What year, what model plane? F4U-1? F4U-1A? F4U-1D?

VMF units were rotated; they had three tours, 6 weeks each, and then they were disbanded and the unit number re-cycled

There was also a fair amount of "borrowing" of planes. Some units, like VMF 214, didn't even "own" any

Try this one. It's not from any specific squadron; and is even fictionally marked. But it is the type of markings VMF 214 could have used around mid 1943. It's a trial for a skin pack I'm doing:

It's for the F4U-1, but it will work in any F4U folder

I have more classical three tone F4Us as well, just none for upload. Have you tried Flying Legends?

\:\) Well like I say, VMF 214 didn't really have any of it's own planes as we may commonly think of happening in 'standard' units - even when Boyington was the CO. They had "pool" aircraft. Take the plane Boyington is often associated with for example: "Lulubelle", Bu no. 18086, an F4U-1A. It wasn't really "his" plane, and he didn;t often fly it...VMF 214 didn't even have it's own mechanics for much of the time Boyington was there- they were Navy men. One actually tried to refuse to extinguish a VMF 214 plane that was on fire, he told Boyington "I ain;t responsible for no Marine plane". I imagine Boyington blacked his eye, but good, before he made the guy put out the fire

But I'm not sure that apart from photographic evidence you can pinpoint what planes were used by VMF 214 at any particular time. Are you sure that they had F4U-1Ds on land? Or do you mean the -1Ds they had on USS Franklin? If so, there is a skin for that in the sim already \:\) Check your skins

Anyway, that doesn't really matter. Any Corsair skin will 'fit' any 3D model we have for the Corsair in the sim. You can take that VMF 214 skin from the F4U-1D folder and put it on a corsair Mk 1 and it will work fine

if you are looking for the classic land-based Blacksheep planes, I don;t see any at M4T. Try browsing these:

http://www.flying-legends.net/php/downloads/listings.php?cat_id=488

R0NNC0 has some planes that VMF 214 flew, and at least one is there: "Marine's Dream" which was used at least once by VMF 214. Also included is a blank version with no number or nose art. I bet "Lulubelle" is there someplace too

Its been a while since I read it, but the book by Gamble on VMF 214 has some tail numbers in it... at least the ones that kills were recorded in...

http://www.sonic.net/~bstone/archives/980705.shtml

But you are absolutely correct in stating that 214's aircraft were not 'personalized' at all... they were plain, vanilla, as issued USMC F4U's.. and aircraft assigned to other USMC outfits were often flown by 214 pilots due to a shortage of aircraft... So I guess it would be pretty accurate to say that there is really no such thing as a VMF 214 skin that is any different than a standard USMC paint scheme... Unless you put the correct tail (Bureau) numbers on your skins..

The photographs you see of Lulu Belle were staged for the press corps and stateside public consumption
