Lost cause here, I reckon. I should stick with Sim Outhouse if I were you, where CFS2 is thriving.

CFS2 had some pretty good expansions like the Pearl Harbor mod and a WWI mod that was actually really good. Many things about CFS2 were better than CFS3, like gun sounds and, frankly, graphics. Unfortunately, A.I. enemy fighters were even more predictable in their combat tactics.

I still have CFS2 (and the expansion mods) but it's no longer installed on my PC.

If already have bought CFS2 this how you Install new planes into it.

HOW TO INSTALL THIRD PARTY PLANES INTO CFS2

This post will be dedicated for those who are having problems in installing AC into CFS2.

Installing AC into CFS2 is real easy once you have learn what to look for and how this program works.

The first thing I recommend is for you to get familiar with the inner working of CFS2.

Go to: Mycomputer C/Local Disk(C/Program
files/Microsoft Games/Combat Flight Simulator 2

Get familiar the all the its folder the names of the files before you start to down loading anything.

Now find the Website you want to down load your new plane from.

You can start by browsing through this post. It has many Website dedicated to the improvement of CFS2 in it.

1.http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=cfs2;action=display;num=11...

Lets start with the CFS2 section dedicated to AC in this Wedsite.

2.http://www.simviation.com/cfs2aircraft1.htm

There are many more Websites with AC for CFS2 as well.

The next thing for you to do is to down load the new third party plane into a New folder created by you. You place this folder any where you like. You can call it New AC if you want or give it any name you like. Now you go to your Web site that you want to down load the new AC. Down load it to this new AC folder or directly load it to the AC folder. The AC forlder is call AIRCRAFT.

You need to get familiair with the content of the AC and what is needed to make it work properly.

Every AC has this basic folders inside their respective AC folder. I picked the A6M2_ZERO as example:

1.MODEL: the configuration of the AC.

2.PANEL:The panel and its working

3.SOUND: Sound of the AC.

4.TEXTURE: The texture of the AC.

they also have this basic files.

aircraft CFG: It give the AC its Identification and name within the CFS2 program. It also has some other basic information.

a6m2_zero DP: Damage properties and weapons points and load.

a6m2_zero AIR file: its Arial abilities. In other words how this plane should fly according to its developers.

a6m2_zero CDP : This files keeps a record of the AC previous files. Now this is replicated every time you fly with this AC. You can and should deleted it every time you add somthings new like weapons to the AC. Do not worry it will replicate itself evey time Automaticaly. If you do not deleted it the new weapons or other install may not show up.

Now down load your new AC in to the folder you chose by routing it through Save and not Open option.

Go inside the new AC folder and look for the AC folder and see if it has the all of its proper folder and files. Some times you may find additional folder within the AC folders and some times the AC is insde the folder with the same name. You always need to go inside the AC folder to make sure if the AC is inside of it.

If it has additional folders you need to copy and paste them to their respective folder to enable the AC to show and fly properly in this program.

After you have done that you need to go inside the new install Aircraft folder and see if in has additional folder you need to install. Sometimes within the Aircraft folder there are additional folder that need to be install. Like gauges and weapons. If its gauges all you need to is to copy the content inside the Gauge folder and copy them into the main gauges folder. You need to make the to do same steps with any aditional folder you might find inside the Aircraft folder.

If you need to add new weapons you need to go inside the SCENEDB folder and look for a folder call weapons. Go inside of it and you will find two folders call scenery and texure. Copy and the new weapons in the appropiate folder.

This way your new addon plane will show up in the game. Most planes doe are install ready. In other words all you need is to install them and they will show up in the Sim.

make sure they have the appropiate content inside of them. The most common missing element is no sound inside the Sound folder. Thats easy to fix. All you is get a new sound from another plane of the same model with sounds and copy and paste inside the new planes sound folder.

Now you should be able to fly the legandary Wildcats and Hellcats plus the Avengers and SBD and sink enemy carriers like out for fathers had to do in World war two.

If you take them to the next level you feel the thrill of shooting down a Zeros or been shot down by one. You will feel the danger of Naval arial combat during that Era. Believe it or not the Pacific Arial war was a lot tougher than what we have been told.

I also recommend you scroll through this post. It may help improve your enjoyment of this Sim:

1.http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=cfs2;action=display;num=11...

How to add planes into CFS2 by Jaxons:

2.http://www.michael-reimer.com/CFS2/CFS2_Tips.html

By Hagar:
BGL files go in CFS2\SCENEDB\weapons\scenery
BMP textures in CFS2\SCENEDB\weapons\texture
& DP files in CFS2\OBJECTS_DP

With this c

I also recommend you learn how to Build missions and campaings. Thats where this Sim really rocks. Look for Coyotes Mission Builder Ttorial:

http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/syb2.cgi?section=cfs&file=cc_handbook.zip

You may ask:what is the MODEL_DBG file that is inside the stock AC folder.

I would not worry about it. The addon planes do not need this folder to be able to work properly in this Sim.

I recommend you install only three to four AC at any one time for them to show up in the Sim.

Thre is also a limitation of one 90 to 100 planes per Hangar. Hangar it simply means inside the AIRCRAFT folder.

There is a utility that will enable you to install a lot more planes per install.

With this program you can install more than one thousand planes. Its call AC man:

http://fly.to/mwgfx

You need to look for the CFS2 AC utlilities section. Its real easy to install and use. this utility will make it possible for the user to have as many as eighteen Hangars within one install. You can use it in different installs. This will allow you to have unlimited amount of AC to fly with in this program.

How to install new texure so will show up to the Mission Builder. That real easy. All you need to do is to install the new texutes in to the AC Texure folder. If you want to use it as new texure in a new plane like for example you want the stock plane with the new texute to show up as a addon in the Mission Builder. All you need to do is to create a new AC folder. Here I will explain it in a step by step process.

1.Go inside ADDON folder

2.Create a new folder

3.Give the new folder the AC name plus the new texure name.

4.Copy and paste the content of the original plane inside the AIRCRAFT you wanted to chage the texure from into the new AC folder foder inside the ADDDON folder.

5.Go and copy and paste the new TEXURE call kamuri into the texure folder.

6.Go inside the new AC folder and look for the file call CFG and open it up with your notepad.

