Hey Thomas, thanks for the heads up..but I've been away from FSX for a while. Which file do these go in?

In MS EXPLORER (only work in MS Explorer)

Type:

%APPDATA%/Microsoft/Fsx

edit with NOTEPAD

Fsx.CFG

if you don't find the entry , simply add them

 Code:
[SCENERY]
SmallPartRejectRadius=2
FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION=0.5

The first one might be harmful in terms of displaying autogen, the latter one should only be used on single core CPUs.

All the other tweaks are good and valid.

Note: Maximum values for trees and buildings is 6000 each. I run those without any performance hit.

Hello,
since flying with Tileproxy, the performance has been kicked up quite a lot!

Of course a the vegetation and many buildings get lost, but that's okay for me go get a photorealistic satellite terrain with a much better performance.

But if you internet connection speed is too low, so that the loading of the terrain is not fast enough (i'm using DSL 16.000 kbps, which works ok), or prefer the original FSx terrain from other reasons, you might also look here:
http://www.flightsimworld.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=92413

Or just google "fsx autogen"

FSX is definitely CPU-limited. It makes practically no difference in performance between flying with my GeForce 7950 GT or my GTX 260.

From extensive experimentation over the last week or two, I would say that the two key things to do are:

- Turn off Traffic, Boats and Airport Traffic. You can leave AI aircraft active, but get rid of the ground vehicles> I know it's nice to have them, but they are a HUGE hit on your frame-rates (10-15 FPS on my i7 system). Note: Having the sliders at 1% seems to cause exactly the same hit as having them at 100%.

- Turn off Light Bloom. It's a pretty effect, but it has a big, big effect on the FPS.

With those two tweaks, I'm running at a pretty consistent 30 FPS with every other slider set to full (including Autogen and Scenery). With FEX, GEX and UTX, the world looks pretty damn sweet.

Can someone recommend settings for my rig?

Intel Dual Core 6600 @ 2.6Ghz
XP SP2
FSX + Accelleration Pack + SP2
Nvidia 9800GTX+
2GB RAM
Widescreen 1680x1050 monitor (might at a 4:3 monitor as a second monitor, frame hit for that? Just for gauges, maps, etc).

You should have no issues running FSX in your monitor's native resolution. I would set everything on max, disable AA and bloom. Pull detail radius down to half (center) and set both autogen sliders to sparse.

FSX is indeed CPU-limited. I went from XP, GF-8800GTX, 2GB RAM and C2D E6700 (2.6GHz) to Vista x64, GF-8800GTX, 6GB RAM and i7 920 (2.6GHz).
Not only am I getting 2-3 times higher framerate, but the jerky uneven framerate normally seen with high autogen settings are gone (with DX10 enabled).

In short, FSX is a true performance hog, so the rule of thumb is "the better (faster) hardware you have, the better it will run".
But!
The best hardware won't get you the most satisfying results if the operating system is chocking on junk and falsely configured drivers.

This is why I've decided to share this collection of very helpful tips with you. All of them are from Nick Needham, a kind of guru when it comes to understanding the way FSX works. I am a tweaking guy myself, especially ever since FSX arrived on my hard disk. I've tried many, many tweaks before, but none worked as well as Nick's.

Preparations:

Now for the real deal:

1) Windows tweaking

Read the posts by NickN carefully (print them out if you need to) and do exactly what he suggests. Don't worry if you don't have a "Prefetch" folder in your Windows XP directory. I've encountered that problem with XP SP3RC2 and I'll post a fix below.
-> http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1208959973 <-

2) Tweaking FSX on the FSX.cfg level

Values to play around with are listed here (Note: For "AffinityMask=" use either "1 = 1 core 3 = 2 cores 7 = 3 cores 15 = 4 cores", depending on the number of cores your CPU has):
-> http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1197380641/1#1 <-
(Scroll down until you reach "Here is a list of the ONLY areas one may wish to work with")

And that's basically all for the basic tweaking. Now for some special things...

Okay, so you're done now. What's left to say?

Keep your eyes off the frakking frame rate counter!

FSX is all about smoothness!

You have your FSX running perfectly if it is a smooth as possible at the best graphics possible for your system!
Finding that "sweet spot" (or G-Spot \:D ) is a thing that can take a while. Feel free to adjust the sliders in FSX as well as some of the values in the fsx.cfg until you reach the perfect compromise between looks and smoothness.

A word on those "resized performace textures":
Don't use them. They are against the "maximum looks with maximum performance" philosophy. ;\)
Low-end systems (and some mid-ends) may be the exception.

Also, feel free to browse around in the threads I've linked to. They might contain more information that could prove useful to you.

Thanks for paying attention, happy flights and again thanks to NickN for his time to write all those things down.

If you have questions concerning tweaking FSX, post them here.

Those guides are outdated. Is there something more recent?

The only tweak guide you really need:
http://www.simforums.com/forums/forum_posts.asp?TID=29041

Continually updated and covers about everything I've seen mentioned as a tweak. It gives you the facts about some of the tweak myths as well.
