Thank's for the info guy's. I was having the same problem with my new monitor, native resolution 1680 x 1050. I had the black bars but since changing the aspect ratio to 0 I have the nice wide screen view.

By default, the game(s) will only list 4:3 aspect ratio resolutions; these only available when the engine was designed and built. You need to edit the config.ini to set widescreen resolutions or use a utility such as IL-2 Shturmovik Stab or IL-2 Manager.

Note: Every time you run the game IL-2 Setup module, the resolutions will be reset to 4:3 aspect. This is one reason why the utilities are better; you do not need to run the game IL-2 Setup again. You only need to run the game setup module after the game and patches are initially installed.

i.e.

1. Install game

2. Install patches

3. Run IL-2 Setup

4. Run game and create a player. Set sound and video options. Make sure PERFECT mode is selected and then exit

5. Install IL-2 Shturmovik Stab or IL-2 Manager (do not confuse with IL-2 MAT Manager)

6. Enjoy

IL-2 Shturmovik Stab is good as common widescreen resolutions are provided. It will also automatically detect if your game installed is patched sufficiently to support the widescreen resolutions; not an issue for 1946 but some of the earlier series needed to be patched to a certain level to use them and the original game did not support at all. If you have one that is not listed, you can simply add it to the list! Simple.

Besides, it keeps fixing Dart's attempt at configuration!?! oops What more proof do you need...

Disclaimer: I am the author of Stab so I am totally biased!

OK, I have IL2FB all the way up to Pacific Fighters (I don't have 1946). I have been running it with Windows 7 64-bit and Samsung 40" 1920x1080p TV. It ran 1064x768, but full screen. Now I switched TV to Sony Bravia 46" 1920x1080p. And now it won't run full screen. The max resolution I can set there is 1280x960. It does do that, but it won't go wide screen. I tried using setting suggested in this thread, and it would not even start. Do you, guys, have any ideas?
Thanks,
Eric.

I use a Vizio 55" HD LED, but they all work the same. Are you using a DVI-HDMI connection? If you do, this may help. Open Nvidia control panel settings - "Display" in the Resolution section set Refresh Rate to 60Hz, and PC settings to 1920x1080. Then go to Adjust Desktop size and Position and check "use my display built-in scaling".

If you are not using a DVI-HDMI cable with a PC, you will not get 1920x1880 with the newer HDTVs.

X_MAN,
Thanks. I do use DVI-HDMI connection. The PC resolution works fine (it was also 1920x1080p even with the old 40" Samsung and VGA). The problem was only when I started the game. But I think I figured it out. My TV remote has a "Wide" button, which changes the screen mode. Last night I started the game and pressed this button until the TV was in "Full 2" mode. It fixed my problem, affecting the game only. Tonight I will also look at what you are suggesting. For now the graphics is slightly stretched horizontally, but it's OK for now. At least, this is where I was with the old TV. But all this gave me a good excuse to buy 1946. Am I correct in my understanding the 1946 has native support for wide screen resolution?
Thanks again,
Eric.

So sorry for the delay! I have been into FSX lately. Anyway, IL-2 is not widescreen ready, you have to trick it. I use this setting in the cong.ini:

[window]
width=1920
height=1080
ColourBits=32
DepthBits=24
StencilBits=8
ChangeScreenRes=1
FullScreen=1
DrawIfNotFocused=0
EnableResize=0
EnableClose=1
SaveAspect=0
Use3Renders=0

This is a hack that actually streaches the screen, so you don't gain anything, actually, you loose a tad on the edges but not much to worry about. I use IL-2 Stab by matttm. Note: when you open IL-2 steup, you loose this setting and have to add it again. IL-2 Stab makes it easy to add.

make the setup config read only after you have it all set the way you want it, that way if you accidently open it nothing will change.

If someone wants more FoV than the game normally allows, you can use San's FoV Changer. It uses DeviceLink to control the FoV, AFAIK.
