23 February 2008
Time for a quick update:
Good news folks, we got a new build this past week. Items of interest included in this build:
- Conversion to DX9 is now complete and full shadows and Z-fighting issues have been fixed.
- Created new producer's note (Basic Flight) and will be posted when team has time to add to main DCS site.
- We are now running the front end and the simulation separately rather than sharing RAM. This will help the efficiency of the engine.
- Multiplayer is a big focus now regarding implementing functionality and testing.
- More than 100 new tweaks and fixes to the Mission Editor. While this is ongoing, mission/campaign creation is in full swing.
- Continued improvements to ground units to include reworked auto-cannons, artillery area bombardment definition to also include calculations for ricochets and armor penetration, and new units have more detailed armor values according to shape.
- SA-10C and SA-15 have more realistic engagement sectors.
- Aircraft AI has had improvements to target prioritization.
- Wingman AI has had many improvements regards to flight lead orders.
- FM tweaks and system improvements to the Ka-50.
- Inertial Navigation Unit now implemented with either fly-over or Shkval lock methods. In the ME, you can set fixed INU update points.
- Fixes to the trigger system.
On another topic, since my last update, I've had several kind-hearted French speaking souls volunteer to help out with the DCS:BS French manual. So, we now hope to provide such a manual.
Thanks, Matt

Why not jump from Dx8 to 10? Because DX10 is Vista-only and should be resisted for as long as possible. Most of us dont have and dont want Vista, as a games platform it has few benefits and many disadvantages. DX10 has some claimed graphical benefits but comparative tests of actual delivered products dont yet substantiate those claims. Cheers, Keith

Dx 10 in Black Shark would be product line suicide, IMO.

Wow, conversion to dx9 is just NOW complete? DX9 was released in 2002, what exactly have they been doing on this game all this time to just NOW get around to dx9 for god's sake. DX9 is 5 years old, it's not like it's new technology, were they seriously developing this around dx8?
This game has been in development now for so long, i'm not sure i care anymore. Nice flamebait... Please do us all a favour and think about your FPS in a possible Dx10 terrain engine, 20 km visibility range plus your vidcard...

@ swampthing To be honest DX10 is in its infancy and will have a few changes to come to it yet.
To complain about dx 9 being five years old is a bit of a fanatical and closed minded attitude. Firstly do yourself a favour and see how old the last version of DX9 is.
Secondly just about all hardware and most programmers are fully conversant with the abilities of dx-9 instead of future programming for unkowns with dx-10

Why are you guys talking about DX10 and Vista? It seems more like you are trying too impress us with how many blogs you have read not comment on the actual subject. It seems too me this awsome game is unfortunatly far from completion and we will all be waiting possibly more than a year more for it. Its a sad sad day If you read the devolpment posts that are very frequent and informative, you will know that your post is fairly inaccurate. The last hint we received (IIRC) stated that BS is still planning for a 2008 release. Going by the fact they are tweaking the mission building system, creating the campaign and looking at translating the manual into (again IIRC) french, that that estimate could be true.

The expected release date was a year or so ago...but they took a lot of time off to do another project...right now no one(not even the devs probably) knows when it will be released.