[fltsim.0]
title=A6M2 Zero
sim=A6M2_Zero
model=
panel=
sound=
texture=
KB_checklists=a6m2_zero_check

Change the title name form A6M2 Zero to A6M2 Zero Kamuri.

[fltsim.0]
title=A6M2 Zero kamuri
sim=A6M2_Zero
model=
panel=
sound=
texture=
KB_checklists=a6m2_zero_check

Now you have a new AC that will show up as a new AC with a different TEXURE.

7. Now cut the new plane and paste it inside the AIRCRAFT Folder.

Thats it!

I hope I have been helpful

If you have any question do not hesitate and come back to this forum and I and other members will more than thrill to help you out.

I have decide to make a post placing most of the links I have with CFS2 planes. I hope to you like this post. My only objective is to help fellow members to find most of the planes that have been develope throughout the years for this community by its dedicated developers.

My first recomdation if you to install Acman from this Website that will anable you to install most if not all this planes in different Hangars and in different CFS2 Installs.

1.http://fly.to/mwgfx#

A WORD OF CAUTION

When you use the Acman and create a new Hangar you need to include the stock planes. What you can do is to make a New Folder and place a copy of the Stock planes in it. When you make the new Hangar just copy the stock planes from this Folder. Remember also that you are limit to 95 to 100 planes per Hangar. You do get up to18 Hangar with this program.

My secound recommendation is for you to install this utility from Sim-outhouse that will allow you to change planes and ships with in a Miision and Campaigns in secounds.

It also will give the ability to change whole planes Hangars and convert them into Ai Bandits in Quick mission.

This way you do not have activate plane after planes manualy. Its call mk_cfs2_uti2v.zip

Once you have reach the Area you want to fly from you need to improve your scneries to enjoy to its most.

Here is How!

This are my recomendation for upgrading the Pacific scenries in CFS2!

This are my tips on how to improve your Pacific sceneries.

This is what I recommend to improve your Pacific Theater scenery.

First you should get Stiz wonderful World Texures.

1.http://www.simviation.com/cfs2scenery17.htm
and also this package of Aifields for Asia here CFS2 Eastern Asia WWII Runways Scenery Full Consolidated Package.

Then I would get the Pacific Coast upgrade.

2.http://www.simviation.com/cfs2scenery11.htm

Following that install CFS2 Tropical Texture.

3.http://www.simviation.com/cfs2scenery12.htm

You can also install Stiz Pacific Ocean Texure by Stiz.

4.http://www.simviation.com/cfs2scenery17.htm

You can also fix the Pacific Ocean with Stiz Pactex 1 to 5 folders. Remember the Pactex is just for fun. You can the different shore looks as you with Pactex folder 5.

5.http://www.demons7th.com/pactex.html

The best Japan Scenery available is this one.

6.http://flightinfo.ens.ne.jp/tmurakam/terrain/

Or you can try this one if you like.

7.http://members.at.infoseek.co.jp/fsclubnet/

You can also install the Philippines sceneries I install. Its of very good quality.

8.http://www.sim-outhouse.com/master_ftp/cfs2/cfs2-scenery/

You should also install eawwii Asia 360 Airfields complete and Japan Mainland airfield package of 93 airfields.

9.http://www.netwings.org/library/CFS2%5FScenery/index-3.html

You can improve your Burma scenery by installing Lowengrin Burma Dynamic Campaign and installing his Burma scenery. Beside its a pretty good Campaign.

10.http://members.shaw.ca/dcgen/dcg_burma.html

You should also get Maskrider Scenery packages. They are one of my favorite. They include beautiful Pacific Theater Airfields.

11.http://www.netwings.org/library/Microsoft%5FCFS2/Maskrider%5FScenery/

I also recommend Stiz or LW Clouds at Sim-ouhouse. They are quite a improvement over the stock clouds. You can also get new clouds at:

12.http://fsw.simflight.com/

NEW

You can also install Hawaii scenery from this Website.

13.http://fly.to/mwgfx

Alaskan scenery.

14.http://rcaf440redbat.homestead.com/Scenery.html

Go to its CFS2 scenery section and you will find there.

A simple explanation I found on how to activate new sceneries.

14.http://flug.hp.infoseek.co.jp/enghow.htm

Now you do not have any excuses. You can not tell your family you will not take them to Europe and visit London or Paris. You can"t say you can not effort to fly to the Far East. Its available with a Joystick and a good plane. You have over one thousand plane to chose from. All you have to do is wait until the war is over. Other wise you might be shot down. LoL

Just enjoy it as much as possible.

This is not the only good sceneries available for this Sim. This are my suggested sceneries only.

I hope I have been helpful

Now I"m enjoying this Sim more than ever and I hope you are as well. Now you can fly all over the World in what ever Theater you want with visual style.

I enjoy flying as much over the European Theater as the Pacific Theater. I hope you do to. They both give me a special kind of joy.

I hope I have been helpful

My tips on how improve European sceneries.

Europe

I installed McClelland UK sceneries.

1.http://www.simviation.com/cfs2scenery3.htm

I added Ian Elliot London upgrade and Mathias CFS1 airbases o my European Theater.

2.http://www.simviation.com/cfs2scenery8.htm

Then I added the European Coast line to my install.

3.http://www.simviation.com/cfs2scenery11.htm

I also install the BOB selfinstall scenery by Gary Bums.

4.http://www.simviation.com/cfs2scenery13.htm

I also went downloaded Simouthouse Europe Mesh at their backup site.

5. http://www.sim-outhouse.com/master_ftp/cfs2/cfs2-scenery/

You can either install Sim-outhouse or Netwings sceneries Mesh. They both are of very good quality. Its up to you.

6.http://www.netwings.org/library/CFS2%5FScenery/

part two:http://www.netwings.org/library/CFS2%5FScenery/index-2.html

Last but not least I recommend you down load McClelland European Scenery for CFS2. Its a must if you really want to improve this program sceneries up to grade. With his sceneries you will not only have Cities and forest but also roads.

7.http://www.aer.ip3.co.uk/scenery.htm Website not working

You must install this European Texure upgrade. Its the best one in my humble opinion.

8.http://www.mlk-airbase.wz.cz/msfs/scenery/texture_swap.html

You get a cities upgrade right here in this Web. It will not make the cities look more real from 1000 feet and below but it make them look better from 1000Ft and above.

