Uh... well short of recommending you use Avsim's "file search", could you give us a little more idea as to what kind of planes you want? Personally I enjoy the planes at PAD: http://www.premaircraft.com/ as they have VC's, they fly nice, many bush planes and regional turboprops. These days I love the DHC-5 Buffalo, which is a twin turboprop cargo STOL plane that can carry 32 people with equipment.

God that search blows (yes, I've been looking there), along with fsdownload, etc. I can't believe how incredibly bad the searching/categorizing is at these sites. I like the turboprops and commercial jets, along with large military (cargo) aircraft. Haven't gotten into the military jets much.

To my knowledge, Mike Stone and Kazunori Ito don't do virtual cockpits.

Think this may help all those in the elusive search for a great aircraft to fly. Let me start off with AlphaSim's F-105D which was released as freeware recently. Does not work in FSX for some reason so this shot was taken in FS9. Has a VC which looks better then the 2D cockpit as half the gauges were missing. Package includes an F-105D and F model with 5 skins. Available here http://www.alphasim.co.uk/fwd.html Keep it to freeware please and include link if possible.

One key to your question is in asking for aircraft for FSX Acceleration. Which personally I think is a very smart move as chances are that if it doesn't work with FSX Acceleration you may looking at an aircraft that is not a true FSX aircraft. Once again, here's Phil Taylor's "Official" list of true FSX freeware aircraft that are fully FSX compatable. http://blogs.msdn.com/ptaylor/archive/2008/08/31/available-freeware-aircraft-add-ons-and-fsx.aspxUnfortunantly the link to the original full list, with both freeware and payware fully FSX compatible aircraft, linked in Phil's message was lost in a forum data base corruption. But his original freeware list is still up and a great place to start. Once you start looking at the list of true FSX available you may start noticing that certain freeware authors have already made the move to full FSX compliance. This should make seraching for more and newer aircraft made by them a little easir.

Blackbird... the "sled"! Now, years ago Paul Varn made edits to an old model that made the SR-71 fly fairly accurately. I had many hours of mach 3 fun with it, but when I contacted him he gave me an updated set of dynamics that were far more realistic. I asked him to release them, but he was convinced it was unready. Then Alphasim released their SR-71 model, which was very nice, but didn't fly very realistically. The problem though, was that addapting Paul's dynamics to the new model would take a lot of time. Well, that time has come, and you can now download the 5 part set of files from Avsim: Part 1: Filename: sra_prt1.zip License: Freeware Added: 6th December 2008 Downloads: 124 Author: Paul R Varn Size: 4380kb The other parts: Filename: sra_snds.zip Filename: sra_panl.zip Filename: sra_gaug.zip Filename: sra_eff.zip Now, since this uses the Alphasim freeware model, you need to go to their site http://www.alphasim.co.uk/fwd.html and follow the "freeware" link to their page, and scroll down the USAF column and download http://www.alphasim2.com/downloads/Freeware/ALPHA_SR-71A_Blackbird.zipAnd then install it all.

I downloaded that set. The only thing that bugs me is that it aparently requires Active Sky according to the readme in order to function. I have issues with a freeware product requiring a payware addon to properly function. Even FSUIPC has a functional free componet.

That's what the readme says. I'm only going off of that. I wonder why Active sky is (according to the readme) "required". From the readme.txt file: Required: In addition to the above model, you will need a fully patched version of FS2004. FSX or any other FS version is not supported with this distribution. Concorde.gau provided with default FS2000, 2002, and 2004 installations. Latest version FSUIPC for FS2004. Latest patched version of Active Sky 6 for FS2004. Several other gauges which come stock with FS2004 are used, so you should have all the default gauges. All realism settings in FS dialogs set to maximum as well as Indicated Airspeed (NOT TRUE AIRSPEED) set.

System died. Once I can find out how bad the damage is and fix it, I intend to. If Active Sky is not required, the author may want to modify the readme to list Active Sky as a recommended addition, not a requirement.

