Hi all,

Thanks Arneh for the new patch and hind cockpit!

Ive read others have the white flashes problem - has anyone found a fix for this yet?

Also angular chunks of my sky are missing... clouds or "background" sky texture in these chunks is missing... is there also a way to fix this?

Martin.

Cant say I've seen the sky thing, but I have only flown about 5 minutes with the new version..... as I cant get past the white flashes...... they distract me WAY too much to be able to fly serious.

Mainly just bumping your post tho..........

I get the flashes, too. Plus, in certain widescreen modes like 1360x768 there are all these little squares all over the place. I also get frequent crashes with something mentioned about the terrain. I'm having to use an old card, so the frame rates suck, too. Kind of a frigg'n shame what happened to this sim. I have some amazing GlovePIE scripts for it now, that have autotrimming that works well and requires you to be very gentle so you don't screw up your engines when over controlling. Makes things more Blacksharky. But, it's just soooo glitchy now.

So I fixed the white flashes I think... I rolled back drivers to 102.02 or something like that... I have a 8600 GT.

Still havent fixed the angular sky - see images below:

Anyone managed to fix the sky?

Martin.

Just Curious... have you tried this over campaign or just Free Flight?

They seem not to happen on Free flight mode.

Yeah you are right... tried campaign and the flashes are still there... seem to be linked to sounds eg when I'm flying near a friendly arty unit and it's firing the flash happens, also I think the radio messages coincide with it...

It's very annoying as well as the angular sky bug....

Does it happen in free flight if you turn on hostile enemies? Or some of the other free flight options which are turned off by default? Because there shouldn't be much difference between free flight and a campaign apart from those options...

I have tried several combinations of options... I don't get the flashes at all on Free Flight mode. Just Campaigns and Skirmishes, and they seem a little more frequent in Campaign. That could be just perceptive, I have not measured them.

Maybe what is happening is when people do a fresh install their eech.ini file is getting set back to some default values. What I'm thinking of in particular is this setting:

hdwrbuf=0 # hardware buffers to use for sound (0 = software only, n = number of hard buffers) (def = 0)

It's always worked fine for me at 8 or 16 and what I noticed is that it turned on the rear speakers but it sounds like it sets up a different deal with the hardware acceleration with your sound card which would be faster. Firebird would know because he wrote it and he told me it should be set to at least 50 to do any good so why not try setting it to 64 and see what happens?

It sounds like you guys have it associated with the sound so there is also the option:

ns=0 # bypass soundcard (useful for tracking hardware conflicts) (0 = off, 1 = on) (def = 0)

I don't have much hope for that but maybe it's worth a try. It may defeat the purpose of having hdwrbuf set above zero so I would try both but not at the same time . . . unless you want.

I'm also wondering if this is happening to everybody, some, few? If anyone is not having the problem at all they could post their eech.ini file for others to try.

Fresh install. No prior registry or settings info on computer. Reverted to Nvidia 169.21 for this purpose. White flashes do show up from time to time in Skirmish, but not often. None in Free Flight. The horizontal sky tear or whatever it is shows up near the horizon. Sound is fine.

The theory is that some sort of contention between producing the sound and rendering the graphics is causing the white flashes, not that there is anything wrong with the sound. If you are playing a campaign and go to the options and turn off all the sounds and the white flashes stop then that would be pretty good evidence to what is happening.

I rather see that these flashes seem related to events, and some of these events coincide with messages (which have associated audio) but they do not coincide with messages all the time. So more related to the messages and the events that generate the messages, not necessarily with the sound.

Used ns=1, no difference. And changing the hardware buffers (had them set to 64 originally) had no effect.

I get the flashes as well. They're not completely debilitating, but they do reduce the amount of flight time I can get in before they just annoy me too much. Oddly enough, I don't remember these flashes when playing stock EECH...it only started happening when patched to the latest community version.

For reference, i'm running an Nvidia GeForce Go 7400 with 7798 drivers (unofficial)

Hopefully Arneh is hard at work on a fix.... or maybe not, he's probably tired of this sim! Anyways, I appreciate this 1.11 too much to roll back to 1.10, and that's the ultimate compliment! The flashes and sky tearing I can live with for now... those poor folks with the Radeon cards can't even play it at all! NOw that's bad...

Why do people think flight sims are nerdy???