I hate CFS2 clouds. Thanks to our members there are some new clouds available as well. You can get the one from Sim-outhouse call Stiz Clouds or LW clouds. Its you choice. I have install them both in different install that I have. You also download a new Sun.

I forgot Stiz European Water. This is also a must.

9.http://www.sim-outhouse.com/index.ph...ploadName=stiz
Europe has never looked so good in this program

New

You can also add Seasonal Texutures at Avsim.
They are call cfs2hw.cfs2sp,cfs2su,scfswi,and cfs2fa.Look for them through the search engine at AvSim.Warning you will have to do it Manualy, but its real easy and lots of fun once you figure it out.

[url=10http://www.avsim.com/]10http://www.avsim.com/[/url]

This are General upgrades. There are more specific area upgrades that are also available for you pleasure.

Check out this Web dedicated for the improvement of European Scenery.

11.http://combatfs.homeip.net/cfs2coast/

12. Improve World Mesh By Rhumbaflappy http://www.sim-outhouse.com/index.php?ll...me=rhumbaflappy

I want to Thank this Website and the others like Netwings and Sim-ouhouse and all the Sceneries Developers and smaller Websites for Helping us enjoy this program with your talent. Without out your help this program would not have been the joy it is toda

I want to help those who are are looking for things that only little websites can offer.

The major Websites are a fantastic source of freeware and have been a great help to those of us who love this hobby.

But some times you can only find something that you are looking for through our smaller Websites by a dedicared small group of members of this Hooby.

Here I will give you a list of small Websites that might help find some of the things you may looking for that the bigger Websites may not have available.

I f You want planes to downloaded you can download them from this Websites and others.
1: [url=www. Simviation.com]www. Simviation.com[/url]
2: www.Sim-outhouse.com/.
3: www.Simnetwork.com
4: www.netwings.org
If you want some the best German plane especially Bf109 this is of one of the best site I have found.
http://myzone59.ath.cx/accueil.php3
Now for some the of the best Japanese plane available this a nice Web site.
http://hago003.hp.Infoseek.co.jp/index.html
For Texure. I found some seasonal Texure for Europe in Simnetwork.com in the Scenery section that sre prertty cool.
You can also download very good Italian planes from this Web site:
[url=Http://www.Isoliti4gatti.com/]Http://www.Isoliti4gatti.com/[/url]

if you want to edit your missions and campaings. Here is very good Utility that I highly recommend at Sim-outhouse.com . Its call Mks_cfs_utility.v2 . This ulity not allows you change you plane in your mission and camp folders but also help you create different hangers for different theaters of war for you quick missions builder.

1.http://www.combatfs.com/index.php?loc=downloads&page=downloads&FileType=cfs2-uti...

Another Utility that I highly recommend is call CFO Weather . With this utility you can change the weather of every Mission as you fly thruough it . It also has a Auto pilot program that is very neat. It has many other features not avalable before. One is a no cheat mode that does not allow you to cheat out of the cockpit. Another thing I discover the other day is that if you have other installs representing different theater of war. You can use the MB of each new install thru this program. You can find this program at.
http://www.caw15.com

Another Utility I recommend is to download Co man

utillity from: http://fly.to/mwgfx

This utility will allow you to install aircraft into 18 different Hangars. Just a word of advice is to always place the original stock planes in every Hanger. Other wise the program will not work properly.
Once you use all the Hangers. You could create your own Hangars and place them on the Aircraft folder whenever you want to use them. I recommend you use the program first before you try to create your own Hangars because it much easier to change Hangers thru it. All you need is name them acording to what Theater of War war you want use ti in. Its real easy.

Another Wbsite that real cool its: www.absquad.net
In this Website you get most of the Upgrade and Utilities you may need ti improve CFS2. The best thing about it is that they all come with self Instalators. So you do not have to worry where to install them.

Another obtion in playing this game its that you can played in a Dynamic Mission and Campaing format if you want to. You can get the dynamic Campaing at :
http://members.shaw.ca/dcgen/

Another thing I found is a great European Scenary at :
www.mlk-airbase.wz.cz/msfs/scenery/texture_swap.html

More Upgrades can bee found at :

There are a couple of things that make this sim viable.

1. The best mission builder of any WW2 CFS.

2. The whole world is mapped, mesh, terrain, etc.

3. There is practically every aircraft you can think of with good flight and damage modeling.

4. There are alot of new things being done with scenery, since the GSL has been tapped.

5. There are improvements in the AI, which are basically tweaks and fixes.

6. There is lots of eye and ear candy, and it's all well done.

7. You can even change weather on the fly
------------------------------------------------

If the upcoming BOB SOW from 1C:maddox has a good mission builder equal to the CFS2 mission builder and a highly improved AI performance it will be over for this sim.

The ONLINE game doesn't exist as far as I know. There maybe a few servers floating around for die-hard users I'm not aware of.

--------------------------------------------------

All the addons for this sim are really terrific, but without an updated core program, updated graphics and competent physics engine this sim is almost dead now.

I still enjoy it, because of I enjoy building the missions and programming for all kinds of on the fly stuff.

It would have been the best available CFS now, if MSFT had just improved the CFS2 in lieu of trying to reinvent the wheel with the CFS3. A MONSTROUS MISTAKE. I've always heard old Bill was a business genius. I can tell you he ignored the most basic business rule, if you have a winner don't replace it with an ego based I CAN DO BETTER anything. Surf the waves while they are coming, you might get the ride of your life.

IMO.. if MSFT took the CFS2 right now and brought it up to date it would be the most popular CFS RIGHT NOW. If MSFT would have seriously addressed the ONLINE game and not treated CFS users like Console players (the Zone) the popularity of CFS2 would have been astronomical. The biggest market for games is in the US, and that goes for CFS as well.

The ETO and PTO are the most popular with Americans even now.

There are continual releases of new CFS type games like the new battlefield pacific or whatever it's called. They spent as much time on in as a good CFS, but it will just be another quick release, make the bucks and do something else. Too bad, the almighty dollar forces the possibilities of a really competent CFS into the doubtful category for some time to come.