Hi, The only thing that bugs me is that it aparently requires Active Sky according to the readme http://www.alphasim2.com/downloads/Freeware/ALPHA_SR-71A_Blackbird.zipThe readme ....... INSTALLATION GUIDE - SR-71 Blackbird for FS2004 Extract all the files into your FS2004 root folder. The necessary sub-folders will be created automatically. 1) SOUNDS : The model is set up by default to use the Boeing 737 sounds. 2) ANIMATIONS : Crew canopies and crew arms : shift-E Braking parachute : spoiler (/) key. The chute will only be visible if the mainwheels are on the ground. Inlet Spikes : these move on the flaps key and will enable higher speeds to be achieved at high altitudes. Jetpipe Nozzles : these flare in and out automatically on the throttle function. 3) FLIGHT MODEL - High Mach numbers are achieveable at high altitudes but we do recommend having the aircraft controlled by the autopilot as manual control is quite difficult at these speeds. 4) ALTERNATIVE TEXTURES FOR TAIL MARKINGS - Directions for adding the alternative rudder markings. If you want to add the alternative rudder which has the most recent Beale AFB 'Tactical' style markings you should copy the folder titled - texture.17958 and rename the copy as texture.17967 once you have done that, add the new rudder textures to the new (17967) folder and overwrite when prompted. Then copy and paste the following text below the last aircraft (17958) description in the aircraft.cfg file. Um... guys... it's dragging this thread WAY off topic, which was to have a small library of cool aircraft listed for us to download and use, but since you guys asked: Paul is VERY much into simulating the entire physics of the Blackbird. ALL of it. He's not making a nice plane to blast holes in the sky with, no, he's made something that can be flown by the numbers using a real SR's aircraft handbook reference data. Seriously. Now, when he started, he didn't have active sky. This apparently put many limitations on just what the upper atmosphere would behave like in FS, among other things, air pressure didn't behave real at all. This caused all sorts of havoc with outside air temps on the plane, stability issues, you name it. Yes he's that serious. When he got Active Sky, it modeled the upper atmospheric conditions, and thus he's spent roughly the last two years making the current version work directly with the aircraft.cfg and whatnot.
If you just want a powerful black jet to blast to Mach 5 and then do touch and go's, download any other Blackbird (there are many variants and FS add ons), but if you want a serious idea of just what it was like to fly the real jet, with all the implications involved, then get this package. See, the Blackbird isn't a fighter jet with a rocket pack, no, it's more like a Boeing 707 with an F1 rocket attached to the back of it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-1_(rocket_engine) , and you have to baby the jet, fly it very carefully, even though you are going very fast.

Freeware Lockheed L-1649A Starliner, Version 2.1 by Manfred Jahn, for FSX and FS9This is a Super Constellation, the last piston version, in all it's splendor! It flies VERY nicely, has a very nice 3d virtual cockpit, 2d panel to match, and a really complex engineer's panel. The checklist for getting the systems up and engines going is... daunting... but FEAR NOT: there is a shortcut in the form of a "auto start engines" icon on the engineer's panel (the icon resembles the Microsoft FS toggle shortcuts that bring up the radio panel, or the GPS, throttles and so on), this icon square has a image resembling a key and is located at the far right, third icon down. "Supercharger and Mixture level set best" icon is also available, look for the square "SM" icon. You DO however need to open up the fuel tanks and a few other procedures, but there is a good tutorial included. More to the point though, this is a truly beautiful plane, and it's represented as well as anyone could reasonably expect from freeware, with very nice repaints, custom gauges and autopilots, a panel that's either somewhat "easy", or it's complex (somewhat easy being with the shortcuts I mention), it flies just as one would expect out of a very well engineered airliner of the 40's and 50's, graceful landings and takeoffs, and just chugs along without a hurry in the world at a leisurely FL220 (22000 feet ASL). Very much worth the effort to install and learn. Oh, and I downloaded the engine soundpack made for the Cyclone engines by Friedrich Trachsel from flightsim.com, which was made for this pack. However, if you are using this in FSX, you may have to choose a different soundpack, I'm not sure of that. Lockheed L-1649A Starliner Version 2.1 Filename: l1649a_version_2_1.zip License: Freeware Added: 16th December 2008 Downloads: 4656 Author: Manfred Jahn, Hansjoerg Naegele, and others Size: 14453kb
File Description: This version supersedes version 2.0. New features include 2D day and night panels, windshield wipers, revised flame effects, Calclassic style autopilot, refined flight dynamics, final approach altitude and decision height callouts, and an alternate "no VC" model for slow PCs. Providing accommodation for ninety-two tourist class or twenty-six first-class and forty-five tourist-class passengers, the Starliner entered service with TWA in May 1957. It was designed to fly Los Angeles-London and Paris-Tokyo in 20 plus hours non-stop. Other major operators included Air France and Lufthansa. Model, textures, and VC by Manfred Jahn, panels and gauges by Hansjoerg Naegele, 2D panel by Diego S. Barreto, effects and flight dynamics by Roland Berger, documentation by Howard Sodja. See the Starliner project threads at calclassic.proboards55.com for questions, comments, and general feedback.
It was arguably the largest, widest-range, and most expensive piston-engine airliner of its day (reportedly $3,219,550.00). The Starliner marked the end of the line of Constellation designs. It had an entirely new wing of greatly increased span (150 feet as opposed to 123 feet on the "Super G" Constellation).

