The F-18 crashed approximately 2 miles from my house. Reports say a single pilot ejected, and his condition is unknown.

Only minor injuries to the pilot. I suspect from the ejection it self. Imagine the home owner coming home to that! Merry Christmas!

That sucks. From the google maps pic, it was yards away from open land. Such a shame.

Someone spoke to the pilot right after he landed, and the pilot said he had some sort of mechanical failure, but that's all I've heard so far.

People on the ground said that when the plane flew over them they didnt hear any engine sounds. Sounds like it might be an engine failure.

This CNN story says that the pilot old whoever he talked to that he had lost an engine and was attempting to make Miramar on the other one.

Just read a report to where one engine was lost over the pacific and he was trying to make it to miramar on one engine and that one failed during landing procedures. Apparently its not uncommon that in an F-18 that when one engine fails, some of the blades will break off and get sucked into the good engine.