--------------------------------

This may crush some feathers, but I believe it to be a fact. Oleg Maddox, actually cares more about producing a very excellent PC based CFS product than any developer I know of. Oleg has been the most supportive developer of PC CFS for the past 10 years. No one has his desire or ability to do better at this time. We are all expecting great things from the BOB SOW. Oleg has never disappointed me in almost 10 years of doing the IL2 series.

So, like many of you I am marking time until BOB SOW goes gold. That will be an exciting day, probably like we haven't experienced with CFS in several years. There is nothing new being released better than what we have, which is a very sad comment.

The gameplay takes place in the Pacific War and includes campaigns loosely based on historical air battles, from both the American and Japanese perspectives.
Because of the open-ended architecture of the Microsoft Flight Simulator series, the platform for this simulator, many enthusiasts have created massive amounts of extra scenery, aircraft, missions and campaigns.

[edit] Strategy and air combat software

Combat flight simulators, although derived from standard aircraft flight simulators, are not simply aimed at leisure flying in a nicely simulated environment. They deal mainly with aircraft performance, maneuvering, strategy and tactics, opponent behavior, extra visual effects (like weapons, explosions , target damage) and are often inspired from historical air combat data. As such, not all related software on the market, should be called 'combat flight simulators,' as many focus only on graphics, while others rely on ‘shoot’em up’ features with no importance placed on strategy or mission variety.
In the early 90s, the first ever such combat simulator with rich strategy features and its own mission building possibilities was the ’trilogy’ package by LucasArts, known as the "Air Combat Classics." It consisted of "Battle Hawks 1942," "Their Finest Hour," and "SWOTL". In this software, the opponent developed strategies on attack and defense that you had to compete and there were facilities for building your own missions and/or campaigns and even recording and filming some duration of your own fighting scene and then rewinding to look around in free view to assess the results. Additionally you could fly all the types included, that contained fighters and bombers. In bombers one could play all the roles in them, like pilot, gunner, bombardier etc. Due to their exteme popularity, there are still websites hosting guidelines, free mission files and other add-ons open for free downloads compatible to the games.
Designed, however, in the days of poorer PC performance it was limited to VGA 16 color graphics and was suitable rather for the slower CPUs below some 150 MHz. For unknown reasons, LucasArts decided not to update this product on PCs, despite the demand, but eventually promoted another similar version for the PS2 platform (‘Secret Weapons Over Normandy’) that came rather closer to a shoot’em up version. A number of others was passed fairly unnoticed by the strategy enthusiasts who appreciated the mental factor more than the graphics.

[edit] The Combat Flight Simulator 2 (CFS2) as a Strategy simulator

Ever since, the main product that appeared on the market combining sound flight simulator characteristics with a ‘strategy philosophy’ in air combat was the Microsoft (MS)-CFS2. Actually most of LucasArts ‘tactics’ re-appeared with it. One cannot comment about any possible ‘co-ordination’ between the two software but for those ‘veterans’ who used to design missions with both programs some obvious relations can be detected. However , since Microsoft has maintained all its good characteristics from its previous ‘know-how’ with flight simulators and its modern graphics, the CFS2 program stays always well above the typical shoot’em-up mentality and has been praised a lot by the users who also like its creativity and add-on features. This makes the CFS2 a very important program that is used as a kind of ‘platform’ for the many air combat enthusiasts. An additional factor to it is that a number of users were able to create historically extremely correct missions and fly them in CFS2 so that, in a sense, the program becomes a history 'animator' or 'viewer'.
Although there has been previously a CFS1 and then a CFS3 version by MS, there have been serious changes between these versions where continuity was not always a given fact. On this ground many blogging site fans expressed the feeling that CFS2 is still unsurpassed and will so stay for at least a decade more.

[edit] CFS2 Main features

The program is offered in a set of 2 CDs and you have to keep one of them in the PC drive while running. That was a solution for those PCs who were not having yet a vast memory capability

[edit] CFS2 Wingmen capabilities

Although in the original Combat Flight Simulator users were accompanied in the air by AI Wingmen, they suffered from being poor shots, lack of commands e.g. Attack my Target, Engage the Enemy, and in some cases were not able to survive a lot of Battle Damage and collided with the player. In Combat Flight Simulator 2 however the whole Wingmen capability was expanded including: Ability to change positions of Wingmen in the player's section e.g. Ability to click and drag wingman from Second Flight Leader Position to Number Two position of Second Flight, Wingmen gained skill as the player progressed through the Campaign, however the AI Wingmen did not actively seek to engage the enemy and in most cases the player would have to direct them to engage the enemy. However Microsoft addressed this as being purposefully set, so that the player would have to carry out the bulk of the mission objectives. Wingmen also have full names e.g. Jason Fomichev, Frank Sutherland. In the original Combat Flight Simulator wingmen had one word names e.g. Old, Garth, Sutherland. Overall the wingmen capability in Combat Flight Simulator 2 is greatly improved from the previous version. However they still suffer from some very serious flaws the most notable being - following out-of control damaged enemy aircraft (such as those that lost a whole wing) and crashing with them (while attempting to deliver an unnecessary coup de grace) and totally disregarding the terrain when ordered to strafe ground targets (i.e. flying into mountains while approaching their strafing target). They still occasionally collide with each other (notably while circling above the carrier while waiting for the player to take-off) or when chasing enemy aircraft in pairs. All of this happens regardless of whether they are damaged or being under any kind of attack at all. Since the campaign fails if you lose more than ten wingmen and fail in a mission, this can lead to some serious frustrations, or the need to start some missions over and over again, even though you survived and carried out your mission, each time hoping that the wingmen won't ruin the game with their poor performance.

