1 sims in the known world, get ready to break out the champers the day this arrives, we'll talk amongst ourselves about which parts could be better but we will be also be appreciative of the immense amount of work that the developers have put into this one. And not just work but a work of art from the creative hands of men and women who will feel genuine pain if anyone would be so self-centred as to tell them their baby is ugly

What a bee-yoo-tih-ful baby! Smile2

I have to admit I've seen the ROF landacape look better. I wonder if the graphic settings have been dialled down on the PC that took these shots and the video.
For a start the lack of treeline around the fields. I have seen shots of very detailed and lush terrain in previous previews.

The river issue maybe down to a similar setup to IL2. The rivers in IL2 are laid down on tga's. mapped out at with pixel's width, on a large map that translate into wide rivers. Maybe RoF has the same limits.

"I have to admit I've seen the ROF landacape look better."

Me too.
I remember landscapes screenshots which looked almost photo-real.
And these ones are just in the Il2 league.

Oh, probably the landscape was set to "medium" because of the mass numbers of aircrafts dogfighting.

Probably so CHDT.

I'm also wondering if this was an MP mission session too.
