Blackbird... the "sled"!

Now, years ago Paul Varn made edits to an old model that made the SR-71 fly fairly accurately. I had many hours of mach 3 fun with it, but when I contacted him he gave me an updated set of dynamics that were far more realistic. I asked him to release them, but he was convinced it was unready. Then Alphasim released their SR-71 model, which was very nice, but didn't fly very realistically. The problem though, was that addapting Paul's dynamics to the new model would take a lot of time. Well, that time has come, and you can now download the 5 part set of files from Avsim:
Part 1:

Filename: sra_prt1.zip
License: Freeware
Added: 6th December 2008
Downloads: 124
Author: Paul R Varn
Size: 4380kb

The other parts:
Filename: sra_snds.zip
Filename: sra_panl.zip
Filename: sra_gaug.zip
Filename: sra_eff.zip

Now, since this uses the Alphasim freeware model, you need to go to their site http://www.alphasim.co.uk/fwd.html and follow the "freeware" link to their page, and scroll down the USAF column and download
http://www.alphasim2.com/downloads/Freeware/ALPHA_SR-71A_Blackbird.zip

And then install it all.

I downloaded that set. The only thing that bugs me is that it aparently requires Active Sky according to the readme in order to function. I have issues with a freeware product requiring a payware addon to properly function. Even FSUIPC has a functional free componet.

In what way can a plane addon require a weather addon?

That's what the readme says. I'm only going off of that. I wonder why Active sky is (according to the readme) "required".

From the readme.txt file:
Quote:
Required:
In addition to the above model, you will need a fully patched version
of FS2004. FSX or any other FS version is not supported with this
distribution.
Concorde.gau provided with default FS2000, 2002, and 2004 installations.
Latest version FSUIPC for FS2004.
Latest patched version of Active Sky 6 for FS2004.
Several other gauges which come stock with FS2004 are used,
so you should have all the default gauges.
All realism settings in FS dialogs set to maximum as well as Indicated
Airspeed (NOT TRUE AIRSPEED) set.

Hmm, that's weird. I don't think it won't work without it though, AS' WX engine is not that different from the default one. Why don't you try it and see how it goes?

System died. Once I can find out how bad the damage is and fix it, I intend to. If Active Sky is not required, the author may want to modify the readme to list Active Sky as a recommended addition, not a requirement.

The readme .......

Quote:
INSTALLATION GUIDE - SR-71 Blackbird for FS2004

Extract all the files into your FS2004 root folder. The necessary sub-folders will be created automatically.

1) SOUNDS : The model is set up by default to use the Boeing 737 sounds.

2) ANIMATIONS :

Crew canopies and crew arms : shift-E

Braking parachute : spoiler (/) key. The chute will only be visible if the mainwheels are on the ground.

Inlet Spikes : these move on the flaps key and will enable higher speeds to be achieved at high altitudes.

Jetpipe Nozzles : these flare in and out automatically on the throttle function.

3) FLIGHT MODEL - High Mach numbers are achieveable at high altitudes but we do recommend having the aircraft controlled by the autopilot as manual control is quite difficult at these speeds.

4) ALTERNATIVE TEXTURES FOR TAIL MARKINGS -

Directions for adding the alternative rudder markings.

If you want to add the alternative rudder which has the most recent Beale AFB 'Tactical' style markings you should copy the folder titled - texture.17958 and rename the copy as texture.17967 once you have done that, add the new rudder textures to the new (17967) folder and overwrite when prompted.

Then copy and paste the following text below the last aircraft (17958) description in the aircraft.cfg file.

Text below:

Um... guys... it's dragging this thread WAY off topic, which was to have a small library of cool aircraft listed for us to download and use, but since you guys asked: Paul is VERY much into simulating the entire physics of the Blackbird. ALL of it. He's not making a nice plane to blast holes in the sky with, no, he's made something that can be flown by the numbers using a real SR's aircraft handbook reference data. Seriously. Now, when he started, he didn't have active sky. This apparently put many limitations on just what the upper atmosphere would behave like in FS, among other things, air pressure didn't behave real at all. This caused all sorts of havoc with outside air temps on the plane, stability issues, you name it. Yes he's that serious. When he got Active Sky, it modeled the upper atmospheric conditions, and thus he's spent roughly the last two years making the current version work directly with the aircraft.cfg and whatnot.

If you just want a powerful black jet to blast to Mach 5 and then do touch and go's, download any other Blackbird (there are many variants and FS add ons), but if you want a serious idea of just what it was like to fly the real jet, with all the implications involved, then get this package. See, the Blackbird isn't a fighter jet with a rocket pack, no, it's more like a Boeing 707 with an F1 rocket attached to the back of it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-1_(rocket_engine) , and you have to baby the jet, fly it very carefully, even though you are going very fast.