[edit] Themes and Scenery

The themes come from the Pacific War air fighting between 1941-44 but MS did very well to stick to the real stories of aces who fought on those days so that all scenarios for exercising and competing were designed after some real historic events and you are asked to take part in scenarios really flown by US Navy and Marine Aces. (Check the : http://www.microsoft.com/games/combatfs2/)
The scenery around which you may put your fighting experiences is coming from the same one that fit to the Pacific Islands in those days. You may add extra weather conditions selecting between clear sky, light or heavy cloud coverage and day or night conditions
The term scenery CFS2 also describes any special graphics that refer to additional components , weapons, special visual effects - like explosions and smoke - , or even particular instrument effects
A vast library of scenery features exist in CFS2 to create the battle environment. They can be static or animated. Most of the static ones are buildings, trees, bridges, aerodromes, harbors, barrage balloons, tents, barracks etc. The ones that may become moving objects are vehicles, tanks, destroyers, carriers, submarines and planes. All of them can become targets and most of them have a damage animation as well , eg : a ship is hit , you see explosions and flames and you will eventually see it sinking and disappearing below the waves. Tents , buildings and barracks are exploding , collapsing and then become rubbles and dust leaving holes on the ground.
Although not part of the scenery as such , the enemy planes appear in the sky with tags, containing their unit identity (if assigned one) and distance , in red characters. This is a very basic feature of CFS2 and has become a kind of part of the standard scenery. In the previous installment of the Combat Flight Simulator Series only the enemy aircraft's aircraft type and distance from the player were listed. However the Player's wingmen had tags with their 'name' and distance from the player. This does not differ much in Combat Flight Simulator 2 except that the Wingmen have 'proper' names.
Another new addition to Combat Flight Simulator 2 is that individual bullet holes appear where bullets have hit the plane, rather than pieces flying off the plane and random puffs of smoke and preset damage textures for specific parts of an object.

An F4F (set to be the Joe Foss plane) taking-off from Guadalcanal Henderson’s field, is trying to intercept the Japanese attackers coming from the north. The names of the Japanese units appear on the sky in red followed by their distance ( example : Aoshima 5719)

[edit] Types of aircraft performance

There are two category of planes you may select from : the flyable and the non-flyable ones. The first category comprises types you may pilot yourself in combat, the other types you may only use as escorts or enemies in a fighting scenario. The main flyable fighting types for the CFS2 are the F4F Wildcat, the Japanese Zero and the F6F Hellcat. These are by far the best performing types with an extreme resemblance to the real battle performance. They can act as fighters , bombers or rocket launching ground attack fighters and can be used in all Pacific War scenarios in the program. If missions are designed with accurate historical data they do produce almost the same results as with the actual air battles themselves! There are a number of historical dogfights in the Pacific that one may faithfully reproduce with CFS2.
This is not, however, the case with other types. Notably , the famous for their speed and power F4U-1 Corsair and P-38 Lighting are by far less performing than the others , whom they were supposed to exceed both in speed and power. Most of the other non-flyable types are behaving almost well. However, their effectiveness is greatly affected by position and altitude settings on a mission design ; for example most of the torpedo planes fail to hit ships if not set to attack at a very low level. Bombers are usually more effective but even so you have to assign ace skill for their pilots if you need to heavily damage the enemy. Some of the additional types available from amateur designers appear to have a number of additional problems. Occasionally upon creating huge wings of enemy planes in the skies, they may affect the screen-refresh rate , causing some update delay due to the many graphics details (‘frame-rate killers’)

[edit] Aircraft liveries - Textures or ‘skins’

For every model of CFS2 there are liveries or ‘skins’ associated with. They are typical 2D pictures of the bitmap (*. Bmp) type that cover the entire 3D model. The original ones are , however , very typical and standard , for example both F4F and F6F bear the standard navy blue-intermediate blue and below surface white color scheme, even when flown by US Marine Aces whose real color scheme was a simple grey-blue (above plane area) and light-grey (under wing area). No other particular characteristics exist for individual aircraft with different numbers or private badges. This ‘weakness’ however , has been totally overcome by the hundreds of amateur users who can redesign these liveries and offer an almost infinite variety of skins via the internet. A freeware program named DXTbmp.exe is able to convert these bitmaps into workable pictures that are edited with any popular image editor software and they are then converted back and saved to the original CFS2 place and format. The new liveries appear on the CFS2 models immediately upon running the program next time.
A skin modification with DXTbmp.exe where the number 86 and the victories as well as the name ‘Lulubelle’ have been added onto the original CFS2 skin , corresponding to the liveries of Major Greg Boyington, in 1943
Many tools for helping people to create add-ons can be found on the special Microsoft site for CFS2. Amateur fans may also advise the :http://www.mnwright.btinternet.co.uk/cfsutils.htm

[edit] Views and sounds

- A set of standard views are available exactly as with any other MS Flight Simulator and usually activated by the same action buttons . The enemy indicator from the original Combat Flight Simulator is carried on into Combat Flight Simulator 2, this allows Enemy planes to be traced in the sky with an ‘enemy indicator’ that shows where to look for them while next to all plane positions their name and distance in feet is displayed in red small characters to estimate their proximity and/or relative speed. A particular view can be selected for sea or ground targets alone, to navigate towards them.
The green-cone in front of the pilot is the ‘enemy-indicator’. This F4F just off Henderson’s field is warned that enemy planes arrive from left and above
The cockpit view becomes a major visual feature for any flight machine especially where instruments have to be looked at and read. The various instrument indicators , named ‘gauges’ , are collected in a special folder and when used with various models you may get the proper impression of the animated cockpit of a particular aircraft type. A special file is associated with every type that contains all the information of where a gauge will be put , how it will appear and how it will be animated
There are very satisfactory visual effects that follow the destruction of enemy planes or shipping , wave turbulence produced on the trail of ships , smoke and explosions combing visual and audio senses at the same time
Here you may observe the result from rocket attacks against a Japanese convoy . Watch the explosion on the bridge of this cargo ship ("Aki Maru') ahead and the rest of the convoy ship simulated , in a user's designed mission.
External views , top-down views and cockpit views can be selected at any moment , as with a typical Microsoft Flight Simulator. What seems to be missing , though , is the filming . Recordings of your flying is not available and you can not assess your tactics , especially on ground attacks.
- Normal engine sounds, bomb explosions and machine-gun rattling are very well simulated. There are as well pilot voice exclamations and expressions that suit the development of the battle , simulating radiotelephony messages during fighting. If the American nationality is selected for the pilot then these voice sounds are automatically activated. Their text is also displayed as a text message on the upper area of the screen for a while

[edit] Combat Scenarios from the original package

Once in CFS2 you may select your nationality and accordingly you may select from existing missions. In the original CFS2 disks you have US and Japanese missions for some real historic aces (like Foss, O’Hare, Boyington etc) . You may fly a mission whose complexity is pre-organized and described in the briefing text. As a beginner you may fly a simple training mission to perfect your shooting, bombing and rocket-launching techniques or select a simple one-to-one fight where you select the place, your plane and the opponent. You may select from campaigns , starting as an Ensign and there , according to the required tasks , if you succeed and survive, you may climb up the promotion ladder followed by citations. Campaigns are not easy to complete but for the dedicated player there is quite a hope at the end of the tunnel. Most experienced ones may end at least Captains with some 3-4 Congressional Medals. If you fail a mission you may simply ignore its results and retry or if favorable you then save them and continue on the next hoping to improve your career.