Freeware Lockheed L-1649A Starliner, Version 2.1 by Manfred Jahn, for FSX and FS9
Link please! Doh! Flightsim.com , Avsim.com for the downloads, but for support and additional repaints, this plane project's forum is located at: http://calclassic.proboards55.com/index.cgi?board=generalSome screenshots : http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?p=23265#post23265http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?t=2568&page=3http://calclassic.proboards55.com/index.cgi?board=screenies&action=display&thread=628http://www.calclassic.com/starliner.htmI should point out that I have many hours with the earlier version 1.0 Beta, but the 2.1 has a great many improvements, including the VC. The other night, I did a full IFR flight, going from VOR to VOR, from Victoria Canada to Burbank California, all in rain/lowClouds, and then landed manually but using the ILS beam to follow blindly until finals. The autopilot is a vintage one, but works exactly as advertised, and it's not really any more complicated than any other AP. Bottom line: I can't find ANYTHING worth criticizing about this outstanding effort, although it gave me a deeper appreciation for how complex operating those old piston engines must have been!

Freeware (former payware) Alphasim A-90 Orlenok What is this? Well, it's one of the weirdest aircraft ever! It's half boat, half airplane, but not a flying boat, not a floatplane... no, this is a jet powered mega-fast water-borne "thing". It flies in the air, but VERY low. So low that you have to pull back the stick to clear treetops on islands!!! You won't need to use the autopilot. It maintains it's direction AND ALTITUDE all by itself, and with the right trim setting, will do so at top speed of 240 knots! At those speeds it'll normally sit at about 35 feet above the sea level. That's so low that to do a 30 degree turn, you'll need to gain at least 70 feet, or your wingtip will hit water and send you for a spin/crash! So to turn, pull back the stick and then bank gently. Yes, it has flaps, use them to take off out of the water. Yes, it has landing gear... but fragile, very fragile. If you must (unrealistically I might add) land on a runway, do so with only about 100 fpm or you'll likely crash. In the real world it only uses the gear to slide up on land at concrete water ramps. Where to fly it? Well, over water of course! Ok, I like to fly it around the Seattle-Victoria-Vancouver (Canada, not Oregon) area, as there is lots of water but also small island obstacles to navigate and deal with (can I fly over this bit or should I turn out of it's way?). Perhaps Finland-Sweden, Caspian Sea ports, the Mediteranean would make choice locations, and maybe even an invasion of Taiwan (no offense to the Taiwanese, just something to try in FS). But what it it it really? An abandoned Soviet Union project to make a high speed transport capable of carrying much heavier cargo than an equivalent airplane, over water. Think naval assault invasions. Or cargo transport across seas. They worked as intended, but I think the limited utility (no overland flights) doomed a technically competent design to the historybooks. For more on the aircraft: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A-90_Orlyonokhttp://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=RwKi58lEFZohttp://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=hSaAvl3egwgGo to http://www.alphasim.co.uk/And click on Freeware, then scan the Soviet column for the A-90. ALPHA Simulations 2004 A-90 'Orlenok' ('Eaglet') transport & assault ekranoplan Once you have it installed, add a trim setting gauge of your choice, personally I use the gauge "747RT.rp.trim" but this is not a standard trim gauge so unless you have this one already it won't appear, but be sure to add the gauge line to the panel.cfg something like this: gauge27=747RT.rp.trim, 590,735, 30, 15 // your edit additional trim gauge

