Searched a little bit on the subject but did not really find what i need to know.

My mate is installing 1946 for the first time ,he just got a brand new machine 8600 card dual core job.Now...should he kill the annoying as hell UAC pop up bullcrap ,install it to a different folder like c:GAMES or just do the normal install.

I will be going over on the weekend to put joytokey on ,the nocd and the 4.08 patch, but i won't be there when he installs it tonight so any hints if you could post here i will print off for him \:\)

See my Updating the DVD sticky thread. It has information about installing IL-2 1946 and various supporting utilities to Vista.

To cut to the chase though, don't let it install into the "Program Files" folder on your C:/ . Delete the words "Program File" and one of the slashes from the DVD's default install path when that box comes up after the Install Shield.

ok,spoke too soon, not working or rather after after he has created a new folder D:\ GAMES\pacfighters..browses to that starts the install, gets to language/english then nothing happens, disc spins but nada.

He has tried a few times so ihave said run a ccleaner, registry clean, turn off the painful Vista security service and reboot then try again, any ideas?

It is likely that when he tries to make changes in setup (specifically any changes to conf.ini, screen resolution and perfect water etc etc), and other such "writing functions" such as Pilot Career creation/updating requiring re-writing of the campaigns.ini and settings.ini files in the USERS folders, he will have problems.

Had I seen this thread earlier, I would have emphatically advised that 1946 be installed to a New/Different folder than C:\Program Files. I install all games to C:\MyGames and they work perfectly.

Hi Aussie , it must work on vista because I made installation on my new laptop with Vista home premium ( Lenovo 3000N with core 2 duo proc ( 1.73 ghz ) 2 gigs of ram and GeForce video card with 256 mb ram . I prepared myself before by reading every available info on this forum and some other forums, but still spend few days to tweak conf.ini to get pretty good results. It is pitty that Open GL is not well supported so I switch to DirectX under which game runs good practically without sttuters ( pretty packed with planes ). Have been on Nvidia page for new drivers but there are only some for desktop comps and must wait for upgrade for Nvidia Go cards. Now machine runs on drivers for graphic card supplied by Vista. All in all it works with Vista but do as adviced by guys in forums ( switch off UAC, make new map and direct instal there, make some tweaking and voila !). Currently I have installed - IL2 1946, Call of duty + UO, and one old Helo sim - Gunship!,planning to try Call of duty 2.

Best wishes for succesfull install - DOC 99bottles

He did his install all good, and running in opengl with the perfect water.

Another guy here at work has had 1946 sitting near his pc for a good month now ,new joystick and has not been able to install on vista. He ended up getting it installed by exploring the disk and clicking on an icon that just says A.He said the autorun.exe would not work and it would not auto install no matter where he tried to put it.I'm guessing the A icon on the disc must have been a type of autorun anyway?

I have mine installed on Vista Ultimate in D:\Program Files\Ubisoft\IL-2...... works absolutely fine. And AJay's comments about the 'A' file are correct - the standard DVD installation will not work - in order to start a clean install you must manually launch the 'A' file by clicking on it.