[edit] CFS2 Mission Builder

One of the most important components of CFS2 is the Mission Builder program included in the package by which users can create their own missions. The functions and tools are large in variety and there are many possibilities to enhance the action.
On the Mission Builder’s screen one may select any geographic area on earth as a center of air battle, not only the Pacific. Scenery objects may be added anywhere to create bases , airfields or target areas. Objects may be static , like buildings, bridges etc. , however, aircraft , ships and vehicles can be created also on the move over assigned tracks
For each mission the following data are inserted :
- a user file name, and optionally :
- time and date of air combat
- a briefing text and/or a background historical information
- a weather setup and other controlling parameters

These data are compiled automatically upon saving under a script given the file name + the .mis extension (filename.mis) and is saved in the \MISSIONS folder of CFS2
For combat objects (aircraft, planes, vehicles, guns…) the selection involves :
- nationality (which defines the attitude of the other objects. For example if an object is a plane of Japanese nationality it will fire at you if you are a USN pilot)
- name of group/unit and number of planes in it (8 planes is the limit for one unit/group but many other groups can be created. Pilot names in the same unit appear with numbers after the same unit name , ie : in the Aoshima group pilots appear as Aoshima (leader) , Aoshima-1, Aoshima-2 etc)
- position or tracks and waypoints to follow
- speed and altitude at waypoints
- operational task (strike, anti-ship, defend, intercept…) at waypoints
- ability of the pilot or ship captain (rookie, average, veteran , ace)
- payload ( arms carried . This option is variable according to the type )
- unit aggressiveness during battle

- group activation time and/or when to reappear
Triggering Events
On the purpose of creating some Events in the mission first the Triggering conditions have to be established. There is a variety of triggers that refer to number of kills , status of aircraft , object health (damage etc.) , position ( in – out of an area ) , time elapsed in mission and so on.
Events
Once the triggers have been defined then the Events are created to be activated after the predefined triggering conditions occur. For example you may congratulate a pilot for having scored 5 kills or announce to a pilot that his target was annihilated or that new enemy planes are approaching from a direction.

On editing these events one may combine a number of triggers that finally create a response as a result of this event. For example you may create a text to be displayed in front of a pilot to announce his 5 kills , and/or create a report that will appear at the end of the mission during the debriefing and/or a voice message. These voice messages must be voice files that are either existing in the program under the folder \SOUNDS or you created them by recording your own voice telling anything you want and saving this as a voice file in the folder \SOUNDS . An event can be also a restriction on a flight or maybe the mission termination itself. Many events can be created in one event and may also be sequenced in time. You may also assign an event as a task to be achieved which contributes to your final score and/or create a repetitive warning while it is still valid. Imagination only can be a limit, as everything depends on the user her/himself. The only point to pay attention to is that some events need special triggers and will not occur unless the triggers are successfully defined.

These data are compiled automatically upon saving under a scrip given the file name + the .dyn extension (filename.dyn) and is saved in the \MISSIONS folder of CFS2.
extra mission builder highlights
The experienced user may also edit the text of the *.mis and *.dyn files in order to achieve some other features not immediately controllable from the Mission Builder. One may assign:
- individual names to pilots in the same unit
- different aircraft types in the same group
- individual names to ship units other than the simple code numbers offered for , say , destroyers. Ie : one may rename the DD-245 as , say, USS Mahan
By editing some other files of the original CFS2 version one may :
- add more names for pilots and units to choose from in the mission builder
- more nationalities and allocation to sides as Allies or Axis

[edit] Add-ons

The myriads of CFS2 fans and the software knowledge and effort spent have produced miracles. At present CFS2 is used to simulate combats anywhere on earth and any aircraft type one may imagine. Europe itself , both during WW1 and 2 and even the Spanish Civil War air battles have become common place for a simulator initially made to be good only for the Pacific. Add-ons are even commercially produced and sold comprising new sceneries, types of aircraft, effects etc. Many more others are available free from various sites and even simply exchanged between fans, such as special skins and modified performance types. Their success is variable depending on the creators , at times the abilities of certain types are intentionally overstressed or others fail to perform according to the historical data. Yet , with the abundance encountered all over, few users only can be disappointed.
In the two above screenshots apart from the basic world scenery everything else is an add-on element. This mission is based historically on the first day of the Greek-Italian air war on 28.10.1940 over Ioannina NW Greece. The Greek Gladiator biplane, the shot down Italian Canti1007Z bomber , the damage effects, the Ioannina airfield and the mission scenario were all created by CFS2 fans
Yet there exist disadvantages. Add-ons present some difficulties for the average user :
- There is a complexity in file organization. There are folders that host the various components and one should be very familiar with where exactly every element should be placed. Usually any absence of a single element may render the particular aircraft or scenario unusable. Occasionally some designers offer an automatic installation facility but even then the user may find problems with missing parts or components’ incompatibility.
- Various downloaded types need a number of other co-operating add-ons to activate all the various effects and components. Some of them have to be downloaded from different sites. At times the files are not followed by any information of what other add-ons are necessary for a downloaded type to function
- Mission files especially need to be followed by all aircraft types and objects included in them , extra gauges, sceneries, effects etc. One component missing will end up in a ‘Data Base corrupted’ error message halting any further running.
- However, if one restricts her/himself to the types and effects existing in the original disks , any mission in the Pacific may run without a problem and add-ons are not really needed. One may find many free add-ons in the links http://www.simviation.com/, http://www.sim-outhouse.com/index.php and by reading this post http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1117604819/all
- A very active CFS 2 community is located at the Sim-Outhouse flight simulation web site. New aeroplanes, missions; campaigns, ships; vehicles, tanks; land class, buildings and airfields are constantly under construction and offered as free downloads to CFS 2 aficionados. You can met with and join in on an active forum here: Sim-Outhouse.com

Re: New Links and Webs dedicated for CFS2?
Reply #53 - Nov 30th, 2005 at 8:31am Bombadirs Guide on how to bacome a developer.