The screenshot does not do that airplane justice. It's actually photo-real. You can't tell it from that shot. This jet is a must have. I've bought payware that I wished look that good.

Would recommend recently released 727 for FSX by Captain Sim. They have really outdone themselves with this bird. Loved it in FS9, in FSX it is even better!

Stam, good to know! Thank You,A lot of people have been complaining that the sounds were very bad.Did you find any problem? Thanks Stam /Patrick/ Patrick, In fact I don't care too much about the sounds. I'm more in visuals and systems These are more than perfect.

Can this be worked around? Any experience out there? I did an "upgrade" to properly bring the F-86 into FSX. Did you download it from SectionF8s homepage ("Intermediate Fix"), read the readme thoroughly and did everything mentioned in it?

First of all, you're welcome. Unless, of course my sarcasm detector is broken. I fumbling about I also found a large file to extract in the Panels folder that expanded the instrument panel performance in FSX. Please have a look, Mr. Heretic if you have not already found this "secret" unextracted file within the Panel folder. The panel.cfg? The only other file I could think of would be an archive containing gauges and stuff. But this one didn't get modified for the upgrade... And if you like vintage planes, I would recommend the FW-190a series which was just released and mentioned elsewhere at this site. It is pricey (29E)and limited in dowloads (x3), but a worthy addition to FSX. Yep, it's an awesomely well made plane, but... a) I prefer 109s b) I'm more of the "haulin' butt" type of pilot (CRJs, 737s...you get the idea) ...thus I can't find a good reason to justify spending money on this aircraft. As a student, I need to think about 34093489347 times before getting an add-on. This is limiting my payware portfolio to absolute necessities (Ultimate Terrain X, Acive Sky X). Greetings to "Californee" (to quote South Park)!

Text below: [fltsim.2] title=Lockheed SR-71A 17967 sim=Lockheed SR-71A model= panel= sound= texture=17967 kb_checklists=Lockheed SR-71A_check kb_reference=Lockheed SR-71A_ref description=First flight 3rd August 1966. Last flight 14th February 1990. Was the first SR-71 to fly into the persian Gulf region during an 11 hour mission from Kadena AB Japan. Was the last SR-71 to depart Det 4 RAF Mildenhall, UK. Reactivated during 1995 and overhauled for use with by the 9th RW Det 2 at Edwards AFB, then retired again during 1998, monetary constraints appear to be the only adversary she can't outrun...\n\n\n atc_airline=Air Force atc_id=967 atc_heavy=1 ui_manufacturer=ALPHA ui_type=SR-71A Blackbird ui_variation=17967 atc_flight_number=Oil 54 COPYRIGHT INFORMATION These files are freeware. They are unsupported, so please do not e-mail us if you have problems. A no-show in CFS2 will be down to either sounds or panel aliasing, or both (see note on sounds above, same applies for panels). Under no circumstances may these files be sold or uploaded to a payware site. All rights reserved - AlphaSim 2006 www.ALPHASIM.CO.UKphil1 AT alphasim DOT co.uk So ... ??? OFF O.K. I'll bite on this one but does it require FS2004 or will it work in FSX? If so how's the model in FSX and will it work w/ Acceleration add-on? THANKS.
