The explosions aren't wimpy, only most players have been heavily influenced by Hollywood how an explosion should look like.

It is pretty much down to the target how an explosion looks like in IL2:

Well they are when you consider that you can't see thru a real explosion,

Three stages of an explosion,

and here

Watch how the explosions actually change to a smoke ball rather than just dissipate like IL2 mods them. I've always thought they should have been better but the reason may have been at the time conservation of and the limits of the video processing. My influence is actually more gun camera footage and some of the good color films that made it thru the war, like this...... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtN1e7Rdt2Y

Excuse me, but those are simulated explosions built out of gasoline basgs and a very small charge (only a small fuse actually).

That is not nothing like a REAL bomb explosion with almost no flames, lots of black smoke, dust and debris all over.

Talking about Hollywood fakes... biggrin

1) The bombs look nice!

2) Are these above real bomb explosions or just Hollywod-stuff with Kerosin or so?

3) An idea: What about improving loadouts, i.e. adding an ETC501 to the Fw190D-9 or the Bf190F and putting some nice bombs under these ship? Also, the F-4 could use the MG151/20-gondolas...

Try to stay with me on this. I didn't show the explosions for any other reason but to first off show that you cannot see thru them and also the evolution of an explosion. Did you even take the time to look at the actual gun camera footage that I put up before you yapped? wink

2.B I guess there was no such thing as diesel, kerosene, petroleum, bunker oil, gasoline, whale blubber used during WWII!!!

And burning fake air, creating fake smoke, making the "if a tree falls in the forest" fake noise too.

So tell me, why is it that if someone poses a objective question like I did about IL2 explosions, do those like yourself feel the need bash it and minimalize it so that it turns into jabber? The statement that I made was just to ask 'can it be done' Would you rather see the curling fireball similar to those "fake" explosions turning into billowing blooms of acrid black blasts or are you happy to just set there with your hands in your lap? If it weren't for some of the people here asking these types of questions then all would assume that we're satisfied and we need to progress no further, right? right

*EDIT* Not yer buddy pal! butt

I agree with Žuger (albeit its tone of speech could be a bit more urbane) as far as the explosions go:

Bombs and shells: a flash immediately covered by very dynamic projection of matter and smoke (smoke only for flak shell explosions!), then drifting or diffusing smoke. Note also that the delay-fused bombs are impacting the ground in a specific way (small cloud of matter and dust ring); their later explosion will be conventional.

Aircraft crashes: "Hollywood-style" explosions (A/C "explosions" are only high speed gazoline dispersion) except if bombs were carried and one or several of them decide to explode: it should be a compound of the two types mentioned.

A bit different, the explosions within fuel depots and the like, whose visible part would be a ball of flame immediately engulfed in massive fires with billowing smoke (you do not have the high speed fuel dispersion of an airplane crash for most of the concerned fuel)

In any case you never "see" across the flames or matter/dust dispersion clouds at explosion time. I think this effect is a limitation of the Il2 engine and the way the effects are implemented.

That's about as polite as I get wink

I don't agree that this is a limitation of the game engine, notice when you hit a A6M5 in the gas tank, that seems to be fairly well modeled. Now if that were taken to another level and some how incorporated the existing effects for like you said

it should be a compound of the two types mentioned.
and

it may look closer that what it is. So if there is anyone that can answer this... even a simple yes or no would do, I and JV would appreciate it wink