1.Bombardiers guide and tips on how to become a developer with CFS2.

Here it is:

Part One

Welcome to the CFS2 development world!

This post is very long so I've divided it into multiple posts

A friend posted in the Simviation Forums that a new member in Netwings needs help. So I came here and you want to get CFS2 modding eh?

Well, read on.....

I'm a member of the Wires Wings and Canvas design group and another design group (which currently is making the Nachtjäger! campaign, PM me if you want details ) and I create scenery, missions, DPs, campaigns and miscellaneous stuff for CFS2.

As for CFS2 modding and/or developing, look at all the stuff below....!

Good parts to get started in: DPs, mission building and scenery designing.

DPs are where the crash areas, guns, parts, weaponry etc are in aircraft. Other parts include adding an [EXTRA]. Extras are basicly a place to add a custom effect. In the extra you choose the location of it and which effect to show. You could maybe ask Corsair Freak about it, mark my words, after that VB Lancaster came he had done a lot of extras in his time Lol! Btw, they are mostly used in aircraft DPs for exhaust effects. A great DP editing program called DPEd can be found at http://www.simviation.com/cfs2utilities1.htm and can create and modify DPs and do a bit of experimenting and you'll see how you can get locations for [EXTRA]s. But remember, saving a DP in DPEd will erase any extras, so make a copy of the extra or extras from a DP somewhere else before saving the DP in DPEd. Btw, you don't have to have extras and you might be able to find an extra in the DPs of the ships Here is a tutorial for DP editing in Notepad: http://www.simviation.com/weapons.htm

Mission building, well if you installed CFS2 with Typical or Complete installation you get a Mission Builder with it. But to start you off with learning to use it, Cody Coyote's Mission Building tutorial is at http://www.simviation.com/cfs2misc2.htm.

Scenery creating can make areas look really good! You can place 3d objects (macros), make runways, add navigational aids and much more. Two good programs for scenery creating are available. Airport can be downloaded at http://www.airportforwindows.com/downloads.html or http://www.simviation.com/fsdesign_scenery1.htm. Flight Simulator Scenery Creator (FSSC) is great for CFS2 as well. You can get it at http://www.fssc.avsim.net/downloads.html or http://www.simviation.com/fsdesign_scenery1.htm

Part Two

Slightly more complicated stuff: Campaigns, repaints, air files.

A campaign is a bunch of missions and a .cmg file. The .cmg file contains code that strings the missions together into a campaign. To understand and write the code, you should get Cody Coyote's Campaign Tutorial. It's very good You can get it at http://www.simviation.com/cfs2utilities1.htm.

Repaints are basicly modified versions of the textures of an aircraft. In a part of the Simviation Forums you can ask people about where to get tutorials for repainting aircraft. That part of the Simviation Forums is at http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/y...cgi?board=repnt.

Air files have the suffix .air and contain the flight dynamics data, engine data, landing gear data, flaps data, avionics data and more. You can get a simple air file editor called AirEd at http://www.simviation.com/cfs2utilities1.htm.

Quite complex stuff : 3D visual models, carrier decks, buildings & macros and FX files.

3D visual models take lots of work and in my opinion are h-a-r-d . But if you want to give it a shot some aircraft creating stuff can be found at http://www.simviation.com/fsdesign_aircraft1.htm. G-Max models can be converted to CFS2 models with some utility, but I don't know where to get it . Btw, visual models are the shape of the plane that you see in the box that shows an interactive 3D veiw in the Select Aircraft box in CFS2. The paint job comes from files in the textures folder of the aircraft and the name of the files is dictated by the part in the model file that says what the bitmap filenames are and which part they're over yadda yadda yadda .

A carrier deck is the part of the ship.cfg file that states where all the points are in the deck so CFS2 mission builder will enable you to put a take off waypoint on the ship with the ship.cfg file that has the carrier deck section. I don't know how to make these and no tutorials are on the internet .

I think some people might use G-max or something to create models for destroyable CFS2 objects but for FS-type 3D objects (still can be used in CFS2 usually) you can use simpler things. DDay v1.0 can be used for CFS1 (and probably CFS2 because I think I've used something made with DDay 1 and it worked in CFS2 ) and it can be found at http://www.simviation.com/cfs1utilitites2.htm. There might be other utilities on the internet so just Google it!

Wow miamieagle. Quite a dossier. Some, actually, many of the links have caught my attention. I've been away from CFS2 for a while, but still have the discs along with Battle for Midway and Combat Aces. I'm going to have to take a look at this again.

Thanks,

Part Three

Effects (.FX) files eh? Well all I can do is change how long the effect goes before it dies but you might want to e-mail two of the most memorable CFS2 effects & mods designers. Giovanni "Nanni" Cignoni and Nibbio, two Italian fellows can be e-mailed at the following adresses: Nibbio's is jobim@tiscalinet.it and Nanni's is gcignoni@tiscalinet.it.

Martin Wright has made some great tools, a lot for CFS2!

What, no Battle of Britain II? You have to be kidding me! BOB2 has a terrific dynamic campaign. And I dont' see Janes WWII Fighters on your list either. Without those two, your collection is hardly complete.

I"am sorry but I do have BoB2 as well patched up to 2.10 and Janes World war two fighters. They are both terrific Sim but very limited in scope. I still need a mod CFS2 install to be be able to fly in areas of the World and in different eras in History that are not available in any other Sim Including IL46.

Re: New Links and Webs dedicated for CFS2?
Reply #66 - Mar 23rd, 2006 at 10:58am My tips on how improve European sceneries.

[url=10http://www.avsim.com/]10http://www.avsim.com/[/url]

This are General upgrades. There are more specific area upgrades that are also available for you pleasure.

Check out this Web dedicated for the improvement of European Scenery.

11.http://combatfs.homeip.net/cfs2coast/

I want to Thank this Website and the others like Netwings and Sim-ouhouse and all the Sceneries Developers and smaller Websites for Helping us enjoy this program with your talent. Without out your help this program would not have been the joy it is today.

PS my next post on this subject will be on the Pacific Theater.

On to the Pacific Theater.

