EDIT: now running the correct version of Barcelona for anyone who likes to practice online. Please leave any feedback about the server / connection in this thread.

I've just installed rFactor on a machine I run 24/7, and set up a dedicated server.

It's on my home broadband connection so might not be too clever. Just an experiment really.

In the interests of mucking about with the tech (and me finding out how games are hosted) you might try connecting to a game called The Goon Show password bluebottle

It's running MMG 2007 SE and the default Barcelona track.

Not done this before, so any feedback / help would be great.

OVERSTEER - is when you hit the wall with the back wing.
HORSEPOWER - is how fast you hit the wall.
TORQUE - is how far you can take the wall with you.

Hey Goon.

I tried to get on, comes up ok in the server list, but after typing the password, all I got was 'server timed out' each time. Maybe you have to open some ports on the router to let others connect?

I probably do! I'll look in to it tonight.

Only really doing it out of interest, but if it's successful and useable I might leave it up to shadow the SimHQ server as a backup.

Well, I've got all the ports forwarded I can find in the guides to doing this, and have tried all sorts with Windows Firewall. I get the same error SpyDoc reports.

Server is running on Vista Ultimate 32bit.

Both machines are behind my router / modem, but from what I've read I should be able to connect via the internet list this way. If I give my client machine the internal IP of the server it connects fine.

I'll leave it up if anyone would like to test an external client again.

Had a look earlier, but couldn't find any server called "The goon show" or "goon show" listed.

OK, the test went well.

Sort of. \:\)

I did see the server. I did manage to see the initial selection screen.

I did not have the required modifications, and got booted.

Success! Moral victory! \:D

Later on, d/l'ed the MMG Server Edition, and got on "The Goon Show" for a few laps. Lost 5,000 credits for leaving the pits under red, then backing down the pit lane and getting DQ'ed for running the wrong way. Two wrongs don't make a right...

Moral victory indeed! Saw your name and the errors in the event viewer this morning. Thanks for testing and going to the trouble of downloading mods to do so (and thanks also to the other's who tested)

Any ideas as to how people might want the server set up and run? Whether to shadow the SimHQ or SmoothIsFast servers? Or put up a different mod entirely? I don't think I'm up to running or administering a race series yet.

Might be no use for it at all, but it's been an interesting exercise nevertheless.

Just gave it a quick try. Connected and ran OK.

The AI were having a lot of trouble though, and being mobile spinning hazards.

Stable connect here too tonight.

Working ok. I did have a weird graphical glitch that I hadn't had before, but I was on the laptop screen only, not my usual docking station crt.

I believe it was not due to the connection.

Good work Goon.
