Got mine today also but have not installed it yet. Let us know if it went well, ok?

BTW, in the SimHQ article, they have recommended instructions for the YAP2 install:

--------------------------------
We do highly recommend creating a separate installation specifically for YAP2 as it tends to interfere with the normal operating procedures of the campaign, single-missions, etc. Many of us have mastered the art of multiple installations, and it wasn’t terribly difficult to do it again for this title.

Let’s review that process on how to accomplish a multiple install:

Install the game from the CD, and run the patches included on the YAP2 installation CD. Then, go to the Wings Over Vietnam main folder and rename it. I renamed mine to Yankee Air Pirate 2. Go ahead and run the YAP2 installer now and then delete the desktop icon.

Now, move the Yankee Air Pirate 2 folder to a different, safe location. Be sure to keep track of where you put it because this move will only be temporary. You’re going to eventually have to move it back to the main Third Wire directory.

Re-install Wings Over Vietnam. It may ask you if you want to remove the previous installation. Go ahead and let it. It won’t hurt the Yankee Air Pirate 2 folder now that you’ve moved it. After it’s done "uninstalling", re-install the stock game again.

Move the Yankee Air Pirate 2 folder BACK to the main Third Wire directory. Go into the folder and rename the "WOV.exe" file to "YAP2.exe" and then send it to your desktop as a startup icon.

Now you have two installations of the game that can be started from your desktop, the stock version and the heavily edited Yankee Air Pirate 2 version.
-------------------------------

Is this a good way to go?

Remember...Practice Missions first. We made them interesting so they aren't like reading instructions.

Everyone seems to have received theirs today. Even a guy in the Netherlands got it today. I feel so left out. New York mail carriers suck!

Well, I installed everything as per the article on SimHQ. After setting my options, I went to try an Instant Mission, but the game crashed.

The error message said that '...d3d_30.dll was not found."

Oh well.

The game crashes no matter what mission or game I try...both WOV and YAP2.

You installed:

WOV
Patch1.exe
Patch2.exe
YAPv2.exe

...in that order?

Nothing else? No old WOV installation?

You had better contact me directly. Something has not been made clear to you if you cannot open the Google Earth files or run the game. We will walk you through it.

I am curious HOW is crashes and when.

The game crashes when I click on 'Fly'...on the Preflight screen.

I have no 'old' files because this is the first time I have played any game from this series.

As far as opening the kml files, that is a seperate issue. You said I need Google Earth installed. Frankly, I have not checked to see if I do or not. My guess is I don't.

My main concern is the game crashing when I try and start a mission.

It's a classic Thirdwire game error message. You don't have the lastest Directx version...

So grab it on Microsoft website, install, and here you go

Aviar,
I hope we didn't confuse things. Those instructions are IF you want to have both a YAP 2 install and a stock WOV install. If you just want YAP 2, just install WOV, then from the YAP 2 CD, install patch 1 and patch 2. Then run the YAP installer. Oh, and do not install the Oct 08 patch (and no, it's not on the YAP 2 CD).

Good luck.

Thanks...I wasn't confused at all. I wanted both versions installed and everything went well.

I guess I'll try and I'll try and re-install DirectX.

Now I'm upset...it didn't come in today's mail either. How were they shipped? USPS? UPS? FEDEX?

Thanks guys. I installed DirectX 9.0c and it started up fine. However, in the Quang Khe Ferry mission, I'm only getting 6 FPS on the carrier deck. In IL-2, I can easily get over 100 FPS on very high settings, so I guess I'll have to wait a few years to play this baby.

Aviar,

Use one of the lower level environment packages. The carriers are a big drain but it is complicated by the ocean, clouds and sounds. With fewer clouds, your in-cockpit frame rate should get you through the launch smoothly.