Re: New Links and Webs dedicated for CFS2?
Reply #68 - Mar 23rd, 2006 at 11:02am I have decide to make a post placing most of the links I have with CFS2 planes.

Re: New Links and Webs dedicated to CFS2?
Reply #78 - Jun 15th, 2006 at 12:52pm I have found a way to take Screen Shots in CFS2. All you need is to install this program call FRAPS and basically you can strat taking pictures immediatley.

Here is how it works.

1.Down load FRAPS

2.I install it. It usually it install intself inside my Computer C. You can also pick the location where you it install. It will create its own Folder call FRAPS.

3. Go inside the Folder call FRAPS. CLICK on the Icon call FRAPS 99. Activate Start Fraps by Minimizing it or other option.

4. Start CFS2.

5.Start Free Flight or Quick combat.

6.Press F10 if you want a Screen Shot and or if you want a short 30 secound movie press F9.

7.Minimize CFS2.

8.Go back to FRAPS folder and click on either the Movie or Screen Shoots you have just made.
Its real easy.

The best thing about it that it will allow to take shots not only in CFS2 but also with most games you play in. Another thing is that there are no limitation to the number of Movies or Screen Shoots that you can make.

You can also use it as Gun camera or simply make a short movie of a mission you really like. Its your choice. You are the Movie Director.

Here is the Web where you can find FRAPS:http://www.fraps.com/

I hope enjoy this information

James007

PS I want to thank Bear for helping me figuring out this program.

Now I want to see your Screen Shots in this Forum

For your best camera shots, Go to virtual cockpit and press the right braket key on your key board. This will give you a close up view of the cockpit gun sight. Press F9 and that will activate Fraps or press what ever else your camera program needs to be activated with and this will give you a great camera shot view.

Do not be surprise to find out you need more practice on your shooting angles and on your aiming.

Its simply a lot of fun!

Copied your list (already have most of the items on it). Couldn't help but notice you left out the excellent 'hills' mod that girl made that adds elevations to the terrain. Is it included in one of the packages you list?

Great links for CFS2002. Especially like the 'hangers' addition. I have 1/2 dozen full cd's worth of simviation's aircraft and a 1 gb p3 that I am going to dedicate solely to EAW and CFS2002. your add on lists will certainly help me get the most out of the game.

Hi!
Could anyone please advise: are there any total conversions of CFS2 into European Theatre in a single download? Like including the terrain, aircraft, ground units, campaigns, etc.

CFS2 out of the box is still very strong. I do have the WW1 total conversion called "Combat Aces." I also have the Korean Air War conversion and (somewhere) the D-Day WWII in Europe conversion, if I can find it. But just the stock CFS2 is wonderful. I like it better than the stock CFS3.

My bad. I confused CFS2 with CFS3. The D-Day conversion was made for CFS3, not CFS2. I only have Korean Combat Pilot and Combat Aces (WWI) for CFS2. Oh yes, and the Pearl Harbor add-on. Back in the day, Pearl Harbor reduced one's PC to a slide show. Absolutely killed your frame rate on those older Pentium IIs and Pentium IIIs. But with newer PCs and more modern video cards, Pearl Harbor is a breeze.

You can still get the CFS2 addons here, at very reasonable proces, just search for CFS2. They are limited to a given theme eg Dambusters but what they do, they do quite well:

http://www.justflight.com/flightsimboxedaddons.asp

The D-Day addon for CFS THREE mentioned above was excellent, it made CFS3 closer than anything else to what it should have been from the start, but it won't install properly on my Vista PC. The CFS3 Mosquito Combat addon is also very good and works with my Vista install, as do the excellent Firepower and Memphis Belle addons (all are also available from Just Flight).

But the ultimate WW2 addon for CFS3 is now the ETO expansion, details here:

http://www.ww2aircraft.net/forum/cfs-i-ii-iii/cfs3-eto-expansion-17765.html

It involves very large downloads of each version (you can't just install the most recent one) but it is VERY worthwhile. The install procedure is rather fiddly but the latest instructions are extremely good and are easy to follow, and the result is a sim transformed WAY beyond any other CFS3 addon (except for some of the features of OFF - something with the combined features of OFF and ETO expansion would be perfect!). For anyone not much interested in the Eastern Front or who prefer CFS2's Pacific Theatre to the very limited one of Pacific Fighters, CFS3+ETO Expansion is surely the premier WW2 air combat simulator. It doesn't do the Battle of Britain as well as BoB1/BoB2 of course but for its great graphics and sheer scope, including a truly fantastic array of flyable planes, it is really not to be missed.

Didn't see D-Day for sale at Just Flight. It must be out of circulation, eh?

One thing I discovered is that a couple of the add-ons don't work perfectly together. I think D-Day conflicts somewhat with Firepower, if you have both installed at the same time. One of the "bugs" in that double install is a couple of Firepower planes stopped showing up in the selection list. I mean, you can have both installed simultaneously but there will be a couple of strange things. No show stoppers though.

Then again, it might be Memphis Belle and Firepower or D-Day and Memphis Belle. Dammit, I don't remember exactly which ones conflict. nope

Don't think I have had any conflicts with my CFS2 and CFS3 addons. Firepower and D-Day I think might not mix, so I had used separate installs for those when I had XP. Think the prob with D-Day now is something to do with the different place Vista puts CFS3's "User" files, the ones that don't go into the main Prog Files/MS games/CFS3 folder. There is probably a workaround and I would still love to be able to fly D-Day's RAF campaigns even with the excellent CFS3 ETO expansion but I have not cracked that yet.

Firepower's B17F conflicted with Memphis Belle's B17F but Just Flight released a patch to the latter which meant they could co-exist. I now have one install of CFS3+ ETO Expansion and one with Firepower + Memphis Belle + Mosquito Combat. My CFS2 install (stock at the moment apart from a few addon planes and campaigns) has Dambusters, Double Trouble (P51+FW190), Mosquito Combat, Combat Aces (WW1), Mig-v-Sabre, Vietnam Air War (planning to install Pearl Harbour again soon, too, also a Japanese-made payware Val campaign I got a while back).

33lima, I think you are correct. Firepower and D-Day did not mix well for CFS3. Tht's where I had my trouble. For CFS2, Combat Aces was fun. Korean Combat Pilot was okay. I still have all my add-ons but only Pearl Harbor is installed, at the moment.
