There is another weird thing that EECH does that seems related to your problem. The colors in the rgb file bleed into the terrain colors but only at the same distances you describe. I don't know why that happens but my guess is it has something to do with some FOG DirectX function calls that EECH uses. It looks like the fog is applied according to distance and to the terrain only and not the sky. Maybe your system isn't handling these fog functions correctly. Does it do the exact same thing with a mod map and an original map? Does it do the exact same thing with the original EECH exe with the official Razorworks patch before you install the modded exec? You could search and post your problem on the SimHQ hardware forum. That may be where I saw a dual core problem. http://forums.guru3d.com/ has good forums with a lot of traffic for graphic troubleshooting. Do you have another old flight sim like Mig Alley or something that uses Dx7 that you could try? I can sympathize with you because a trouble like this would drive me nutz. First of all, thanks for continuing to help me trouble shoot this. It definitely seems to have something to do with fog. Terrain and objects don't show up unless very close from cockpit or external views. They do show up normally in the FLIR, which is weird and adds to the frustration! Now let me answer you questions... Mod map or original - I'm not sure which are which. If you let me know, I'll try... Yes the problem is the same with the razorworks patch only. (I guess that kind of answers the map question as well). Post on the hardware forum - one step ahead of you there: http://www.simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=2478749#Post2478749 Still wasn't able to fix it. I'll check out that other forum you linked to. Don't have any other DX7 games... I think. Maybe I can find a demo to download for free and try... *found one. I'll try it* Is there a way to turn off or disable fog? Maybe that could fix it... Mig Alley demo won't even load on this laptop. So much for that...

In ...\Razorworks\common\maps\ there are mapxx directories. map1 through map6 are the original maps. Inside the mapxx directories there are camp01 directories and the files in there are named corresponding to the campaign name (ex: map1 = Thailand). map7 and above are the mod maps. I was wondering if the mod maps give you a solid white for the screw up and maybe with an original green colored map like Taiwan or Lebanon you might see a green color that is obliterating the terrain. If the terrain shows in the FLIR then can you see the terrain when you hit the N key for night vision? Mig Alley demo won't even load on this laptop. So much for that... Hold on partner. Good idea with the free demo. If it doesn't load, that could be a bad sign right there. For a quick reality check, does that same Mig Alley demo load on your good laptop? I don't know off hand about disabling fog. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a way but you may have to jump through some hoops to do it.

I'll try the demo on my old laptop, and check the different maps like you suggested. *Also, I added a pic of the issue to the first post of the thread.

Does anyone know what this line does?
eofullrange=0 # eo ranges near to max fog distance (and objects are drawn up to it) 1=yes 0=no

Malibu43,
Now that I've seen the pic you posted I don't really think my fog theory is a very good theory. The super sharp cutoff is not what I imagined. I don't see any clouds and the ground looks a little plain too, like maybe you're only seeing color and not the texture. Mipmapping is related to distance but that doesn't seem a likely culprit either. If you set goto=1 and start free flight you can click around on the campaign map and teleport there. Collisions don't hurt you so if you clicked into a major city until you were right up against a building I wonder if you would see it. The helicopter doesn't even have to be flying.
I'm curious what happened with the mig alley demo on your other laptop.

I'm curious what happened with the mig alley demo on your other laptop. On my other laptop, the mig alley demo loaded, but there seemed to be some resolution issues. One small portion of the the title screen was really maginified and filled the entire monitor. I wasn't able to click on anything, so I ctrl-alt-deleted out of it. I gave up on it after that. The Gunship! demo, which I believe is a DX7 game, runs fine on every laptop I have (even work), so that kind of rules out the DX7 thing. Regarding being able to see objects when they're closer, I can see them when they are within the "magic viewable radius" of the players point of view. I confirmed this by hitting autopilot, and whatched a power line tower approach through the FLIR, once it was really close I looked out the window, and saw very top of it appear through the "fog" and then dissapear again. Also, if I start close enough to another chopper or ground object, I can see it. I also jumped around to other ground units through the external view, and witnessed the same issue with them as well.

Maybe it is the fog then. I wouldn't have guessed it would have an effect at that close of a distance. I've run out of ideas to try even just for the hell of it. I guess it's possible that laptop is broken, as in, a different unit of the same model might work but probably the manufacturer would say they don't support anything that old. Good luck. I hope you post back if you ever figure it out.

I hope you post back if you ever figure it out. I can't believe I didn't remember this until now, but when I first got my Macbook, I downloaded the Mac demo of EECH, and it wouldn't run at all. I emailed support, and they said that there were issues with some of they're older games and the new GMA x3100 graphics chips. This was confirmed when someone else with the same Macbook, but an older GMA graphics chip, was able to run the demo fine. I kind of forgot about all that, and when I put XP on my Macbook and started trying to install EECH, I didn't consider what I had learned earlier. I guess in the back of my mind, I was thinking it was a completely different laptop and different game. So anyway, I think there is just a compatibility issue with EECH and the GMA x3100, and there is nothing wrong with anything, they just don't work together. I was able to download and play the Gunship! demo just fine, so I've ordered that game. Pretty different from EECH, but I think some of the stuff I learned in EECH will help me out in gunship. IMHO, I think gunship does some things better, actually.

Just to add something, if anyone is ever looking at this down the road...
I got my hands on a copy off EECH2 (didn't pay for it thankfully), and that also does not run on my laptop with the GMA x3100. Ran fine on my laptop at work. It makes sense that it doesn't work, though, since it's basically the same game with the same engine.
So if anyone out there has a laptop with an Intel GMA x3100 (965 chipset familiy) and you're looking to buy/play EECH or EECH2, DON'T DO IT! The games won't work with that graphics chip.
