I looked through the archives but didn't see anything on it. Is there a version of Flaming Cliffs that does not have Starforce on it. I feel like I read that the naturalpoint version was Starforce free when it came out but I'm not sure. I finally have a machine that runs LOMAC well and thought I would give Flaming Cliffs a whirl.

"Don't worry" ???

I had big SF problems with SHIII, after a full week of troubleshooting with SF support they gave me a code that disabled the DVD check. Never figured out what caused it, but my sound card would lock solid during the DVD check, forcing a hard reboot to get my system working again. Now that being said, the support was very good.

So I'd take the advice with a grain of salt, some folks have no issues, others have had problems (me). The good news is SHIII can be run without SF now.

In principle, I oppose the concept of SF protection and won't purchase products with it.

Hola,

Just a heads up, I tried using the SF activation backup utility from my account download page at ED. It doesn't work, I had to burn an activation after fresh drives were installed in the same system I used before.

The only change was I used RAID 0 this time. So be carefull if your relying on that utility as a backup.

They've been notified.

Ok,

Here's the deal, it's not really a backup utility. It will only work on the original machine and install. Can't change hardware or the OS or you'll use an Activation.

In other words, useless.

No, the idea is it will work with the same hardware, but for a different OS install. If you need to reinstall Windows for some reason, but you don't change the hardware, the registration backup utility will preserve one of your activations if you use it properly.

Since the activation is based on your hardware profile, it makes sense that a hardware change causes you to require using a new activation. It is surprising that only a change to RAID 0 would cause this, but that's a different issue. The utility is not useless.

Joe,

SF support emailed me back and said it will not work on a new OS install. I thought it was for a reinstall of the OS aswell.

Here from SF support:

Hello,

Activation Store Utility doesn't work if you change hardware or reinstall
operation system. It was made for reinstallation of FC on the same hardware and
system.

I want to notice that we do not make a problem from the serial numbers. We sell
products, not the serial numbers.

The serial numbers is a method to control the distribution of the products. If
the purchase spread in a week through several countries - we can stop it.

When the limit of activations of your serial number will be reached, you should
contact us for getting a new serial number. We will consider your request and
give it to you.

Joe,

I think alot of people were confused, it was one of the reasons I stopped complaining about Activations and I think was misrepresented (which is why we're confused about it).

Was pretty steamed about it at first, got myself in trouble over at lockonfiles with a rant about it. Just wish I could find Lockon Gold in a discount bin someplace to cover myself.

Need to remember to take 24 hours before I respond to something when I'm pissed at a response.
